BACKGROUND:Donkey-hide glue reinforcing bone oral solution (DGRBOS) is effective on preventing and treating fracture, but the mechanism of harmacology is still not clear. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) are important cytokines, which can promote blood vessel growth and osseous anabolism during fracture healing.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of DGRBOS on expression of VEGF and FGF-2 in the process of fracture healing of SD rats' fracture of tibia in bony callus, and explore the mechanism of DGRBOS in the treatment of fracture.DESIGN: A completely randomized controlled study.SETTING: Department of Traumatic Orthopedics, Union Hospital Affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.MATERIALS: Ninety female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, with a mean weight of (368±40) g, aged about 3 months, wereprovided by Center of Animal Experiment, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology.Experimental drug: DGRBOS was donated by Xinjiang Huashidan Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. The qili linking bone pill, positive control drug, was purchased from Hunan Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.METHODS: This experiment was carried out in the Laboratory for Bone Metabolism of Integration of Chinese and Western Medicine (Laboratory of Provincial Level), Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology from June to November 2005. Transverse midshaft fractures were produced on the right tibia in these rats using three-point bending technique, and 90 rats were randomly divided into three experimental groups:the DGRBOS group (n =30): according to medicine conversional method between human being and animal, 2 mL DGRBOS was fed to every mouse by intragastric administration at 2 vices/day; the qili linking bone pill group (positive control group, n =30): the pills dissolved in distilled water at 225 g/L, and consequently were administered intragastrically into mice at 2 mL/vice and 2 vices/day; normal saline group (negative control group, n =30): normal saline was administered intragastrically into mice at the coordinative capacity and same frequences. Selecting 4, 7, 14,21 and 28 days during the experiment, the immunohistochemistry method was adopted to detect the change of expression of VEGF and FGF-2 through computing value of mean optical degree (MOD) and number of the positive cells.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the efficacy and safety of trigonella foenum-graecum L. total saponins (TFGs) in combination with sulfonylureas (SU) in the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) not well controlled by SU alone.
METHODSSixty-nine T2DM patients whose blood glucose levels were not well controlled by oral sulfonylureas hypoglycemic drug were randomly assigned to the treated group (46 cases) and the control group (23 cases), and were given TFGs or placebo three times per day, 6 pills each time for 12 weeks, respectively. Meanwhile, the patients continued taking their original hypoglycemic drugs. The following indexes, including effects on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) symptoms, fast blood glucose (FBG), 2-h post-prandial blood glucose (2h PBG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), clinical symptomatic quantitative scores (CSQS), body mass index (BMI), as well as hepatic and renal functions, were observed and compared before and after treatment.
RESULTSThe efficacy on TCM symptoms was obviously better in the treated group than that in the control group (P<0.01), and there were statistically remarkable decreases in aspect of FBG, 2h PBG, HbA1c and CSQS in the treated group as compared to those in the control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01), while no significant difference was found in BMI, hepatic and renal functions between the two groups (P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe combined therapy of TFGs with sulfonylureas hypoglycemic drug could lower the blood glucose level and ameliorate clinical symptoms in the treatment of T2DM, and the therapy was relatively safe.

