Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2013;(36):6533-6540
BACKGROUND:Retinal diseases are caused by damage or apoptosis of the retinal cel s and lack of ideal treatment. Induced pluripotent stem cel s have self-renewal ability and differentiation potential. A new potential source from which to produce stem cel s as a therapeutic platform for the treatment of retinal diseases and avoid ethics issues is the research focus currently.
OBJECTIVE:To review recent advancement of induced pluripotent stem cel s and the potential utility for retinal diseases.
METHODS:The first author searched related articles published from 2006 to 2011 by computer retrieval in PubMed database using the keywords of“induced pluripotent stem cel s, retinal, photoreceptor, retinal pigment epithelium, retinal ganglion cel”in English. Final y, total y 42 papers were involved.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Induced pluripotent stem cel s can be induced to differentiate into retinal cel s which have a possibility to be used as donor cel s for transplantation therapies. Patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cel s can be used as disease models for mechanistic studies and drug screening. It is a promising therapy for retinal degenerative diseases. However, some problems stil remain, such as risk of teratoma formation and low efficiency of somatic cel s to be successful y induced into induced pluripotent stem cel s. It stil requires further more studies.

Chinese Journal of Experimental Ophthalmology 2011;29(11):998-1001
Background Erythropoietin (EPO) was proved to be express in hematopoietic tissue and nervous system and play the effects of stimulating blood cell production and protecting nervous tissue.Researches showed that EPO is expressed in the embryon brain of animal. However, whether EPO exist in nervous-derived retina and its action on retina with the development is concerned. Objective This research was to investigate the expression of EPO during the embryonic development period of rat retina and explore the role of EPO in retina development process. Methods Clean Wistar rats with pregnancy for 12 days,16 days and 20 days were collected, and the embryonic 12-day rats (E12 d,5 rats),embryonic 16-day rats (E16 d,5 rats) and embryonic 20-day rats ( E20 d,5 rats) were obtained by caesarean operation, and 5 12-month W istar rats were used as controls. The rats were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and the retinal sections were prepared in the different-embryo-phase (12 d,16 d,20d) and growth phase. The expression of EPO protein and mRNA in rat retina was detected by immunohistochemistry and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR),respectively.The feed and use of the animals followed the Regulation for the Administration of Affair Concerning Experimental Animals by State Science and Technology Commission. Results EPO was positively expressed in the cytoplasm and nuclei in the neuroepithelial layer and pigment epithelium of every-embryo-phase rats but only in retinal ganglion cell layer in 12-month-old rats. The gray scale values of EPO expression in retina were 105.55±10.35,99.35± 8.71,83.27± 7.84and 30.30± 3.80 in E12 d rats,E16 d rats,E20 d rats and 12-month-old rats respectively with a statistically significant difference (F=76.13,P<0.01 ).RT-PCR revealed that the relative values of EPO mRNA expression in retina were 0.876±0.10,0.861 ±0.09 and 0.256±0.03 in E16 d rats,E20 d rats and 12-month-old rats respectively, presenting a elevated value in embryonic rats compared with adult rats ( P =0.00).Gel imaging deletion showed that the A value of EPO amplification products was highest in E16 d rats and lowest in adult rats. Conclusions The expression of EPO appears a high to low fashion during the embryonic development of Wistar rats, which is closely associated with the developing procedure of retina.

To observe the clinical outcome of implanting AcrySof lQ Toric intraocular lens to correct corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery, and to evaluate the result and rotational stability of AcrySof lQ Toric after cataract surgery.
●METHODS: A retrospective study of 26 eyes in 21 cataract patients with corneal astigmatism. All patients implanted AcrySof lQ Toric intraocular lens. The preoperative and postoperative uncorrected visual acuity ( UCVA ), best corrected visual acuity ( BCVA ), preoperative corneal astigmatism, anticipated residual astigmatism, total astigmatism, postoperative residual astigmatism and Toric lens axis were detected and measured.
●RESULTS: All patients' visual acuity and best corrected visual acuity improved significantly. The mean refractive cylinder decreased significantly after surgery from (2. 05± 0. 57)D to (0. 55±0. 33)D (t = 13. 574, P<0. 05). There was no significant difference between preoperative ( 0. 47 ± 0. 19)D and postoperative corneal astigmatism (t = 1. 149, P > 0. 05 ). Three months after surgery, there was no significant difference between preoperative (2. 01±0. 58)D and postoperative (-1. 89±0. 53) D corneal astigmatism (t =1. 908, P> 0. 05). The rotation of intraocular lens were <20°, the mean rotation was 3. 65°±2. 86°.
●CONCLUSlON: The AcrySof lQ Toric lens make cataract patients enjoy the better UCVA including good rotational stability in the correct of corneal astigmatism. The AcrySof lQ Toric implantation is an effective option for the correct of preexisting corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery.
