1.Investigation into Korean School Milk Program Management and Dietitians' Perception of School Milk Program Improvement.

This study was aimed to investigate management conditions and dietitians' perception for improvement of school milk programs. Using an online sampling method, collected data from 1,723 dietitians nationwide were analyzed. The results show that 44.4% of respondents carried out the cyclic school milk program, providing various types of dairy products either weekly or monthly. Further, 80.3% of respondents answered that preference survey results were a determining factor in their choice of school milk provider, and 55.9% said that a school steering committee made the decision on relevant facts of the school milk program. For diversification of school milk type, 60.5% of respondents wanted to maintain the current system, and 39.5% answered that milk type needed to be diversified. The respondents preferred fermented milk products, functional milk, and processed milk, in order, if school milk type is diversified. To improve perception and knowledge about milk, 66.0% of respondents thought that nutrition education by a nutrition teacher would be the most effective, and parent's letters or a nutrition newsletter would be helpful. More than half of respondents (55.0%) disagreed with a merged program for school foodservice and milk.

2.Relationship between Functional Fitness and Break Response in Elderly Drivers: Comparison with Young Driver.

PURPOSE: This study compared the functional fitness and brake response of elderly and young drivers to confirm the correlation between the functional fitness and brake response. METHODS: This study was a cross sectional observational design. Older drivers (>65age, n=21) and young adult drivers (20–40aged, n=20) were enrolled as subjects. The functional fitness of the subjects was measured using a senior fitness test consisting of a back scratch (BS), chair sit and reach (CSR), arm curl (AC), chair stand up (CSU), foot up and go (8-FUG), and 2-minute step (2-MS). The brake response used the virtual driving simulator to measure the brake reaction time (BRT) and braking distance (BD) according to the pedestrian protection and traffic signal compliance. RESULTS: The older drivers had a lower BS (p < 0.000), CSU (p=0.040), and 8-FUG (p=0.011) than the young adult drivers. BS and 8-FUG showed a significant positive correlation with the BRT and BD of pedestrian protection and traffic signal compliance. CSU showed a significant negative correlation with the BRT of pedestrian protection and traffic signal compliance. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the flexibility of the upper extremity, lower extremity strength, and agility are strongly correlated with the driving performance of elderly drivers.

3.Diagnostic Neuroimaging in Headache Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

OBJECTIVE: Neuroimaging in headache patients identifies clinically significant neurological abnormalities and plays an important role in excluding secondary headache diagnoses. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the existing guidelines and studies surrounding neuroimaging in headache patients. METHODS: The research question involved determining the prevalence of detecting clinically significant neurological abnormalities using neuroimaging in patients suspected of primary headache. Searches of the PubMed and Embase databases were conducted on English-language studies published from 1991 to 2016, and the reference lists of the retrieved articles were also checked manually. All headache subtypes and patients aged ≥15 years were included in the analysis. RESULTS: Ten studies met the selection criteria. The pooled prevalence of detecting clinically significant abnormalities in the neuroimaging of headache patients was 8.86% (95% confidence interval: 5.12–15.33%). Subsequently, diverse subgroup analyses were performed based on the detection method, headache type, study type, study region, age group, and disease type. CONCLUSION: The present findings indicate that limited neuroimaging methods should be carefully considered for headache diagnostic purposes when there are red flag symptoms. Limitations and suggested directions for future studies on neuroimaging in headache patients are described.

4.Potential Role of Immunodiagnosis for Pulmonary Tuberculosis Using Induced Sputum Cells.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic utility and predictors for determinate results of an enzyme-linked immunospot assay using induced sputum cells (IS ELISPOT) for a rapid diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects suspected of pulmonary TB who had either sputum acid fast bacilli smear-negative or not producing sputum spontaneously were prospectively enrolled. ELISPOT assay was performed using cells from induced sputum. RESULTS: A total of 43 subjects, including 25 with TB (TB group) and 18 with non-TB disease (non-TB group) were enrolled. Results of IS ELISPOT were determinate in only 17/43 (39%) subjects, but all of determinate results were consistent with the final diagnosis. Of the 43 sputum samples, 11 (26%) were inadequate to perform IS ELISPOT. Of 32 adequate sputum samples, the proportion of determinate results was significantly higher in the TB group (75%, 15/20) than in the non-TB group (17%, 2/12) (p=0.002). The status of active TB was a unique predictor but smear positivity was not a significant predictor for determinate results. In addition, sensitivity of IS ELISPOT (75%, 9/12) in smear negative TB was higher than that of TB-polymerase chain reaction (25%, 3/12). CONCLUSION: IS ELISPOT showed relatively high diagnostic value and accuracy in the TB group, independent of smear positivity. IS ELISPOT may provide additional diagnostic yield for microbiological tools in the rapid diagnosis of smear-negative TB.

