Journal of Integrative Medicine 2011;9(12):1292-300
Many clinical studies showed that the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes in stroke have been dynamically changing since the onset of the disease. The changing of TCM syndromes can be attributed to multiple correlative factors such as age, sex, area distribution, underlying diseases, and constitutional factor. Data-driven methods involving multivariate statistical methods and descriptive approach have been used to analyze the regularity of dynamically changed TCM syndromes of stroke. However, expressing non-linear relationship between symptom or correlative factors and syndrome patterns by data-driven models is challenging. Model-driven methods involving artificial neural networks and Bayesian networks are new methods for studying the changes in TCM syndromes in patients with stroke. In this review, the authors summarized the studies of dynamically changed patterns of stroke syndromes based on data-driven methods and some clinical trials on TCM syndromes based on model-driven methods. Further studies are needed to improve the understanding of the dynamically changing regularity of TCM syndromes for stroke by using model-driven methods so as to develop appropriate and timely TCM treatments.

Objective To evaluate whether Ly294002,suppressing phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K)/AKT survival signaling pathway, can change the sensitivity of breast cancer cells to radiotherapy. Methods Breast cancer cultured MCF7 cells treated with:radiation alone;Ly294002;or the combination of radiation and Ly294002.The inhibition of PI3K/AKT by Ly294002 was confirmed by Western blot.Clo- nogenic assay was used quantitatively to measure the mitotic cell death, and caspase-3 assay was used to e- valuate apoptosis. Results 1.Ly29400 could partially inhibit phosphorylated AKT but not radiation, the combination of both could enhance the inhibition of phosphorylated AKT,2.Timing of exposing cells to Ly294002 had some impact on clonogenic survival by radiation, one hour pre-radiation and 10 days post-ra- diation exposing to Ly294002 could maximally sensitize the cells to irradiation,3.Ly29400 combined with radiation could synergistically enhance mitotic death and apoptosis of MCF7 cells, with SER of SF_4 and D_0, being equal to 1.25 and 1.42.Conclusions PI3K/AKT pathway may be a potential target for enhancing the response of breast cancer cells to radiotherapy.

L9 (3(4)) orthogonal experiment was used to design the extraction technology of compound Clematidis Radix spray. Weight coefficients of active ingredients and dry extract rate were solved by information entropy. Support vector machine (SVM) was established and the model parameters were optimized through the genetic algorithm. Grid search algorithm was used for optimization of extraction technology of Clematidis Radix spray. The optimal extraction technology was to extract Clematidis Radix spray in water with 6 times the weight of herbal medicine for 3 times, with 2 h once. Bias of value between real and predicted by SVM was 1.23%. SVM was compared with traditional intuitive analysis of orthogonal design. It indicates that the new method used to optimize the extraction parameters of compound Clematidis Radix spray is more accurate and reliable.

Objective To assess the clinical significance of modular femoral component in restoring femoral offset after total hip arthroplasty. Methods Data of 75 patients, who had undergone THA with modular femoral component from June 2009 to June 2012,were retrospectively analyzed. There were 42 males and 33 females, aged from 44 to 83 years (average,64.7±12 years). There were 40 cases of left hip and 35 cases of right hip.The average Harris hip score was 54±6 (range,32 to 65) before operation. The Zimmer M/L Taper hip prosthesis with Kinectiv technology was used in all patients.Preoperative templating was utilized to accurately predict the prosthetic size and the femoral offset.During the surgery, the femoral offset was measured accurately, and the appropriate femoral neck prosthesis was selected in order to restore the femoral offset and reconstruct hip abductor moment arm.The femoral offset and leg length were measured according to X-rays after operation. The Harris hip score was used to assess the clinical results. Results The femoral offset was reconstructed in all patients, ranging from-3.0 to 3.0 mm (average,1.3±0.3 mm).The average leg length discrepancy was improved to 3.0±0.8 mm.All patients were followed up for 6 to 36 months (average,19.7 months). The average hip abduction angle was 40°±10° at 12 weeks after operation. The average Harris hip score was 86±13 (range,65-94) at 12 weeks after operation and 95±15 (range,78 to 98) at final follow-up.There was no hip dislocation and femoral acetabular impingement syndrome. Conclusion Modular femoral component can restore femoral offset without changing the leg length, which can result in good hip abductor strength, range of motion of the hip and stability,as well as less complications.