Objective·To explore the value of applying CT/MRI image registration and fusion combined with 3D printing technique in pre-surgical planning of refractory pelvic tumors. Methods·A retrospective analysis was performed on the cases with refractory pelvic tumors admitted between March 2014 and December 2016 in Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. CT/MRI examinations were performed as a routine pre-surgical procedure, and the resulting images were subject to rapid registration and fusion with the Medraw software in order to accurately determine the tumor boundaries and to be used as references in designing and making patient-specific tumor models, prostheses, and implants by 3D printing technique. Results·A total of 13 cases with refractory pelvic tumors were included in this study (8 cases of chondrosarcoma, 1 case of osteosarcoma with aneurysmal bone cyst, 1 case of dedifferentiated sarcoma, 1 case of fibrous connective tissue hyperplasia, 1 case of solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma, and 1 case of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma) with an average age of (50.0±8.5) years. According to the Enneking classification, there were 2 cases in zone Ⅰ , 2 in zones Ⅰ + Ⅱ , 1 in zones Ⅱ + Ⅲ , 3 in zones Ⅰ + Ⅱ + Ⅲ , 1 in zones Ⅰ + Ⅱ + Ⅳ , 1 in zonesⅠ + Ⅱ + Ⅲ + Ⅳ , 1 in zones Ⅰ + Ⅳ , 1 in zones Ⅱ + Ⅳ , and 1 in zone Ⅳ. The mean maximal tumor diameter was (15.15±4.81) cm without implicating the pelvic blood vessels. Results from intraoperative frozen section at resection boundaries and the installation of prosthesis showed that the actual surgical procedure was consistent with the surgical planning based on the reported image fusion technique. Conclusion·CT/MRI image registration and fusion technique combined with 3D printing technique can accurately determine the resection boundary of pelvic tumors and assist in designing of individualized prosthesis model and surgical guide, which has a great value in pre-surgical planning and clinical treatment of refractory pelvic tumors.

Objective:To extract the early result of postoperative echocardiographic evaluation in patients underwent left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation, and to assess the efficacy of surgical treatment for end-staged heart failure. Methods:Between June 2019 and May 2023, the patients underwent left ventricular assist device implantation were enrolled in this study. Demographic baseline characteristics and perioperative echocardiographic parameters were collected and analyzed. Results:A total of 28 patients were included in the study. After LVAD implantation, the heart sizes of the patients obviously reduced and the left heart contractibility function improved. The right ventricular contractibility remained stable. The proportion of the patients with moderate to severe mitral regurgitation was significantly reduced, but patients with mild to moderate aortic insufficiency increased. No serious complications such as death, pericardial tamponade and thrombosis events were observed during the follow-up period. Conclusion:LVAD implantation improved the left cardiac function, while the right cardiac function remained stable. However, it should be paid attention that the aortic valve function was impaired after the surgery. Generally, the early results of LVAD implantation for the treatment of end-stage heart failure were satisfactory.

National Journal of Andrology 2019;25(5):329-332
Objective:
To investigate the attitudes of prostate cancer (PCa) patients towards postoperative penile rehabilitation and their influencing factors.
METHODS:
Seventy-nine PCa patients underwent radical prostatectomy from January through June 2017 and all received a questionnaire investigation before surgery on IIEF-5 and their attitudes towards postoperative penile rehabilitation. We analyzed the reasons for the patients' rejection of postoperative penile rehabilitation.
RESULTS:
Totally 56 (71%) of the patients accepted and the other 23 (29%) refused postoperative penile rehabilitation. The factors influencing their attitudes towards penile rehabilitation mainly included age (P = 0.023), income (P = 0.040), tumor stage (P = 0.044), and preoperative sexual activity (P = 0.004). The patients who accepted penile rehabilitation had significantly higher IIEF-5 scores than those who refused it (14.75 ± 0.88 vs 8.48 ± 1.16, P = 0.000 2). During the follow-up period, only 29 (36.7%) of the patients bought the vacuum erection device but not the other 50 (63.3%). The tumor stage (P = 0.004), income (P < 0.01) and preoperative androgen-deprivation therapy (P = 0.039) significantly influenced the patients' decision on the purchase of the device. Relevant admission education achieved a 45% decrease in the number of the patients unwilling to accept penile rehabilitation for worrying about its negative effect on cancer treatment, a 25% decrease in those rejecting penile rehabilitation because of age, and a 20% decrease in those refusing it due to the tumor stage. The cost of treatment was an important reason for the patients' rejection of postoperative penile rehabilitation.
CONCLUSIONS
The tumor stage and income are the main factors influencing PCa patients' decision on postoperative penile rehabilitation. Relevant admission education and reduced cost of rehabilitation are important for popularization of postoperative penile rehabilitation in PCa patients.
