AIM: To investigate the possible role of endothelin(ET-1) in asthma pathogenesis and the effect of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) on changes of ET-1. METHODS: Measuring the contents of endothelin-1(ET-1),atrial natriuretic factor(ANF),cGMP in plasma and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of guinea pigs. RESULTS: The contents of ET-1, ANF and cGMP in asthma group were higher than that of the control group; There was a significant negative correlation between ET-1 and ANF( r=-0.638,P

Objective To evaluate the correlation of visual acuity measured using two different types of eye chart in children with amblyopia. Methods 119 cases (213 eyes) amblyopia patients were selected, including 40 cases (80 eyes) of refractive amblyopia,41 cases (58 eyes) of anisometropia amblyopia, and 38 cases (75 eyes) of strabismus amblyopia were selected.Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were determined using standard visual chart and visual noise dual chart and the correlation between the two visual acuity result were explored using Spearman's correlation analysis. Results The visual acuity in refractive amblyopia, anisometropia amblyopia and strabismus amblyopia determined by standard visual chart was statistically correlated with that determined by visual noise dual visual acuity chart. Conclusions The visual acuity measured by standard vision chart showed satisfactory linear relationship with that measured by visual acuity chart double among three types of amblyopia, however, the strength of correlation coefficient between different types of amblyopia were different:correlation coefficient in anisometropic amblyopia was the highest, and the coefficient in refractive amblyopia was the lowest.

Objective To investigate the effects of astragalus polysaccharides(APS)on the metabolism of collagen in hamsters with diabetes mellitus(DM) and explore the possible mechanism of APS on diabetic cardiomyopathy. Methods The levels of insulin,C-peptide,myocardial enzymes, glycosylated serum protein(GSP),plasma and myocardial angiotensin(AngⅡ) were tested in APS group(n=15) and DM control group(n=15).Immunohistochemistry was used to measure the expression levels of typeⅠand typeⅢ collagen, activities of matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs) were examined by using zymography, and TNF-? and TGF-? mRNA were detected by RT-PCR. Results Compared with DM control group, levels of GSP,myocardial enzymes and myocardial AngⅡ were much lower in APS group(P0.05).The level of expression of collagen Ⅰ,the ratio of collagen Ⅰ/collagen Ⅲ,and the activity of pro-MMP-2 and MMP-2 in APS group were significantly lower than those in the DM group(P

Objective To investigate the changes in toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) expression in the livers of diabetic rats after exercise at different intensities. Methods Fifty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a control group (NC),a diabetic group (DM),a low intensity exercise group (LIE),a medium intensity exercise group (MIE) and a high intensity exercise group (HIE),each of 10.The control group was given a normal diet.Type 2 diabetes was induced in the others through feeding a high-fat and high-sugar diet,as well as injecting a small dose of streptozotocin intraperitoneally. The three exercising groups swam to 40%,70% and 100% of their exhaustion times once a day,6 d/w for 6 weeks.Due to infection, drowning and other reasons, only 8 rats in each of the DM,LIE and MIE groups,as well as 7 in the HIE group survived. After the intervention, body weight, liver weight and fasting blood glucose (FBG) were tested. The expression of TLR4 and NF-κB mRNA in the livers was tested using RT-PCR technology, and the expression of TLR4 and NF-κB protein in the liver was tested using immunohistochemistry. Results Compared with the NC group, the average body weight and liver weight of the other four groups decreased significantly, while the FBG and the expression of TLR4 and NF-κB mRNA and protein increased significantly. There were significant differences among the exercise groups with the lowest values in the MIE group. Conclusion Six weeks of aerobic exercise can reduce FBG and the level of expression of TLR4 and NF-κB mRNA and protein in the liver,at least in rats. The effect of exercise at medium intensity is best.

OBJECTIVETo establish an HPLC fingerprint to evaluate the quality of Polygalae Radix, root xylem, and those collected in different growth ages or harvest time.
METHODSeparation was performed at 30 °C on a Kromasil C18 column (4.6 mm x 250 mm, 5 μm); the mobile phases was acetonitrile and 0.05% H3PO4 water in the gradient elution; the flow rate was set at 1.0 mL · min(-1) and the detection wavelength at 314 nm; the quality discriminant analyses were accomplished by means of similarity analysis, cluster analysis, principal component analysis and neural network model.
RESULTIn 26 batches of Polygalae Radix, 24 batches fingerprint similarities were above 0.8. In 5 different growth or harvest time batches, 4 batches were above 0.8; in 8 batches root xylem samples, the similarities were all above 0.875. The similarity analysis was in accord with the quality discriminant analysis of cluster analysis, principal component analysis and neural network model.
CONCLUSIONFingerprint combined with chemical pattern recognition technique can effectively evaluate the quality of Polygalae Radix. The active substance species are all similar in cultivated, wild, different growth or harvest time Polygalae Radix and polygala root xylem, but the chromatography peak areas are different. The effective material contents are similar between wild and cultivated Polygalae Radix, but each chromatographic peak area of the root xylem is much smaller than that of Polygalae Radix. The chemical substance accumulation mainly depends on harvest month, but little growth time in Polygalae Radix.

Background The senescence of alveolar type II epithelial cells is an important driving factor for the progression of silicotic fibrosis, and the regulatory effects of oxamate on the senescence of alveolar type II epithelial cells is still unclear. Objective To explore whether lactate dehydrogenase inhibitor oxamate can alleviate silicotic fibrosis in mice by inhibiting senescence of alveolar type II epithelial cellsMethods This study was divided into two parts: in vivo experiments and in vitro experiments. In the first part, forty SPF C57BL/6J male mice were randomly divided into four groups with 10 in each group: control group, silicosis model group, low-dose oxamate treatment group, and high-dose oxamate treatment group. The silicotic mouse model was established by intratracheal instillation of 50 μL SiO2 suspension (100 mg·mL−1). The treatment models were prepared by intraperitoneal injection of 100 μL oxamate (225 mmol·L−1 and

Objective To assess the quality of reporting randomized controlled trials published in Chinese journal of radiology from 2000 to 2005.Methods A manual search was performed and 22 checklists of CONSORT statements and other self-established criteria were applied. Results Six volumes and 72 issues were investigated. There were total trials of 236 in 2186 literatures, and finally 3 randomized controlled trials(RCTs)(1.27%)were identified. In the 3 RCTs,there were 3 trials with methods of randomization,1 with endpoints measurement,1 with multi-centre,but without the prior calculation of sample size, blind methods, statistically probability, participant flow, compliance and negative results. Conclusion The quality of reporting randomized controlled trials of interventional radiology has been improved, but it did not meet fully the CONSORT statement.
