Objective To determine the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in the hippocampus of rats with Alzheimer's disease(AD), and to determine the effect of butylphthalide on them and its significance. Methods Sixty male adult rats were randomly divided into a model group, a Butylphthalide group, and a control group. AD models were established by injecting β-amyloid protein 1-42 into the hippocampus of rats. Sixty days later, the rats were sacrificed and both sides of the hippocampus were sectioned for immunohistochemistry. Results Positive cells of GFAP in the hippocampus of the model group increased and the expression of VEGF decreased statistically, compared with the control group(P<0.01). The positive cells of GFAP in the hippocampus of the butylphthalide group decreased and the expression of VEGF increased significantly, compared with the model group(P<0.05). Conclusion Butylphthalide may protect the neuron-vascular unit of the hippocampus of Alzheimer model rats by inhibiting the expression of GFAP and increasing the expression of VEGF.

Long-term excessive iodine intake resulted in an increased TT_4 level and a decreased TT_3 level in maternal serum, meanwhile, hepatic and renal type 1 deiodinase activity decreased dose-dependently.A significant reduction in type 2 deiodinase ( D2 ) activity of 12.5 d placenta was found in 3.0 mg/L or above groups. For 19.5 d uterus,D2 activity decreased and type 3 deiodinase activity increased. The results suggest that excessive iodine has an effect on the embryonic development by regulating maternal-fetal thyroid hormone metabolism.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical characteristics, surgical procedures and prognosis of duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs).
METHODSThe clinical data of 18 GIST patients, collected from 1995 to 2004, were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTSThe lesions of duodenal GISTs mainly located in the descending duodenum (13/18), unusually in the horizontal part (2/18), ascending part (1/18), and the bulb (2/18). Pathological examination revealed 1 case of benign tumor, 2 cases of borderline tumors and 15 cases of malignant tumors, Microscopically, the tumors were composed of spindle cells (14 cases), epithelial cell (1 case), and mixed cell types (3 cases). The clinical manifestations were non-specific, mostly was melena (7/18), as well as abdominal pain (6/18), fullness (5/18), and anemia (3/18). The diagnoses were performed by upper gastrointestinal radiography, gastroscopy, endoscopic ultrasonography and CT scan. All of the 18 patients received surgical treatment, including 9 pancreaticoduodenectomies, 5 local resections, 3 segmental resections of duodenum, and 1 distal subtotal gastrectomy. 1 and 3 year survival rates were 100% and 86.7% respectively.
CONCLUSIONMost duodenal GISTs are malignant, and the choices of surgical procedures are mainly determined by the location and size of the tumors.

Background and objective Localization of pulmonary ground glass small nodule is the technical dif-ficulty of minimally invasive operation resection. The aim of this study is to evaluate the value of intraoperative computed tomography (CT)-guided localization using a hook-wire system for small ground glass opacity (GGO) in minimally invasive resection, as well as to discuss the necessity and feasibility of surgical resection of small GGOs (<10 mm) through a minimally invasive approach.MethodshTe records of 32 patients with 41 small GGOs who underwent intraoperative CT-guided double-thorn hook wire localization prior to video-assisted thoracoscopic wedge resection from October 2009 to October 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients received video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) within 10 min atfer wire localiza-tion. hTe effcacy of intraoperative localization was evaluated in terms of procedure time, VATS success rate, and associated complications of localization. Results A total of 32 patients (15 males and 17 females) underwent 41 VATS resections, with 2 simultaneous nodule resections performed in 3 patients, 3 lesion resections in 1 patient, and 5 lesions in a patient. Nodule di-ameters ranged from 2 mm-10 mm (mean: 5 mm). hTe distance of lung lesions from the nearest pleural surfaces ranged within 5 mm-24 mm (mean: 12.5 mm). All resections of lesions guided by the inserted hook wires were successfully performed by VATS (100% success rate). hTe mean procedure time for the CT-guided hook wire localization was 8.4 min (range: 4 min-18 min). hTe mean procedure time for VATS was 32 min (range: 14 min-98 min). hTe median hospital time was 8 d (range: 5 d-14 d). Results of pathological examination revealed 28 primary lung cancers, 9 atypical adenomatous hyperplasia, and 4 nonspe-ciifc chronic inlfammations. No major complication related to the intraoperative hook wire localization and VATS was noted. Conclusion Intraoperative CT-guided hook wire localization is useful, particularly in small GGO localization in VATS wedge resection and has a signiifcantly low rate of minor complications. Lung GGOs carry a 90% risk of malignancy. Aggressive surgi-cal resection of these GGOs is necessary and feasible through the guidance of intraoperative CT localization technique.

