Mutation of p53 gene is one of t.he commonest genetic changes in the development of human cancer including ovary. We intvestigated the diagnostic usefulness of the demonstration of p53 gene immunoreactivity in ovarian cancers, because immunochemical demonstration of p53 immunoreactivity is inexpensive, easily controlled and can be applied in routine pathology laboratories. p53 immunoreactivity was not identified in any patients in whom there was no morphological evidence of neoplasia. ln contrast, in contrast, in 46% of patients of ovarian cancer, p53 immunoreactivity was identified. Overexpression of gene correlated with advanced stage but did not corre1ate with grade, cell type and tumor size.

An ABO discrepancy was observed in a 19-year-old man clinically diagnosed as congenital hypogammaglobulinemia. The patient's red cell was typed as group O, and his serum had no ABO isoagglutinins. Absence of A antigen and B antigen on patient's RBC was confirmed by adsorption- elution test and saliva test. A-transferase and B-transferase activities were not demonstrated in patient's serum. Patient's serum protein electrophoresis revealed hypogammaglobulinemia pattern, and immunoglobulin levels were markedly decreased. Complete absence of B lymphocytes was observed on patient's lymphocyte subset profile. Patient's father and mother were typed as blood group O and no abnormalities were recognized in their serum protein electrophoresis patterns and immunoglobulin concentration.

PURPOSE: To report a case of secondary pigmentary glaucoma after implantable contact lens (ICL) implantation successfully treated with trabeculectomy without ICL removal. CASE SUMMARY: A 29-year-old woman presented with refractory intraocular pressure (IOP) increase in both eyes. IOP was 22 mm Hg in the right eye and 39 mm Hg in the left eye. The patient received posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens implantation in both eyes 22 months prior. Slit lamp examination revealed patent iridotomy sites in both eyes. Gonioscopy revealed open angles with 4-degree pigment deposits on the trabecular meshwork in both eyes. Ultrasound biomicroscopy examination confirmed contact between ICL and the posterior surface of the iris. In spite of well tolerated medical therapy and selective laser trabeculoplasty, IOP was 46 mm Hg in her left eye. Trabeculectomy was performed in her left eye without ICL removal. At 6 months postoperative, IOP measured 6 mm Hg without any anti-glaucoma medication and bleb was maintained in good condition in the left eye. CONCLUSIONS: The results from this case study indicate that ICL implantation can lead to secondary pigmentary glaucoma and trabeculectomy without ICL removal may help to decrease the IOP.

PURPOSE: We assessed the accuracy of urinary detection by visualization compared with a method using the urethral channel of a transurethral, three-channel urodynamic catheter. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a case series of 52 patients presenting with stress urinary incontinence over 2 years. Patients underwent video-urodynamic studies in both the supine and the erect positions by use of two techniques for measuring leak point pressure (LPP) by one examiner. LPP was determined as the intravesical pressure simultaneous to the starting point of urethral pressure changes through the urethral channel of a urodynamic catheter (LPP-ure) and then by visualization (LPP-vis) during different events. We also measured the time related to the provocations and the time to mark the leakage on the urodynamic machine by the examiner. RESULTS: The LPP-ure values (cough supine: 42.1+/-18.7, cough erect: 42.1+/-21.8, Valsalva supine: 42.2+/-23.3, Valsalva erect: 41.0+/-22.6 cmH2O) were significantly lower than the LPP-vis values (89.9+/-29.4, 97.4+/-30.4, 70.6+/-25.2, and 74.4+/-32.6 cmH2O, respectively, all p<0.001). Whereas the actual leakages happened during the pressure increases, urodynamic recording by visualization was done after those increases had finished. CONCLUSIONS: The use of visualization as a urinary detection method entails potential errors that cannot be adjusted for on that time scale. Our results emphasize the need to standardize the methodologies used for urinary leakage detection, because this measurement is closely related to the accuracy of measurement of leak point pressure.

