Objective To assess the diagnostic value of Logistic model in differentiating between malignant and benign ovarian lesions. Methods Thirty-five indexes of clinical and ultrasound data were recorded in 601 ovarian lesions confirmed by surgical pathology. The Logistic model was developed on a training set( n - 400) and tested on a test set( n = 201). Results Variable selection resulted in a set of 10 variables for the models: personal history of ovarian cancer, maximal diameter of the lesion, maximal diameter of the solid component, multilocular-solid tumor, solid tumor, ascites, flow within papillation, irregular walls, very strong intratumoral blood flow (i. e. color score 4) and acoustic shadows. Test set area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve was 0.963 with a sensitivity 93.9% and a specificity 93. 1 %. Conclusions Logistic model can accurately separate malignant from benign ovarian masses.

BACKGROUND: In many studies, rats were commonly used as models of retrorsine-induced hepatic injury. Some reports have confirmed that retrorsine cannot inhibit proliferation of mouse hepatic cells. Other reports have shown that retrorsine has inhibitory effects on proliferation of mouse hepatic cells. OBJECTIVE: To study the liver regeneration after hepatic injury by creating mouse models treated with partial hepatectomy combination with retrorsine. METHODS: A total of 40 C57BL/6J mice were equally and randomly assigned to 2 groups. In the partial hepatectomy combined with retrorsine group, intraperitoneal injection of retrorsine 70 mg/kg was conducted, twice, within an interval of 2 weeks. Four weeks later, 2/3 hepatectomy was performed. In the partial hepatectomy group, intraperitoneal injection of saline 70 mg/kg was performed, twice, with an interval of 2 weeks. Four weeks later, 2/3 hepatectomy was performed. At 14 days after partial hepatectomy, the restoration of the livers was observed. The liver cell injury was observed at 3, 7 days with hematoxylin-eosin staining. The hepatocyte proliferation was observed at 3 days with BrdU staining. Oval cell proliferation was observed at 3, 7and 14 days with CK19 and C-kit antibody immunohistochemistry.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: In the partial hepatectomy group, the damaged liver nearly restored to normal at 14 days after partial hepatectomy, and the result was contrary to partial hepatectomy combined with retrorsine group. Hematoxylin-eosin staining demonstrated that significant degeneration changes in hepatic cells in the partial hepatectomy combined with retrorsine group. BrdU staining showed that hepatocyte proliferation at day 3 was significantly determined in the partial hepatectomy group, but few in the partial hepatectomy combined with retrorsine group. CK19 and C-kit immunohistochemistry demonstrated that visible oval cell proliferation was seen in mice of partial hepatectomy combined with retrorsine group. First of all, hepatic oval cells appeared in portal area and differentiated into hepatic cells and bile duct cells, and then grew into the hepatic lobule gradually. These indicated that retrorsine can obviously inhibit hepatocyte regeneration after liver injury in mice. The model of mice treated with retrorsine and partial hepatectomy could induce oval cell proliferation.

Objective To study the impact of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection on the activity of cord hematopoietic stem cells. Methods CD34+ cells were isolated from healthy human cord blood by miniMACS. Cells were cultured in IMDM complete culture medium containing stem cell factor (SCF),fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 ligand (FL), thrombopoietin (TPO), interleukin-3 (IL-3) and 10% fetal bovine serum. High copies HBV were added to the culture system. The proliferation of stem ceils and virus replication were observed. Following the proliferation, dendritic cells (DCs) were induced by adding granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and IL-4. Morphous of stem cells and DCs were observed by microscope and the cell surface molecules were detected. Results The proliferation of stem cells infected with HBV was significantly lower than that of healthy stem cells (P<0.01),and enhanced after adding cytokines (P<0.01). At the same time, HBV replication was increased after adding cytokines in the culture system (P<0.01), but the proliferation was still lower than that of healthy stem cells with cytokines in the culture medium (P<0.05). Dane particles were found in the cytoplasma of stem cells infected with HBV by electron microscope. The expression of CD80,CD86 ,CD1a and HLA-DR on DCs derived from HBV infected stem cells were all lower than those on DCs from non-infected stem cells (P<0.01). Conclusions HBV could infect CD34+ stem cell and the proliferation of the stem cell could enhance the virus replication. HBV could not only inhibit the proliferation of stem cells, but also down-regulate the immuno-phenotype expression of DCs derived from CD34+stem cells.

In this paper, the method of power spectral estimation is used to analyze the heart rate variability (HRV) signals for 15 heroin addicts and 15 healthy persons. The analysis result shows that there is a significant difference of the locations of the high-frequency peaks between the power spectra of heroin addicts' HRV signals. It means that the locations for heroin addicts lie in 0.437 +/- 0.064 Hz and the locations for healthy persons lie in 0.325 +/- 0.052 Hz.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2006;23(5):986-990
Using wavelet transforms method, time-frequency characteristics of pulse signals from 15 heroin addicts and 15 healthy persons were analyzed. According to 3-D and contour plots used to display discrete dyadic wavelet transforms, the significant difference of time-frequency characteristics between the signals of heroin addicts and healthy persons were revealed. A primary criterion was also obtained, with the criterion, 15 heroin addicts were entirely identified, while two healthy subjects were misidentified. The research result shows that the wavelet-based multiresolution analysis is a very effective method to extract characteristics of pulse signals. It is valuable to the diagnosis and therapy for heroin addicts.

Objective To evaluate the current status of intestinal nematode infection in Shanghai and make recommendations for further control activities Methods Retrospective review of the control program was made based on the change of nematode prevalence in Shanghai area since the 1950s, and challenges under the current situation were analysed. Results The intervention measures included chemotherapy, health education, sanitary disposal of human excreta and safe water supply. With the control strategy, socio\|economical development and the change of farming patterns, the prevalence of intestinal nematode infection in population was reduced by 88\^5%, from 62\^6% in 1955 to 8\^2% in 2000. Among them, ascaris infection decreased by 89\^0%, from 52\^1% to 6\^3%, hookworm infection decreased by 99\^0%, from 12\^9% to 0\^1%, but pinworm infection was still as high as 18\^9% in 1999. Conclusion Prevalence of nematode infection in Shanghai was considerably reduced. To match it with the current socio\|economical development in the Municipality, however, more needs to be done. Sustainable control activities and surveillance are recommended.
