Objective: To evaluate the protective effect of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on intestinal barrier functionin rats with acute pancreatitis. Methods: Thirty-two male SD rats received injection of sodium taurocholate solution(3. 5 mg?L-1) into the pancreatic duct were randomly divided into control group (n=16) and treatment group (n=16). Animals incontrol group received total parenteral nutrition (TPN), animals in treatment group were fed on the same TPN formula ascontrol group and injections of EGF at a dose of 0. 2 mg' kg l' day--'. Rats were sacrificed on d 1 and d 5 of TPN. Concen-tration of xylose and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran in superior mesenteric vein (SMV), protein and DNA contentin je junal mucosa were determined. Samples from SMV, mesenteric lymph nodes, pancreas, liver, spleen were harvested forcultures. Results: FITC-dextran concentration in treatment group was significantly lower than in control group [(3. 4?0. 7)vs (7. 5?0. 9) mg. L-1, P<0. 0l]. Protein and DNA content in je junal mucosa in treatment group were significantly higherthan in control group [(2. 65?0. 23) vs (1. 12?0. 18) mg? cm-1, (0. 25?0. 07) vs (0. 12?0. 04) mg?cm-1, P

Objective To investigate the role of survivin and P53 in apoptosis of gastric adeno- carcinoma,as well as its relationship with the clinicopathologic features and the prognosis. Methods The gas- tric tissue microarrays were composed of those from 100 cases of gastric cancer and 30 controls. At these tissue microarrays, expressions of survivin and P53 were investigated immunohistochemically, and tumor cell apoptosis index was examined by TUNEL method.Of the 100 cases,47 cases were followed-up from 14 months to 13 years,in which the survival was analyzed. Results Two paraffin-embedded gastric carcinoma tissue micro- arrays were successfully constructed, including 114 and 116 tissue spots, respectively.Immunohistochemical analysis showed that survivin was expressed in 78 cases (78%).No expression of survivin was detected in control tissue (P0.05).In the 47 cases with followed-up data, univariant analysis revealed that the survival was correlated with invading of vessel and nerve,TNM stages, and expression of survivin. The histological grades and expression of P53 were not related to prognosis. However,Cox stepwise proportional hazards analysis showed that only TNM staging and survivin status retained significant independently in prospecting prognosis. Conclusions The expression of survivin was associated with the pathologic features,TNM stages and prognosis in gastric carcinoma, indicating that overex- pression of survivin may be a poor prognosis factor for gastric carcinoma.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2015;32(5):1125-1130
In view of the problems of more artificial interventions and segmentation defects in existing two-dimensional segmentation methods and abnormal liver segmentation errors in three-dimensional segmentation methods, this paper presents a semi-automatic liver organ segmentation method based on the image sequence context. The method takes advantage of the existing similarity between the image sequence contexts of the prior knowledge of liver organs, and combines region growing and level set method to carry out semi-automatic segmentation of livers, along with the aid of a small amount of manual intervention to deal with liver mutation situations. The experiment results showed that the liver segmentation algorithm presented in this paper had a high precision, and a good segmentation effect on livers which have greater variability, and can meet clinical application demands quite well.

Objective: To determine the inhibitory effects of maltitol-gum on Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacilli and Actinomyces viscosus in dental plaque. Methods: Thirty 13-15 years old children with DMFS>4 were divided into three groups, maltitol chewing gums group(A group), xylitol chewing gum group(B group) and blank gum base group (C group). The plaque samples were collected and colony forming units were counted. Results: The levels of three-species cariogenic pathogens in three groups were statistically down-regulated when compared with the baseline(P<0.001).Moreover, A group and B group resulted in a higher decrease of Streptococcus mutans levels compare with C group(P<0.05). The levels of Lactobacilli and Actinomyces viscosus were not statistically different between groups(P>0.05). Conclusion: Maltitol-gum can lead to a significant suppression on Streptococcus mutans levels in dental plaque, while the inhibitory effect of the maltitol-gum on Lactobacilli, Actinomyces viscosus is not obvious.
