PURPOSE: This study was aimed to compare the effect between wet gauze with cold normal saline and wet gauze with cold water on thirst, oral cavity condition, and saliva pH among postoperative patients. METHODS: This study was a quasi-experimental study with 56 participants. The experimental group received wet gauze with cold normal saline, and control group received wet gauze with cold water for three times at 15 minute intervals. Data were collected using visual analog scale for thirst, oral assessment guide for oral cavity condition and acidity tape for saliva pH. Measurement were made before applying the gauze and at 15min, 30min, and 45min after applying gauze. Data were analyzed using repeated measured ANOVA. RESULTS: Thirst, oral cavity condition, and saliva pH improved in both groups with increasing number of gauze application. Thirst for the experimental group improved more than for the control group (F=4.29, p=.009), oral cavity condition except saliva, and saliva pH were not significantly different between the groups. CONCLUSION: This study results indicated that nurses can apply wet gauze with cold normal saline to reduce thirst and saliva acidity, and to improve the oral cavity condition for postoperative patients.

Korean Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing 2018;21(2):91-99
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between the symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), sleep disturbance and depression among middle-aged women. METHODS: The study took a descriptive approach. A self-reported questionnaire was provided to women aged between 45 and 65 living in community area. The data were analyzed via SPSS program (version 25). RESULTS: 47.8% of the respondents showed moderate to severe RLS symptoms and the severity of RLS symptoms was 10.72. Depression score was 13.12 and sleep disturbance score was 4.97. There was a significant correlation between RLS symptoms and sleep disturbance (r=.423, p < .001), and RLS symptoms had a positive impact on sleep disturbance. There was also a significant correlation between RLS symptoms and depression (r=.494, p < .001) and RLS symptoms also had a positive impact on depression. CONCLUSION: Women with RLS symptoms had more severe sleep disturbance, depression and vasomotor syndrome than those without RLS symptoms. If RLS symptoms among middle-aged women is simply diagnosed as a menopausal symptom, this misdiagnosis can lead to sleep disorder and depression. Therefore, further empirical researches should be done to estimate the prevalence of RLS symptoms and to launch a program to detect RLS at the early stage.

Korean Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing 2019;22(2):77-86
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between the symptom of restless legs syndrome (RLS), somatic symptom, depression, and activities of daily living (ADL) among the elderly.
METHODS:
A descriptive approach was taken in this study. Data were collected from May 23 to July 5, 2019 and 140 elderly people replied to the questionnaire. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and χ² test.
RESULTS:
48.6% of the respondents had RLS symptom and the severity of RLS symptom was 9.57±11.55. RLS symptom had a positive correlation with depression (r=.538, p<.001), with somatic symptom (r=.528, p<.001), with ADL (r=.308, p<.001), and with IADL (r=.360, p<.001). Depression had the most significant correlation with RLS symptoms. There were significant differences in depression, somatization, ADL, and IADL according to the RLS severity.
CONCLUSION
The results of this study showed that many elders experienced mild to severe RLS symptom. Also, the elderly with RLS symptom had more severe depression, somatic symptom, ADL, and IADL than those without RLS symptom in this study. Depression, somatic symptom, and ADL could be deteriorated if the RLS symptom is not diagnosed early.

To investigate the imbalance of the cytokine production profile of T cells from atopic asthmatics, we measured concentrations of IL-4, IL-5 and IFN-y by ELISA method in the culture supernatants of peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMCs) and Derrnato-phagoides pteronyssinus(Der p) J-stimulated PBMCs from Der p-sensitized atopic asthmatics, Der p-sensitized healthy atopits, non-atopic asthmatics and healthy non-atopics. The suppressive effect of IFN-y on cytokine production of Der p J-stimulated PBMCs was also examined. The PBMCs from atopics showed higher IL-4 and IL-5 production in response to PHA +TPA and higher IFN-gamma production in response to Der p Jq compared with non-atopits. The Der p J-stimulated PBMCs from atopics showed a tendency of increased IL-5 production in response to Der p J and higher IL-4 and IL-5 production in response to PHA+TPA compared with non-atopics. IL-5 production of Der p J-stimulated PBMCs from atopics was suppressed by IFN It is suggested that an imbalance in IL-4, IL-5 and IFN-y production is a feature of the atopic state. The TH2 characteristics of allergen-stimulated PBMCs could be regulated by IFN-y.

Korean Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing 2018;21(2):110-120
PURPOSE: This study was to explore the level of core nursing activities performed by long-term care hospital nurses and to investigate the frequency and educational needs of major nursing activities. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive research design was used. The subjects were 155 nurses working at seven long-term care hospitals in Korea. Data were collected in 2018 from September 15 to October 16 using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the SPSS program. RESULTS: The mean age of nurses was 45.19±10.99 years and the mean career of long-term care hospital was 49.84±40.52 months. Monitoring activity was shown as the highest score in the performance level and frequency, whereas infection control received the highest score in educational needs. A scatter plot revealed that physical examination, respiratory care, wound care, communication and education showed overall high scores in the performance level, frequency, and educational needs. Emergency care and infection control were the activities that were performed less frequently but had high performance level and educational needs. CONCLUSION: It is important to establish rules for requisite and delegable activities considering the performance level and frequency of nursing activities in long-term care hospitals in order to improve the quality of patient care.

The syndromes of left atrial isomerism and right atrial isomerism, called polysplenia and asplenia syndromes, respectively, consist of congenital heart defects with disturbances in normal left right isometry, and the etiology of atrial isomerism remains unclear. Right atrial isomerism is traditionally associated with severe cardiac defects, especially complete atrioventricular septal defect, transposition of great arteries, pulmonary atresia, and total anomalous pulmonary venous return. Recently, we encountered one case of asplenia diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonography. We report a case with brief review of the literatures.

Korean Journal of Clinical Pathology 1998;18(4):645-649
BACKGROUND: CMV Antigenemia (CMV-Ag) assay and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have been introduced as exponents of a new generation of tests for the detection of CMV infection. So we compared Roche Amplicor test with CMV-Ag assay to evaluate their clinical usefulness. METHODS: CMV-Ag assay using CMV-vueTM kit (INCSTAR Co., U.S.A.) detects pp65 antigen in leukocytes by immunoperoxidase detection system (positive; stained nucleus > OR =1). Amplicor CMV test (Roche Diagnostic Systems, Inc., Branching, NJ, USA) using plasma or serum is based on PCR amplification of target DNA using CMV specific biotinylated primer and hybridization of the amplified products to the probe and subsequent colorimetric detection of amplified DNA. RESULTS: Of the bone marrow transplanted 73 cases, eleven cases showed discrepancy between the two methods. Of these 10 cases those showed positive results only by Amplicor CMV test, 9 cases turned out to be true positive by the follow-up test and clinical manifestation. And the remaining one case was thought to be false positive. One case which showed positive result only by CMV-Ag assay was proved to be true positive. Consequently, CMV-Ag assay had sensitivity of 73.5% and specificity of 100%, Amplicor CMV test had 97.1% and 97.4%, respectively. Amplicor CMV test detected CMV DNA average 16.3 days before the onset of clinical manifestation and sustained until 10 days after symptoms disappearance, otherwise CMV-Ag assay detected mean 3.8 days earlier and sustained 4.2 days after. CONCLUSIONS: Amplicor CMV test is more sensitive, rapid and longer sustained method than CMV-Ag assay but it lacks quantitation.
