Objective To investigate the clinical value of galectin-3 expression on fine needle aspiration (FNA) smearsandtissueslicesof thyroid tumors in distinguishing benign from malignant tumors. Methods Galectin-3 expression on FNA smears and tissue slices of thyroid tumors from 72 thyroidectomy specimens was detected by immunochemical method (SP method). Results Galectin-3 expression was high on FNA smears and tissue slices of malignant thyroid tumors, whereas there was no or low expression of galectin-3 on FNA smears and tissue slices of benign thyroid tumors. The difference of positive rates of galectin-3 expression between malignant and benign thyroid tumors was significant on both FNA smears and tissue slices (? 2=43.73 and ? 2=48.16, respectively, both P0.05). Conclusion Galectin-3 expression is different between benign and malignant tumors. Galectin-3 expression level is higher in FNA smears and tissue slices of malignant thyroid neoplasms than that of benign ones, suggesting that galectin-3 is a reliable molecular marker in distinguishing benign from malignant thyroid tumors. Galectin-3 expression with immunochemical method may be used in diagnosing benign or malignant thyroid tumors.

Background and purpose:T-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma(T-NHL) has relatively high incidence in Asian countries, and the incidence rate showed an upward tendency. It has a dual characteristic of both ethnic and regional. We conducted this study in order to analyze the clinical characteristics, pathological type and survival of T-NHL in our hospital. Methods:Records of 50 cases with T-NHL treated from Jan. 2002 to Dec. 2012, were analyzed in terms of clinical characteristics, distribution of pathological type and survival. Results:Patients with T-NHL account for 24%of NHL cases in our study. Of the 50 cases, 37 were Han, 13 were Uygur; The most frequent type was NK/T cell lymphoma(NK/TCL)(16/50, 32%). We performed pathological type for each age group:4 cases with children’s group were all T-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma(T-LBL)(4/4,100%), the most frequent type of youth and middle age group was NK/TCL(8/20, 40%;7/13, 53.8%), as the senile group was angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma(AITL)(6/13, 46.2%). There was also a signiifcant difference in pathological type between the stage, with stageⅠ-Ⅱwere all NK/TCL(12/12, 100%), stageⅢ-Ⅳwere observed with peripheral T-cell lymphomas-unspeciifed(PTCL-U)(9/38, 23.7%) and AITL(9/38, 23.7%). The frequent type of Han was NK/TCL(14/37, 37.8%), as the Uygur was T-LBL(5/13, 38.5%). The median overall survival(OS) time was 12 (ranged 0-112) months. The 5 year OS rate was 39%. Both pathological type and age group were important factors influencing survival. The difference in outcome for the pathological type(P<0.05): NK/TCL and anaplastic large cell lymphoma(ALCL) had the better 3 year OS rates(71%, 61%), but PTCL-U and T-LBL had poor prognosis(19%, 7%). Age did a signiifcant effect on OS(P<0.05):children’s group had the worse 5-year OS rate (0%), middle age group had a better prognosis (67%), the OS of the youth group was 35%, for the senile group was 21%. Conclusion:T-NHL in Xinjiang region have their unique clinical characteristics:The overall incidence rate was similar with the domestic report, however, higher than the reports abroad. The incidence of Han was higher than Uygur. Pathological type showed in this study was different from that in European and American countries. There was a significant difference in distribution of pathological type in different age group, stage and nation. The long-term survival and prognosis of patients in Xinjiang region was poor. Both pathological type and age group were important factors inlfuencing survival.

Objective To establish a specific, sensitive, simple human respiratory adenovirus detection method to put a good experimental foundation for developing universal and specific diagnostic reagents of human respiratory adenovirus. Methods The nucleotide sequences of 10 serotype of human respiratory adenovirus were obtained from GenBank.Highly consewed five pairs of universal and specific adenovirus primers were designed on the evaluation of multiple sequence alignment of the 10 full genomic sequences with the software DNAMAN 5.2.2,Gene Runner 3.05,BLAST,and to ensure that the polymerase chain reaction(PCR)products were type-specific.NP-40 sample lytic method was employed to prepare the template. The effectiveness, specificity and sensitivity of primers were evaluated. And PCR was carried out to test 64 samples of throat swabs of acute respiratory infection children. The positive PCR products were sequenced directly to identify the adenovirus serotypes. The positive specimens was inoculated on HeLa cells to observe cytopathie effect(CPE)under light microscope, and virus morphology were observed under electron microscope. Results BLAST results indicated that the five pairs of primers were specific adenovirus primers with low homology to the others. The primers were identified as PCR positive fragments obtained by using five pairs of primers to amplify the human adenovirus type 3 DNA,which did not react to the respiratory syncytial virus and Coxsackie virus.the effectiveness and specificity of the primer were thus indicated.PCR sensitive results showed 10-5 dilutin of adenovirus culture and DNA sample could be deteeted which meant the method was sensitive and stable. Two PCR positive specimens were detected in 64 clinical samples.the positive rate was 3.13%(2/64).Using the two PCR positive specimens to inoculate the HeLa cells, the typical adenovirus CPEs of rounded and aggregated, detatched cells were observed under light microscope. And a large number of adenovirus typical particles with characteristic lattice arrangement were observed in the infected cells under electron microscope.PCR product sequencing results showed that these two isolated adenoviruses were typed in human adenovims group B.Conclusions Universal and specific adenovirus PCR primers with the serotype specificity of the PCR products were designed successfully. The PCR primers was sensitive and specific and could be routinely applied in clinical adenovirus diagnosis for respiratory specimens.

