Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transitional stage between normal aging and dementia. The main characteristic of the patients with MCI is the impairment of episodic memory in which hippocampus plays an important role. Therefore, the detection of structural and functional changes of hippocampus will be the key to early diagnosis of MCI. This paper presents a brief overview of recent study about hippocampal magnetic resonance imaging of MIC.

Objective To detect the sperm apoptosis rate and level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in seminal plasma and explore their correlation among infertile males. Methods Ninety-two inferitile males were divided into varicocele (VC) group (n=32), leukocytospermia group(n=30) and the other cause group (n=30), and another 24 in vitro fertilization sperm samples were sereved as controls. The routine sperm parameters including seminal pH, sperm viability and sperm density were examined by computer assisted sperm analysis, the sperm apoptosis rate was asseseed using Annexin V/PI staining, and the ROS level in seminal plasma was detected by TBA method. The differences in seminal parameters between three infertile groups and control group were compared, and the correlation of sperm apoptosis rate with level of ROS in seminal plasma was explored in each group. Results The sperm viability of three infertile groups was significantly lower than that of control group (P<0.01). The sperm apoptosis rates and levels of ROS in seminal plasma in VC group and leukocytospermia group were significantly higher than those in control group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). The sperm apoptosis rate was positively correlated with the level of ROS in seminal plasma in leukocytospermia group(r=0. 573, P < 0.05). Conclusion The increased sperm apoptosis rate and level of seminal plasma ROS may be related to the infertility of patients with VC and leukocytospermia. The increased level of seminal plasma ROS may be one of the causes of increased sperm apoptosis rate in patients with leukocytospermia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise on genome expression in human skeletal muscle. METHODS: Six healthy sedentary elderly men aged (66+9) years were selected from military cadre retirement centers and after exercise. Testing indices included height, weight, vital capacity, step index and maximal oxygen uptake. Needle biopsies were obtained from the skeletal muscle before and after the last training. Total RNA extracted from the samples was hybridized to Affymetrix U 133A platform, the gene expression datum was analyzed.RESULTS: Aerobic exercise was shown to improve cardiorespiratory function and reduce body fat of elder subjects. It could alter the genome expression in human skeletal muscle, the number of genes that passed filtering criteria was 725. The most differently expressed genes (n=20) were investigated in this study, in which there were 3 upregulated and 17 downregulated. According to gene function annotations, the differential genes were classified into 8 categories which concerned cellular component and biological process, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) searching showed 4 genes' metabolism pathway. CONCLUSION: Systematic aerobic exercise upregulates expression of enzyme genes concerning tricarboxylic acid cycle, and downregulates expression of genes conceming muscle protein synthesis and sphingolipid. It is suggested that aerobic exercise is good to protect human nerves' integrity, exerts positive action on anti-aging and accelerate the aerobic metabolism of lipid materials in vivo.

Objective To investigate therapeutic autcomes of using telomerase inhibitors to treat cancer at the presumably most and least opportune circadian stages basing on our earlier study. Methods Twenty-four BALB/C nude mice were synchronized to a regimen of LD12:12 for 4 wk. Hepatic cancer cells (SMMC-7721) were implanted into both flanks of each mouse. Two weeks after transplantation, the hTERT-5'RZ was used to treat the hepatic cancer transplanted into the nude mice daily for two weeks, the injection times being either 9 or 21 HALO.Results The tumorinhibition ratio of mice treated at 21 HALO (65%) was statistically significantly higher than that of mice treated at 9 HALO (48%). Telomerase activity was also reduced to a greater extent in mice treated withhTERT-5'RZ at 21 than at 9 HALO, that was at the time of maximal circadian telomerase activity. Conclusion Injection of ribozyme targeted to telomerase during the tumor's DNA synthesis is associated with a betterinhibition of tumor growth and a better therapeutic outcome in hepaticcancer.
