1.Brief History of Standardization of Korean Terminology in the Field of Pathology.

An in other medical fields in Korea, the terminology in pathology has to go through a long adaptation period since the liberation from Japan in 1945. The Korean Society of Pathologists (KSP) has been the driving force in establishing and adopting new pathology terms in Korean. This effort started from the time when the KSP launched the Korean Journal of Pathology in 1965, and was activated by the momentum of publishing its pathology textbook for the medical students first in Korea in 1990. The KSP organized the Terminology Standardization Committee in close collaboration with the Termonology Standardization Committee of the Korean Medical Association (KMA). The product of joint works was the third edition of Korean Medical Termonology Dictionary published by the KMA in 1992. Since then, the Termonology Standardization Committee of the KSP has continued to improve many inappropriate terms into more easily understandable ones based on the guideline. The guideline of the KSP is basically same to that proposed and adopted by the KMA. Pathology terms are expected to improve further to be standardized as the Pathology Textbook Committee of the KSP is in process of publishing the 5th edition. In the future, the KSP should be ready to establish and standardize the medical terminology in the pathology field since so many new vocabularies are coming into use in this rapidly changing medical environment.

2.Pineal Anlage Tumor: A case report.

The term "pineal anlage tumor" has been recently proposed and few cases have been reported. We report the first Korean case of pineal anlage tumor in a 6-year-old girl who complained of headache and vomiting for 2 months. Brain MRI revealed a well defined, lobulated, calcifying mass in the pineal region. Tumor was totally removed. Pathological examination revealed a primitive pineal parenchymal tumor with melanotic epithelial component that was similar to histologic findings of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy, so-called retinal anlage tumor and of the developing pineal gland. The tumor was composed mostly of small, undifferentiated cells, Flexner-Wintersteiner rosettes, and ganglionic differentiation. The tumor also contained the cartilage and skeletal muscle cells.

3.p53 Expression and Ki-67 Labeling Index in Brain Tumor with Special Reference to Tumor and Histologic Grade.

Mutation in the p53 suppressor gene is the most common genetic alteration found in human cancers including primary brain tumors. Ki-67 labeling index(LI) is known to be a marker of proliferating activity. The purpose of this study was to verify whether an immunohistochemical expression of p53 antibody and Ki-67 LI could be related to different clinicopathologic parameters including histologic grade, size, invasiveness and recurrence of the brain tumors. Materials were based on the 147 surgically resected brain tumors during the last two years. Of the 147 brain tumors, there were 35 astrocytic tumors, 35 meningiomas, 10 oligodendrogliomas, 7 craniopharyngiomas, 5 dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors, 4 medulloblastomas, 5 ependymomas, 23 pituitary adenomas, 9 schwannomas, and 14 other brain tumors. The p53 expression and Ki-67 LI were higher in malignant brain tumors including astrocytic tumors, medulloblastoma, PNET and gliosarcoma. The p53 positivity was correlated with histologic grades and tumor recurrence. The brain tumors with a high Ki-67 LI(>6%) also showed a close relationship to a higher histologic grading, radiological invasiveness and recurrence. There was no evident correlation with the age and tumor size with p53 expression and Ki-67 LI. These results suggest that p53 overexpression and high proliferation potential of the tumor cells are associated with the higher histologic grade and aggressive clinical course in the central nervous system tumors.

4.Intraosseous Well Differentiated Osteosarcoma: A case report.

Well differentiated osteosarcomas are variants of osteosarcoma composed mainly of fibrous and osseous tissue with minimal cystologic atypia. This tumor may be misinterpretated as a benign lesion if the radiologic and clinical features are not taken into account. We report a typical case of intraosseous well differentiated osteosarcoma occuring in the left distal femur of a 58-year-old woman. Radiologically, it appered as an ill-defined lesion with a mixture of sclerotic and osteolytic ares. But there was a lack of highly destructive appearance of conventional osteosarcoma. Grossly, the mass occupied a metaphysis of the distal femur with extension into the diaphysis and epiphysis. Multifocal cortical destruction and sclerosis were also associated. Histologically, the mass showed typical features of intraosseous well differentiated osteosarcoma. There were various patterns of osteoid deposits and bone formation mimicking those of fibrous dysplasia, nonossifying fibroma or parosteal osteosarcoma.

5.The effect of fermented foods on the color and hardness change of denture base acrylic resins.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: For a long time, many of denture base acrylic resins have been used for edentulous and partial edentulous patients because of easy manipulation and good mechanical properties, but its esthetic aspect has not been commented enough. Denture base acrylic resins also has caused esthetic problems due to discoloration or staining as in esthetic restoration. Many researches and reports have treated the problems and accomplished esthetic improvement. But these researches and reports dealt with general food colors or beverages, not with fermented foods. PURPOSE: This study is designed to assess what fermented foods, such as soy sauce, gochujang, and toenjang that many of Koreans have taken in, influence on the color and hardness variation of denture base acrylic resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the procedure, twelve disks per 4 denture base acrylic resins were fabricated with a thickness of 2mm and 16mm in diameter. Each seven specimen were measured for discoloration with spectrophotometer, while the others, five specimen, for surface hardness change with Barcol hardness tester, over time. Each 12 specimen were immersed into the 4 beakers of fermented foods(soy sauces, gochujangs, toenjangs, deionized water), and L*, a*, and b* values were measured for the color difference(_E*), on the 1st, 7th, and 28th day with spectrophotometer, with the measurement of surface hardness change. Each data observed was processed statistically. RESULTS: The findings are as follows; Discoloration 1. All of denture base resins was not influenced by the kind of fermented foods, except for QC20. 2. Soy sauce and red pepper paste caused more change for denture base resins than deionized water and soy bean paste, except for Perform. 3. Most significant change was shown in Lucitone199., whereas Perform. results in the least change for all immersed solution, with no statistical significance. Hardness change 1. Barcol hardness values in deposited specimens have been changed low degree, but with significant statistical change according to the kind of food and duration. 2. Lucitone199. has significantly lower Barcol hardness value than others do. CONCLUSION: Based on the above results, it suggests that the habitual intake of fermented foods is not helpful for the color stability of denture base acrylic resins because Soy sauce and red pepper paste mainly caused discoloration and surface hardness change. Particularly Lucitone199. shows specific discoloration and low surface hardness values. Therefore, it is recommended giving caution patients with denture of Lucitone199. especially against the habitual intake of fermented foods like soy sauce and red pepper paste.