OBJECTIVETo study the technique of Western blot for the diagnosis of Lyme disease caused by Borrelia afzelii in China and to establish the standard criteria by operational procedure.
METHODSFP1, which is the representative strain of B. afzelii in China, was analyzed by SDS-PAGE, electro transfer and immunoblotting assays. The molecular weights of the protein bands of FP1 were analyzed by Gel-Pro analysis software. In a study using 451 serum samples (159 patients with Lyme disease and 292 controls), all observed bands were recorded. The accuracy of the WB as a diagnostic test was established by using the ROC curve and Youden index.
RESULTSCriteria for a positive diagnosis of Lyme disease were established as at least one band of P83/100, P58, P39, OspB, OspA, P30, P28, OspC, P17, and P14 in the IgG test and at least one band of P83/100, P58, P39, OspA, P30, P28, OspC, P17, and P41 in the IgM test. For IgG criteria, the sensitivity, specificity and Youden index were 69.8%, 98.3%, and 0.681, respectively; for IgM criteria, the sensitivity, specificity and Youden index were 47%, 94.2%, and 0.412, respectively.
CONCLUSIONEstablishment of WB criteria for B. afzelii is important in validating the diagnostic assays for Lyme disease in China.

OBJECTIVETo prepare a novel strontium-containing calcium sulfate and assess its and biocompatibility.
METHODSA novel strontium-containing α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (Sr-caS) bone substitute as prepared with hydrothermal reaction and examined for X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric differential scanning calorimetric (TG-DSC) patterns. The biocompatibility of the material was evaluated by in vitro cytotoxicity test in L-929 cells, hemolysis test of blood, and in vivo implantation test in SD rats.
RESULTSThe XRD spectra of the prepared Sr-CaS powder highlighted 3 strong characteristic peaks of α-CaSO4 at 14.63°, 25.72° and 29.80° with a strontium-specific peak at 24.78°. The FTIR patterns of Sr-CaS resembled those of CaS. TG-DSC results showed that the material contained a non-evaporable water content of 6.03%. In vitro cytotoxicity test in L-929 cells suggested that the material had a class 1 cytotoxicity, and the hemolysis rate of its aqueous extract was 4.3%. The material implanted in the muscular tissues of SD rats maintained a steady state in the surrounding tissues.
CONCLUSIONThis strontium-containing calcium sulfate material we prepared shows an excellent biocompatibility for potential use as a novel artificial bone material.

BACKGROUNDRepetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive technique used to alter cortex excitability that has been proposed as an efficient method for treating brain hyperexcitability or hypoexcitability disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate whether high-frequency rTMS could have any beneficial effects in restless legs syndrome (RLS).
METHODSFourteen patients with RLS were given high-frequency rTMS (15 Hz, 100% motor threshold) to the leg representation motor cortex area of the frontal lobe for 14 sessions over 18 days. Patients were diagnosed according to the international criteria proposed by the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group in 2003. The International RLS Rating Scale (IRLS-RS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) and Hamilton Depression Scale were used to evaluate the severity of RLS, sleep quality, anxiety and depression, respectively. The scale scores were evaluated at four-time points (baseline, end of the 14 th session, and at 1- and 2-month posttreatment). One-way analysis of variance was used to compare scale scores at different time points.
RESULTSThere was significant improvement in the IRLS-RS (from 23.86 ± 5.88 to 11.21 ± 7.23, P < 0.05), PSQI (from 15.00 ± 4.88 to 9.29 ± 3.91, P < 0.05), and HAMA (from 17.93 ± 7.11 to 10.36 ± 7.13, P < 0.05) scale scores at the end of 14 th session, with ongoing effects lasting for at least 2 months.
CONCLUSIONSHigh-frequency rTMS can markedly alleviate the motor system symptoms, sleep disturbances, and anxiety in RLS patients. These results suggest that rTMS might be an option for treating RLS.
