PURPOSE: This study was performed to verify the effect of Tai Chi exercise on patients with rheumatoid arthritis particularly their level of pain, fatigue, sense of balance and daily life performance (ADL). METHOD: It employed a non-equivalent control group pre- and post-test design. The research instruments used in this study were pain, fatigue, sense of balance and ADL. Thirty-two patients in the experimental group carried out 50 minutes of Tai Chi exercise for 12 weeks, and 29 patients in the control group did not. Before and after the experiment, both groups were tested for pain, fatigue, sense of balance and ADL. Collected data were processed using the SPSS/WIN 10.0 program analyzed by the frequency, percentage, X2-test, and t-test. RESULTS: Pain and fatigue significantly decreased in the experimental group. However the improvement in ADL of the rheumatoid arthritis patients was not statistically significant but their sense of balance was enhanced significantly. CONCLUSION: Tai Chi exercise is an effective nursing intervention that can be used for rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Bilateral segmental neurofibromatosis is a rare disease characterized by bilateral neurofibromas, with or without pigmented lesion, or unilateral neurofibromas with contralateral pigmented lesion, limited to a body segment. Partial unilateral lentiginosis is characterized by numerous lentigines localized to a body segment, often corresponding to one or more dermatome. Bilateral segmental neurofibromatosis combined with partial unilateral lentiginosis is very rare, and to our knowledge, only 2 cases have been reported in English literature. We herein report another case of bilateral segmental neurofibromatosis with partial unilateral lentiginosis in a 46-year-old woman.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the rehabilitation nursing services what nurses recognize to be important and what they do in practice of the industrial workers. METHOD: The subjects were 150 nurses who were working at the industrial hospital. The questionnaire was made up with 43 items about the perception on importance and performance of rehabilitation services. RESULT: The highest services in the perception on importance and performance subscale were physical and therapeutic services. The highest difference between perception on importance and performance was the social and occupational services. The perception on importance of rehabilitation services had positive correlation with performance. The group take care of general patients had a higher level of perception on importance than the other group, and level of performance had significant difference with age and position. CONCLUSION: We need to develop the strategy for promoting the performance of services that recognize it will be important services, but not to do. Further study on system for promoting the nurse practitioner who responsible for rehabilitation nursing.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore the significant factors that influence quality of life in elderly patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS: A total of 107 patients with colorectal cancer completed the self-reported MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI-GI), Patient Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), self-care, and Functional Assesment of Illness Therapy-Colorectal (FACT-C). RESULTS: The mean scores were 87.20±19.84 for QOL, 2.80±2.25 for symptom experience, 6.84±0.58 for nutritional status, and 3.81±0.62 for self-care. The highest score was emotional well-being whereas the lowest score was social/family well-being. Factors affecting quality of life were analyzed by hierarchical multiple regression. As a result, self-care (β=.36, p<.001), symptom experience (β=-.34, p<.001), and nutritional status (β=-.25, p=.001) were identified as factors affecting quality of life. The explanation power of this regression model was 52.0% and it was statistically significant (F=23.55, p<.001). CONCLUSION: The quality of life can be improved by evaluating the comprehensive symptoms experienced by the elderly patients after colorectal cancer treatment, helping self-care, and maintaining proper nutritional status.

BACKGROUND: Acne is principally a disorder of adolescence. However, a number of observational studies have documented a significant degree of acne in adult women. One study found a difference in women between late-onset acne and acne that persisted from adolescence. There were significant higher sebum excretion rates among women whose acne originated during the teenage years compared with late-onset acne groups. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical features of patients with acne and to compare the sebum excretion rates and the density of P acnes in adult acne with that in adolescent acne. METHODS: Thirty nine patients with acne vulgaris were clinically evaluated. Sebum secretion rates were evaluated by Sebutape method. The density of P acnes counted by scrub method. RESULTS: 1. The severity grades were mild to moderate in adult acne groups, consisting with the lower acne lesion counts than that of adolescent acne groups. 2. Sebum secretion rates by Sebutape(R) method showed different patterns in two groups. The mean value in the adult acne groups was lower than that in adolescent acne groups, but not statistically significant. Chin area dominant pattern, shown in adult acne groups, were not apparent in adolescent acne groups. 3. The density of P acnes was a lower mean value in the adult acne groups, but not statistically significant. Only in adolescent acne groups, the severity grades are well correlated to the density of P acnes. CONCLUSION: Adult acne was mild to moderate in severity. Clinically, adult acne differs from adolescent acne in that the lesions are located most commonly around the chin. Sebum excretion rate was the highest in the chin area of patients with adult acne. But there was no significant difference in two groups. Also the density of P acnes was not significantly different in two groups.

Lymphangioma is known to be one of the unusual disorders. It involes every area of skin but the scrotum is very rare site. We report a case of cavernons lymphangioma in a 19-year-old man, who complained of multiple ves icle-like papules, serous fluid leakage and swelling of the scrotum for 2 years. Histopathologic findings showed large, irregularly shaped cystic speces lined by a single layer of endothelium in the subcutaneous tissue and between the muscle bundles, These clinical and histopathilogical findings are thought to fit in cavernous lymphangioma of the scrotum.

BACKGROUND: The polymerase chain reaction(PCR) assay is rapid, sensitive analytical technique but has problem of high false-positive rate. We applied dUTP-UDG PCR (dU-PCR) method to prevent carryover contamination major source of high false positive in PCR assays, for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. METHODS: The PCRs for detection of M. tuberculosis were performed with P1 and P2 primers based on IS6110 repeated sequence. FTC-2000 was used for capillary PCR and Uno-Thermoblock was used for heating block PCR. In order to evaluate the effect of dU-PCR controlling carryover contamination, PCRs were performed in the presence of UDG and the absence of UDG. To compare the sensitivity of usual dT-PCR with dU-PCR, chromosomal DNA of M. tuberculosis ranging 500pg to 0.5fg were amplified by dT-PCR and dU-PCR method using two different thermocycler, capillary and heating block type, respectively. RESULT: The dU-PCR using UDG prevented carryover contamination by amplicon DNA up to 500pg. By capillay PCR method, the lower limits of detectability of dT-PCR and dU-PCR were 0.5fg and 500fg, respectively, which indicates the sensitivity of dU-PCR was lower than dT-PCR. But by heating block method, the lower limits of detectability of both method of dU and dT-PCR were 0.5fg. So the sensitivity of dU-PCR was same as dT-PCR. CONCLUSION: The dU-PCR by heating-block method was sensitive test for detection of M. tuberculosis that effectively prevent carryover contamination by amplicon.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine characteristics of nursing science and identify expected outcomes from baccalaureate graduates, and to develop accreditation standards and criteria reflecting the characteristics of the nursing profession. METHODS: A methodological research design was utilized in this study. Related literature reviews and the nursing education program goals and objectives of the 99 nursing schools in Korea were analyzed. A cross-sectional survey research design was utilized to test the validity of the developed characteristics of the nursing profession and their accreditation criteria and standards. The face validity was from the advisory committee and public committee hearing. RESULTS: The characteristics of nursing science were defined with five concepts including humanity, scientific knowledge, professionalism, therapeutic relationship, and facilitating well-being. The expected outcomes from graduates were identified as providing holistic nursing, critical thinking, establishing professionalism and leadership, construction of a therapeutic relationship, and skilled nursing practice. Finally6 standards and 14 criteria reflecting the unique characteristics of the nursing profession were developed for accreditation. These proposed accreditation standards and criteria are a challenge to promote the quality of nursing science.
