1.Progress in research on antioxidants and obesity
Chinese Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism 1986;0(04):-
It has been reported that the level of antioxidants is lower in obese patients compared with that in normal weight subjects. Important antioxidants, vitamin E and ?-carotene, are lowered in obese adults and children, which may cause lipid super oxidation and are associated with atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction. Copper and zinc are trace elements that compose parts of enzymes such as CuZn-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD) which can scavenge free radicals. Plasma copper and zinc levels are lowered in obese individuals, which may lead to abnormality in glucose metabolism.
2.Research progress in clinical use of LCarnitine
Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition 2004;0(05):-
L-Carnitine plays an essential role in the transfer of long chain fatty acids from the cytoplasm of a cell into the mitochondrion, where they undergo ?-oxidation.Carnitine deficiency is characterized by plasma and tissue carnitine concentrations below those required for the normal functions of the organism, including cardiomyopathy, myopathy, hypoketonemia, hypoglycemia, hyperammonemia.Studies show that supplement of carnitine could improve the clinical symptoms of some diseases.

ObjectiveTo compare the effects of two methods for the treatment of delayed defecation of neonatal meconium. Methods Sixty-seven neonates with delayed defecation of neonatal meconium were divided into experiment group (n=37) and control group (n=30). The former group was managed with abdominal massage followed by glycerol enema and the latter with abdominal massage followed by anus stimulation. Then the groups were compared in terms of the time for initial defecation of meconium, the volume of defecation, exhanstion time for defecation, abdominal distention and vomiting and serum bilirubin within 7 days.Result The treatment group was superior to the control one in terms of time for initial defecation of meconium, the volume of defecation, exhanstion time for defecation (P<0.05) and the incidences of abdominal distention, vomiting and serum bilirubin within 7 days were significantly lower than the control group (P<0.05).Conclusions The method of glycerol enema combined with abdominal massage is more effective for promoting defecation of neonatal meconium than the method of anus stimulation. It can reduce the incidence of abdominal distension, vomiting and pathological jaundice.

Objective To observe the effects of simplified recipe ofBuyang Huanwu Decoction on expression of APJ in the brain of local cerebral ischemia rats;To discuss its mechanism of action. MethodsFocal cerebral ischemia rat models were established by middle cerebral arterial occlusion. The adult rats were randomly divided into sham-operation group, model group,Buyang Huanwu Decoction group and simplified recipe ofBuyang Huanwu Decoction group. Administration groups were given relevant medicine for gavage. The expressions of APJ protein and APJ mRNA at different time points were detected by Western blot and RT-PCR.ResultsCompared with model group and sham-operation group, the expression of APJ protein and APJ mRNA at different time points in Buyang Huanwu Decoction group and simplified recipe ofBuyang Huanwu Decoction group significantly increased (P<0.05). The expression of APJ protein at different time points showed no difference between simplified recipe ofBuyang Huanwu Decoction group andBuyang Huanwu Decoction group;while the expression of APJ mRNA in simplified recipe ofBuyang Huanwu Decoction group was higher than Buyang Huanwu Decoction group (P<0.05).ConclusionSimplified recipe ofBuyang Huanwu Decoction plays a role in neural protection and restoration by promoting the expression of APJ in the brain of focal cerebral ischemia rats.

Microbiology 1992;0(03):-
The traditional fermentation engineering experiment requires a reform on the experimental con-tents and teaching pattern. According to the production process of industrial enzymes, we set up a two-week comprehensive experiment. The students designed and prepared the experiment by themselves. Moreover, the pattern of self-management was used in the process and the experiment scores included the self-assess-ment and objective assessment. It was proved that the new teaching pattern increased the study interesting of students, inspired their initiative and trained their spirits of team cooperation. The teaching effect was im-proved markedly and good ideas are also put forward to solve the possible problem.

Objective To study the effect of interventional treatment of iliac and femoral vein stenosis concomitant with deep venous thrombosis. Method Fifty-three patients were divided into 5 groups. In group A after placing into inferior vena cava a filter,11 patients adopted Amplatz Trombectomy Device for thrombolysis or ORSIS thrombolysis and persistent thrombolysis through popliteal vein. In group B thrombus was taken out through guiding catheter and then persistent thrombolysis through popliteal vein after placing into inferior vena cava filters in 9 cases. In group C 13 patients adopted persistent thrombolysis through femoral arteries. In group D 8 patients received persistent thrombolysis through popliteal vein. In group E persistent thrombolysis through foot veins was carried out in 12 patients. Seventeen patients received implanted stents and balloon-expansion in iliac and femoral veins. Results Symptoms disappeared in 26 patients(49.0%), significantly improved in 21 patients (39.6%), improved in 3 patients (5.7%), did not improve in 3 patients (5.7%), respectively. The repatency of iliac and femoral vein was achieved in more than 80% of the 17 patients. Complications developed in 3 cases in the course of thrombolysis. Conclusion The effect of mechanical removal of thrombus, persistent thrombolysis through catheter and transluminal angioplasty is safe and satisfactory.