6.A Study on the Self-Management and Physiological Measurements of Patients on Hemodialysis according to Their Age

PURPOSE: The study was conducted to investigate correlations between self-management and physiological measurements of patients on hemodialysis according to their age. METHODS: The subjects were 120 patients on hemodialysis at three hospitals in S and G cities. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and medical records. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation analysis with the SPSS 23.0 program. RESULTS: The levels of compliance with self-management were highest in the middle-aged group. There was no significant difference in physiological measurements between the different age groups. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that nurses should consider characteristics of different age groups to improve the levels of self-management and physiological measurements.

7.Bonding of conventional provisional resin to 3D printed resin: the role of surface treatments and type of repair resins

PURPOSE:
This study evaluated the shear bond strength between 3D printed provisional resin and conventional provisional resin depending on type of conventional provisional resin and different surface treatments of 3D printed resin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
Ninety-six disc-shaped specimens (Ø14 mm × 20 mm thickness) were printed with resin for 3D printing (Nextdent C&B, Vertex-Dental B. V., Soesterberg, Netherlands). After postprocessing, the specimens were randomly divided into 8 groups (n=12) according to two types of conventional repair resin (methylmethacrylate and bis-acryl composite) and four different surface treatments: no additional treatment, air abrasion, soaking in methylmethacrylate (MMA) monomer, and soaking in MMA monomer after air abrasion. After surface treatment, each repair resin was bonded in cylindrical shape using a silicone mold. Specimens were stored in 37°C distilled water for 24 hours. The shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Failure modes were analyzed by scanning electron microscope. Statistical analysis was done using one-way ANOVA test and Kruskal-Wallis test (α=.05).
RESULTS:
The group repaired with bis-acryl composite without additional surface treatment showed the highest mean shear bond strength. It was significantly higher than all four groups repaired with methylmethacrylate (P<.05). Additional surface treatments, neither mechanical nor chemical, increased the shear bond strength within methylmethacrylate groups and bis-acryl composite groups (P>.05). Failure mode analysis showed that cohesive failure was most frequent in both methylmethacrylate and bis-acryl composite groups.
CONCLUSION
Our results suggest that when repairing 3D printed provisional restoration with conventional provisional resin, repair with bis-acryl composite without additional surface treatment is recommended.

But when pathologic changes, such as loss of occlusal vertical dimension, masticatory pain, loss of masticatory function, and loss of esthetics occur, restorative measures should be taken by dentist. A patient visited the clinic with the chief complaint of ‘My lower teeth bite the palate and it hurts’. It was diagnosed as iatrogenic attrition of lower natural dentition caused by inappropriate upper restorations, resulting in traumatic overbite. Through model analysis and diagnostic wax up, increase in vertical dimension was decided. Upper and lower dentitions were restored with new prostheses. After restoration, satisfactory outcomes were achieved both in functional and esthetic aspects

10.Effects of the Level of PaCO2 on Recovery of Energy Metabolism: Is Normocarbia or Hypocarbia Better for Ischemia-Reperfused Cat Brain?.

BACKGROUND: The effect of arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) during ischemia and reperfusion has been a controversial issue. In this study, the effect of PaCO2 during ischemia and reperfusion was evaluated by 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). METHODS: Incomplete global cerebral ischemia was induced by ligation of carotid artery under lowered mean blood pressure (mean blood pressure= 40 mmHg) for 30 minutes followed by 2 hours of reperfusion. Eighteen cats were divided into 3 groups: For group 1 (n=6) (control group), animals were subjected to normocarbia (PaCO2=28~33 mmHg) during ischemia and reperfusion, for group 2 (n=6), animals were subjected to hypocarbia (PaCO2=18~23 mmHg) during ischemia and reperfusion, and for group 3 (n=6), animals were subjected to normocarbia during ischemia and hypocarbia during reperfusion. RESULTS: For group 1, the energy metabolism measured by [PCr/Pi] was recovered about 74.7 6.4%. For group 2, the energy metabolism failed to be completely recovered by 120 minutes of reperfusion (69.3 7.3%), whereas for group 3, the energy matabolism was completely recovered by 120 minutes of reperfusion (97.6 2.4%). There were statistically significant differences between group 1 and group 3 (p<0.05). The changes in pH were not significantly different among the groups. CONCLUSION: In this study, a condition of hypocarbia during reperfusion seems better for the energy metabolism after incomplete global ischemia of cats.