The mechanism of apoptosis was first discovered at the end of the 19th century, but it was only recently that its importance was recognized. Not only in a pathologic environment but also in a normal environment, apoptosis has an important role in homeostasis. The number of cells is restricted by apoptosis which is controlled by several SlgBS lll VlVO. In pregnancy, the placenta regulates the maternal-fetal exchange of molecules and functions as a barrier for the protection of the fetus. As the pregnancy proceeds, changes occur in the number and components of placental cells. Observing the placental tissues, apoptosis was found in the syncytiotrophoblasts of early and late pregnancy. In particular, the fact that apoptosis observed in the placenta of late pregnancy supports the hypothesis that pmgrammed cell death is a normal sequence. Pregnancy-induced hypertension is usually accompanied by abnormal placenta and intrauterine growth restriction. In this study, using the TdT-FragEL DNA fragmentation detection kit, the changes in the nucleus by apoptosis in the placental tissues of 23 to 40 gestational weeks in preeclampsia and eclampsia were compared with normal placenta. Apoptosis was observed in the normal term placenta and in pregnancy-induced hypertension patients, regardless of whether vasculopathy was observed in Doppler ultrasound or confirmed by pathology, more apoptoses were observed aside from the number of gestational weeks.

BACKGROUND: It is regarded that contemporary Korean diet, the combination of carbohydrates-based Korean traditional diet and the Western eating patterns, increases the vulnerability to chronic diseases such as coronary vascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. Therefore, there is a rising interest in carbohydrate sources with low glycemic index; many researches have proven the medical benefits of low glycemic index diet. Barley has recently drawn attention and various benefits of barley, such as improvements of obesity and bowel function, have been suggested. It seems that the beta-glucan, a content of barley helps to lower blood sugar level. This study aimed to evaluate the advantages of barley consumption compared to wheat consumption in blood sugar and blood lipid profile levels. METHODS: Twenty-four healthy Korea University students were randomly assigned to two groups: 12 of barley bread consumption group (treatment group) and 12 of wheat bread consumption group (control group). Both groups took bread on an empty stomach and the changes of their blood sugar and lipid levels were measured, compared, and analyzed every hour for four hours. RESULTS: The blood sugar level one hour later in the barley bread consumption group was statistically low. In addition, the area under curve of the barley bread intake group was found to be statistically smaller. However, the blood lipid profiles between the two groups did not show meaningful difference. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the consumption of food containing barley could bring various medical benefits to one's health by lowering blood sugar.

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis plays a key role in the growth and metastasis of solid tumor. But it is not known whether the hematopoietic tumor depends on angiogenesis. To evaluate the prognostic roles of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and angiogenesis in patients with acute myelogenous leukemia, we analyzed the relationships between the level of VEGF expression, microvessel counts (MVC) in the bone marrow specimen of acute myelogenous leukemia patient and remission, relapse, and overall survival. METHODS: We evaluated bone marrow biopsy from 32 adult patients with newly diagnosed acute myelogenous leukemia and 16 controls with normal bone marrow. VEGF expression and MVC were assessed by immunohistochemical stain with monoclonal antibody to VEGF and polyclonal antibody to factor VIIIRAg, respectively. RESULTS: VEGF expression was higher in acute myelogenous leukemia than that of control (56.4+/-32.8% vs 19.0+/-25.9%, P=0.004). MVC was also higher in acute myelogenousleukemia than that of control (14.7+/-10.3 vs 6.2+/-3.8, P<0.001). Between high VEGF expression group and low VEGF expression group, there were no significant differences in the complete remission (CR), relapse and overall survival. There was no significant difference of MVC between CR group and non- CR group. Relapse group tends to have higher MVC than non-relapse group without statistical significance (P=0.06). There were no significant differences of MVC between hypervascular group and hypovascular group in remission, relapse and overall survival. CONCLUSION: In patients with acute myelogenous leukemia, VEGF expression and MVC were significantly higher than those of control. These findings suggest angiogenesis may play an important role in the pathogenesis of acute myelogenous leukemia. But there was no clinical correlation between the level of VEGF expression, MVC and remission, relapse and overall survival in this study. Further study willbe necessary for the establishment of prognostic role of VEGF expression and angioge-nesis and clinical efficacy of angiogenic inhibitors in acute myelogenous leukemia.