OBJECTIVE:
To determine the expressions of Notch1, Jagged1 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to explore its clinical pathological significance.
METHODS:
Immunohistochemical SP method was used to detect the expressions of Notch1, Jagged1 and VEGF in 65 patients with NSCLC and 15 normal epithelial tissues of the lung, and the relationship between them and clinic-pathological parameters were analyzed.
RESULTS:
The positive rates of Notch1, Jagged1 and VEGF in NSCLC were 81.5%, 83.1% and 93.8%, respectively, higher than those in normal epithelial tissues of the lung (P<0.05). The positive expression levels of Notch1 and VEGF were closely associated with the tumor stage and the lymph node metastasis (P<0.05). The positive expression levels of Jagged1 was positively correlated with the pathological type and lymph node metastasis. There was a positive correlation between Notch1, Jagged1 and VEGF.
CONCLUSION
Notch1, Jagged1 and VEGF protein may play an important role in the pathway of carcinogenesis and progression of NSCLC. The up-regulation of Notch1, Jagged1 and VEGF protein expression probably predict NSCLC carrying relatively strong permeation and metastasis.

OBJECTIVETo retrospectively assess serious systemic adverse effects of standardized dust-mite vaccine in children with asthma.
METHODSMedical records of 704 children (5-17 years in age) with asthma between January, 2005 and December, 2011 were reviewed. Serious systemic adverse events following treatment with a standardized dust-mite vaccine in these children were analyzed.
RESULTSA total of 336 systemic adverse reactions were observed in 17.0% (120/704) of the patients analyzed of these adverse reactions, 18 (5.4%) were serious (level 3), 318 (94.6%) were not serious (below level 3), and no single case of anaphylactic shock (level 4) was recorded. Systemic adverse events occurred most frequently in the 5 to 11-year age group and in the summer season (from June to August). In the 18 severe cases, the peak expiratory flow (PEF) dropped by 20% immediately after the vaccine injection, and other major clinical symptoms included cough, wheezing and urticaria. All children with serious systemic adverse effects were given inhaled hormone and atomized short-acting beta agonists, oral antihistamines, intravenous dexamethasone and/or intramuscular adrenaline. After these treatments, the clinical symptoms were significantly relieved.
CONCLUSIONSThe rate of serious systemic adverse events following allergen-specific immunotherapy is relatively low in children with allergic asthma. Conventional medications are effective in managing these immunotherapy-associated adverse events.

Journal of Central South University(Medical Sciences) 2007;32(3):503-506
OBJECTIVE:
To observe the effect of sevoflurane on the induction and maintenance of anaesthesia in children, and to evaluate its safety and effectiveness.
METHODS:
Forty child patients who conformed to the selection standard were operated under anaesthesia with intubation.Without premedicant, all the patients inhaled 100% oxygen(1L/min) and sevoflurane by mask, and escalated the concentration of sevoflurane (to the maximum concentration 7%) until the lash reflex disappeared, and the maintenance concentration was controlled under 4%. All the patients were intubated, together with vecuronium 0.1mg/kg.
RESULTS:
With little tract excretion, the achievement ratio of induction by sevoflurane was 100%, and the children tolerated well. With stable hemodynajmics,1% approximately 4.0% maintenance concentration of sevoflurane during the operation showed effective anaesthesia, no decreased heart rate or blood pressure appeared, and all the patients' body temperature was normal.
CONCLUSION
Sevoflurane for children induction can bring fewer stimuli in the respiratory tract, less cardiac vascular inhibition and palinesthesia time. Anaesthesia in children induced by sevoflurane is safe and effective.
