AIM: To investigate the short-term efficacy and safety of sulfasalazine (SASP) 3 g per day in the treatment of patients with mild and moderate ulcerative colitis (UC). METHODS: 122 patients were treated with SASP ( 1 g, t.i.d.) for 6 weeks. The data of clinical manifestations, colonoscopic and histological involvements were compared before and after the treatment of UC. The short-period efficacy and adverse reactions were evaluated in 110 patients. RESULTS: The therapeutic project was carried out in the 110 out of 122 patients. After 110 patients were treated for 6 weeks, the clinical, colonoscopic and histological remission were 71.8%, 21.8% and 16.4%, respectively. Among the 79 patients with clinical remission, 58.2% and 67.1% of them remained grade 1 in colonoscopic and histological findings, respectively. The curative rates and the effective rates were 63.9% and 82.0%, respectively. Among the 122 patients treated with SASP, 21 of them ( 17.2%) had adverse reactions. Except 4 patients suffered urticaria and leukopenia, no patients quitted the treatment because of obvious adverse reaction. CONCLUSION: SASP ( 3 g per day) can be an effective and safe medicine in treatment of patients with mild and moderate UC, but more than half of the patients in clinical remission still have light inflammation in colonoscopy and histology.

Objective To assess the clinical value of 131I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy in pheochromocytoma. Methods A total of 430 patients with clinically suspected pheochromocytoma underwent 131I-MIBG whole body scintigraphy, 326 among them underwent B-ultrasound, 400 for CT and 77 for MR examination respectively. While 178 among them were diagnosed with pathology and the others were diagnosed clinically. Results Of all the patients, 108 were diagnosed pheochromocytoma, including 89 131I-MIBG scan positive and 19 negative. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of 131I-MIBG were 82.41%, 100% and 95.70%, respectively. 131I-MIBG scan detected 90.00% of unilateral adrenal, 45.45% of bilateral adrenal, 85.71% of ectopic and 66.67% of malignant lesions, respectively. The proportion of patients with positive 131I-MIBG scan increased from 20.69% in all patients to 35.15% in patients with clinical symptoms and positive conventional imaging (at least one of B-ultrasonography, CT or MR was positive) and 64.58% in those with clinical symptoms, positive conventional imaging, and elevated 24 h urinary catacholamines. In 59 patients with adrenal incidentaloma, 8 were scan-positive and all had confirmed pheochromocytoma, while 2 of scan-negative patients also had confirmed pheochromocytoma. Conclusion 131I-MIBG scintigraphy is the first choice for the diagnosis of both adrenal and extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma. However, it is inappropriate to take this method as the initial screening approach.

Objective To evaluate the toxicity and efficacy of post-operative chemoradiotherapy for gastric cancer. Methods Forty-five gastric cancer patients treated with post-operative radiation ± concurrent chemotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 14 were female and 31 were male. The median age was 54 (30-72) years. Pathology stages were IB-IV. Radiotherapy of doses from 45 Gy/25fx to 55 Gy/30fx was delivered to the tumor bed and regional lymph nodes with 3D conformal or IMRT technology.Concurrent chemotherapy agent was fluorouracil or capacitabine. Results All patients except 2 (4%)completed radiotherapy as planned. The most common acute toxicities were hematologic and gastrointestinal effects. The incidence of the patients was 56% with mild nausea/vomiting,71% and 7% with grade Ⅰ / Ⅱ and Ⅲ leucopenia, and 38% with grade Ⅰ/Ⅱ hypodynamia and anepithymia. The 1-year overall survival,relapse-free survival and local control rates were 87% ,82% and 95%, respectively. Conclusions Postoperative chemoradiation for patients with locally advanced gastric cancer is tolerable. Our study shows the advantage of post-operative chemoradiation for local control. However, further prospective randomized trial is needed to validate the efficacy.

Objective To detect the expressions of Lingo-1 and myelin associated protein in the white matter and hippocampus of ovariectomized rats after short-term estrogen replacement therapy in order to explore the possible mechanisms for the effects of estrogen on the brain myelin sheaths and cognitive function. Methods 24 middleaged (9-12 months) female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were bilaterally ovariectomized (OVX) and randomly divided into vehicle replacement (OVX+Veh) group and estrogen replacement (OVX+E) group. After one month ERT,The spatial learning and memory ability of all rats were assessed with Morris water maze.Then,10 rats were randomly selected from each group. The ultrastucture of myelin sheaths in the cerebral white matter and hippocampus were observed, and the protein expression of MBP and Lingo-1 were investigated with Western blot and immunohistochemical staining. Results The escape latencies of OVX+E rats in navigation test were significantly shorter than that of OVX+Veh rats(P<0.05).The myelin sheaths in the white matter and hippocampus of OVX+Veh rats showed obviously degeneration. In the OVX+E group, the expression of MBP in the white matter and hippocampus was significantly higher than that of OVX+Veh group(P<0.05),however,the expression of Lingo-1 was significantly lower than that of OVX +Veh group (P< 0.05).Conclusions One-month ERT has significant beneficial effects on the spatial learning capacity and myelin sheaths in the white matter and hippocampus. The protective effects may be related to estrogen-induced downregulation of the Lingo-1 expression in the white matter and hippocampus of rats.
