This study was aimed to explore the effect of total flavonoids and saponins from Huang-Qi Ge-Gen (HQGG) decoction on blood glucose (BG), serum lipid, interleukin-12 (IL-12) and interleukin-15 (IL-15) of liver in diabetes mellitus (DM) rats, in order to investigate their interactions in regulating DM processes. A total of 66 SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups, which were the normal group, model group (A1B1), control group, total flavonoids group (A2B1), total saponins group (A1B2), and total flavonoids and saponins group (A2B2), with 11 rats in each group. Except the normal group, other groups were intraperitoneal injected with streptozotocin (STZ). And the experiment was according to 2×2 factorial design experiment scheme. The BG was determined before STZ injection and 7 days after the STZ injection. After 30 days, BG, serum lipid, IL-12 and IL-15 of liver were tested. Related indexes were calculated to the weighted composite score. Main and interactive effect of total flavonoids and saponins were studied according to the factorial design experiment scheme. The results showed that compared with the normal group, all indexes of model group showed statistical differences (P<0.05). Total flavonoids and saponins from HQGG decoction can effectively reduce BG, without any interactions between them. Both the total flavonoids and total saponins can reduce serum cholesterol (CHO), triglyceride (TG), liver IL-12 and IL-15. And there were interactive effects. The single use of herb achieved better effects than the combination. It was concluded that total flavonoids and saponins from HQGG decoction can reduce BG, CHO, TG, and liver IL-12 and IL-15 levels in rats. However, the regulation of total flavonoids and saponins on indexes mentioned above showed no additive effect.

Objective To study the factors which influence the dose distribution of brachytherapy in cervical cancer. Methods Ninety-five patients with cervical cancer Ⅱ - Ⅲ b received fundamental radiation therapy including brachytherapy in our department from Aug. 2004 to Nov. 2005. The deviation of isodose curve of brachytherapy was based on A-B reference system, and the deviation of dose was defined by measuring in a practical standard body model. Results The factors influencing isodose offset significantly were parametrial infiltrating degree, and anatomy factor of cervical cancer and operating skill. The degree of isodose offset could not be lowered with the increased frequency of brachytherapy. Conclusion Making simulation in cervical brachythecapy is necessary not only for the identification of the deviation of isodose curve but also for adjusting the dose distribution and revising the plan of radiotherapy.

Objective To investigate the 5-and 10-year survival and complications of patients with stage Ⅱb cervical carcinoma treated by pre-operative photon radiotherapy (POPRT) plus brachytherapy (192Ir) and selective lymphadenectomy hysterectomy (SLH) plus intra-operative electron radiotherapy (IOERT). Methods From February 1997 to May 2007, 160 patients with stage Ⅱb cervical carcinoma were treated by POPRT of 20 Gy in 10 fractions to the whole pelvis, 192Ir brachytherapy of 14 Gy in 2fractions, followed by IOERT of 18 -20 Gy to the whole pelvis during SLH one week after. Results The follow-up rate was 98.1%. The number of patients followed-up for 5 and 10 years was 143 and 135,respectively. The 5-year overall survival rate, disease-free survival rate and local control rate of all patients were 89.4%, 86. 3% and 96. 3%, with the corresponding 10-year rates of 84.4%, 81.0% and 95.0%,respectively. The radiation-induced rectitis and cystitis were 5.0% and 0. 6%, respectivly. The rate of hydronephrosis and lower extremity edema was 6. 3% and 1.3%, respectively. Conclusions Combination of EBRT plus 192Ir brachytherapy and SLH plus IOERT could improve the survival and local control of patiens with cervical carcinoma, with only a few side effects.

Objective: To investigate the role of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) in supporting hematopoiesis and the expansion of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells in vitro. Methods: According to the fact that HUVEC supernatant has colony stimulating activity shown by methylcellulose colony-forming assay and HUVEC can maintain the survival of mononuclear cells for at least four weeks in vitro, CD34+ cells from umbilical cord blood were seeded with (HUVEC group) or without (control group) HUVEC monolayer. Every week cells were collected and counted, the frequency of CFU-GM was measured by using methylcellulose colony-forming assay, and the percentage of CD34+ and CD41a+ cells was measured by flow cytometry. Results: In control group, all the CD34+ cells died in two weeks. However, in HUVEC group, most nucleated cells and CD34+ cells were expanded by 68.1±14.8 fold and 6.6±1.4 fold, respectively at the third week while CFU-GM expansion reached its peak (5.7±2.1 fold) at the week 2. Moreover, the percentage of CD41a+ cells was enhanced significantly, reaching a maximum (15.6%) at the week 3. Conclusions:HUVEC can support hematopoiesis in vitro and expand the hematopoietic progenitor cells and CD41a+ cells in direct contact coculture.

Tumor 2014;34(3):275-280
Objective: To discuss the clinical features and treatment of intracranial hemangiopericytoma (HPC). Methods: The medical records including clinical features, imaging features, pathological results and treatment methods in 31 patients with HPC were reviewed retrospectively. To compare the difference in progression-free survival (PFS) among patients receiving different treatments. Results: Thirty-one patients with initial HPC were treated with operation and radiation. Gross total removal (GTR) was achieved in 16 patients, followed by postoperative adjuvant fractionated external beam radiation therapy (EBRT). Of 15 patients with subtotal removal (STR), 6 patients accepted EBRT, and 9 patients were treated with adjuvant gamma knife surgery (GKS). The median PFS of patients with GTR (89 months, 64-126 months) was longer than that of patients with STR (49 months, 26-81 months) (P < 0.01). However, there was no significant difference in the median PFS of patients with STR between undergoing EBRT (49 months, 26-81 months) and GKS (47 months, 29-78 months) (P > 0.05). Conclusion: GTR followed by adjuvant radiation provides patients with a better outcome. Copyright © 2014 by TUMOR.
