Tooth bleaching has become a routine way of treating tooth staining. It is necessary to teach tooth bleaching in undergraduate education of Stomatology. The possibility of teaching bleaching was explored in our school and the teaching effects were assessed by questionnaires to undergraduate students of Stomatology in 2005 and 2006 degree after class. The outcomes indicated that a teaching mode of “3+3+2” made a positive effect on the teaching of tooth bleaching, combining with multimedia teaching,problem-based learning and bilingual teaching. The present article summed up the experience of teaching tooth whitening in undergraduate education of Stomatology and gave some advice for improving the quality of teaching.

Objective Atherosclerosis ( AS) is a common pathological basis of cardiovascular diseases.Adiponec-tin ( APN) has been shown to have an anti-AS effect, and the underlying mechanisms, however, are largely unknown.Nu-clear transcription factorκB ( NF-κB) has also been regarded as a proatherogenic factor, mainly because of its regulation of a variety of the proinflammatory genes linked to AS.It is hypothesized that the inhibitory effects of APN on AS is through the inhibition of NF-κB signaling pathway. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis via investigation and validation of the inhibitory effect of APN on AS in ApoE-/-mice, and to delineate the roles of NF-κB signaling pathway in modulating the APN effect on AS in vivo. Methods APN overexpression in ApoE-/-mice were mediated by transfecting adenovirus bearing a vector encoding for APN and enhanced green fluorescent protein ( Ad-APN-eGFP) .The AS in ApoE-/-mice was induced by feeding a high-fat diet.To validate the inhibitory effect of the adenovirus mediated APN overexpression on AS in the ApoE-/-mice.120 male ApoE-/-mice aged 12 weeks were randomly and evenly assigned into two groups (60 mice per group), and were fed with a high-fat diet to induce AS.At 0 day, 2, 4, and 6 weeks of high-fat diet feeding. The 2 groups of mice were injected intravenously in the tail with either 100 μL (3.0 ×108 p.f.u) of Ad-eGFP virus ( control group) or the same amount of Ad-APN-eGFP virus ( APN group) .Blood samples and aortic tissues were taken at 0 day, 4, and 8 weeks of high-fat diet feeding. For the blood samples, FABA was used to analyze the concentrations of blood lipids and ELIZA was used to test the concentrations of serum APN.For the aortic tissues, oil red O staining was used to detect the surface lesion percentage.Masson staining was used to evaluate the collagen content and fibrous cap thickness of the plaque area.Immunofluorescence method was used to detect APN and NF-κB p65 expression.Western blot was used to de-tect the expressions of APN,nuclear NF-κB p65 and the downstream factors of NF-κB pathway. Results APN inhibited the formation of atherosclerotic plaque in ApoE-/-mice.The lesion formation in aortic sinus was significantly inhibited ( P<0.01).Compared with the control group, the oil red O staining showed that the surface area ratio of atherosclerotic le-sions was decreased significantly in the Ad-APN group ( P<0.001 ): the percentage of surface lesions in the 4 weeks groups was 27.78 ±8.64 vs.33.02 ±5.18 (%);the 8 weeks groups was 31.58 ±5.87 vs.52.16 ±5.79 (%) .As the serum APN was increased, the concentration of TC, TG and LDL-C were significantly decreased( P<0.001 for all) , and the growth of body weight was slowed down(P<0.05).APN effectively inhibited the expression of NF-κB nuclear protein p65 and inflammatory factors. Conclusions Adiponectin reduces the inflammatory reactions in atherosclerosis through in-hibiting the NF-κB pathway.

Objects To study the protective effects of cimetidine against oxidative stress in rats induced by cumulative low-dose irradiation. Methods Sixty SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (10 each):normal control group, model control group, lentinan group [89mg/(kg.d)] and 3 dose groups of cimetidine. After oral administration, all the rats were exposed to γ-ray irradiation 8 hours/day for 12 days, and sacrificed on the 13th day.The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD),glutathione peroxidase (GPx),catalase (CAT) and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum, liver, thymus and spleen were determined.By using the superoxide anion radical system, hydroxyl radical system,H2O2 radical system, oxidation system of linoleic acid induced by alkane radical system and diphenyl picryl hydrazinyl radical (DPPH) radical system, the antioxidation activities of cimetidine were detected. Results The activities of SOD in liver and thymus decreased significantly, the GPx activity in serum, liver and spleen decreased significantly and MDA level in serum, liver and spleen increased significantly after 0.3Gy cumulative ionizing radiation.Cimetidine enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes in serum and organs, and reduced the MDA level. In a certain concentration range, cimetidine had different scavenging effects onto these radical systems, and showed good performance in hydroxyl radical. Conclusion Cimetidine can effectively ameliorate the oxidative stress from low-dose cumulative irradiation by scavenging free radicals, increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes and reduce the content of lipid peroxidation products, thus presents a potential radio protective effect.

Objective To evaluate collateral flows using vessel encoded arterial spin labeling (VE-ASL) perfusion imaging. MethodsVE-ASL was achieved to assess the presence and function of collateral flow on patients with internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis. The presence of the anterior and posterior collateral flow was demonstrated by flow patterns of the A1 segment and posterior communicating artery (PCoA).Distal function of collateral flow of stenotic hemisphere was categorized as adequate ( cerebral blood flow ≥10 ml · min-1·100 g-1 ) or deficient (cerebral blood flow < 10 ml · min-1· 100 g-1 ). The results were compared with magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and intraarterial digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in crosstable by using Kappa values. The VE-ASL before and after ICA stent therapy were compared. ResultsThe Kappa values of the flow patterns of AI segment and PCoA between VE-ASL and MRA were 0. 746 and 0. 700. The Kappa value of the function of collaterals using VE-ASL and DSA was914. VE-ASL showed collateral flow via leptomeningeal anastomoses. VE-ASL changed significantly after ICA steat therapy. ConclusionVE-ASL reveals the presence and distal function of collateral flow, which helps to evaluate the efficacy of ICA steat therapy.

The pure titanium disks were divided into three groups and etched for 30 minutes with HNO3, hot H2SO4/H2O2 or hot H2SO4/HCl respectively. The treated disks were studied and analyzed with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The disks etched with HNO3 had a smooth surface, while those etched with hot H2SO4/H2O2 or hot H2SO4/HCl had rough surfaces, and the surface etched with hot H2SO4/HCl had larger micropores. The XPS analysis demonstrated that the main elements of the surface in three groups were titanium, oxygen and carbon. The carbon concentration was the lowest on the surface etched with hot H2SO4/H2O2 and the highest on that etched with hot H2SO4/HCl. The substances were TiO2, Ti2O3, TiO and metal Ti on the surface etched with HNO3 or hot H2SO4/H2O2. Only TiO2 was detected on the surface etched with hot H2SO4/HCl.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2002;19(3):374-377
All samples were divided into three groups and subjected to three different surface treatments, i.e. untreated group, group etched with mixed acid of 1:1 HCl and H2SO4 followed by immersion in 6N NaOH solution at 60 degrees C for 24 h and group etched with mixed acid of 1:1 HCl and H2SO4 followed by immersion in 6N NaOH solution at 60 degrees C for 24 h then heated at 600 degrees C for 1 h. After soaked in simulated body fluid for two weeks, a thin calcium phosphate coatings was precipitated on the surfaces of the two treated samples. Results of SEM and EDX showed that calcium phosphate coatings on the surfaces of the titanium samples etched and heated were more even than the titanium samples etched without heating. The analysis of XRD demonstrated the main component of calcium phosphate coating was hydroxyapatite.