5.Effects of Slow Programmable Cryopreservation on Preserving Viability of the Cultured Periodontal Ligament Cells from Human Impacted Third Molar.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to determine cell viability and differentiation capability of human periodontal ligament (PDL) cells and to elucidate the effects of cryopreservation on the activity of human third molar PDL cells by comparing PDL cells with and without cryopreservation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Human PDL fibroblasts obtained from immature third molars were cultured and divided into two groups. The experimental group was cryopreserved with a slow freezing rate of 0.5degrees C/min from 4degrees C to -35degrees C followed by plunging in liquid nitrogen at -196degrees C and cultured after fast thawing. The control group was cultured without cryopreservation. Cell viability, growth capacity and morphology were evaluated in both groups. Bivariate statistics were used to compare 2 groups and linear mixed model analysis was used to investigate the growth trends difference over time. RESULT: Cell viability and growth capacity were not significantly different between the 2 groups (P>0.05). Cultured cell of both groups showed fibroblast-like in appearance, and there were no significant differences in morphology between 2 groups. The mixed model analysis revealed no significant difference of growth capacity between 2 groups over time (beta=-0.0009; P=0.138). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that cryopreservation under control does not affect the biological properties of PDL cells, supporting the feasibility of autotransplantation of cryopreserved impacted third molars.

6.The Association between Vitamin D and Health-Related Quality of Life in Korean Adults.

BACKGROUND: We examined the relationship between vitamin D status and health-related quality of life, and explored other related factors in the general Korean population. METHODS: We used data from the 2007-2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey on 14,104 adults, aged 20-49 years, who had consented to serum vitamin D measurement and answered health-related quality of life questions. EuroQol-5 was used for measurement. Serum vitamin D levels were measured at intervals of 0-9.99, 10-19.99, 20-29.99, and ≥30 ng/mL. RESULTS: Participants with higher serum vitamin D (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D) levels were significantly less likely to report problems with depression and anxiety. After adjustment for age, gender, income level, education level, marital status, alcohol consumption, smoking status, and the existence of depressive disorders, the odds ratio for reporting a problem with depression and anxiety was 0.60 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.39-0.91). The odds ratio for the prevalence of any problem was 0.69 (95% CI, 0.53-0.89) before adjustment, but was not statistically significant after adjustment. No significant associations were observed for problems with mobility, self-care, usual activity, or pain and discomfort. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to examine the associations between vitamin D and health-related quality of life for the general Korean population. Vitamin D status was not significantly associated with the dimensions of EuroQol-5 except for depression and anxiety problems.

10.The autophagy Protein Atg5 Plays a Crucial Role in the Maintenance and Reconstitution Ability of Hematopoietic Stem Cells

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in bone marrow are pluripotent cells that can constitute the hematopoiesis system through self-renewal and differentiation into immune cells and red blood cells. To ensure a competent hematopoietic system for life, the maintenance of HSCs is tightly regulated. Although autophagy, a self-degradation pathway for cell homeostasis, is essential for hematopoiesis, the role of autophagy key protein Atg5 in HSCs has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we found that Atg5 deficiency in hematopoietic cells causes survival defects, resulting in severe lymphopenia and anemia in mice. In addition, the absolute numbers of HSCs and multiple-lineage progenitor cells were significantly decreased, and abnormal erythroid development resulted in reduced erythrocytes in blood of Vav_Atg5(−/−) mice. The proliferation of Lin⁻Sca-1⁺c-Kit⁺ HSCs was aberrant in bone marrow of Vav_Atg5(−/−) mice, and mature progenitors and terminally differentiated cells were also significantly altered. Furthermore, the reconstitution ability of HSCs in bone marrow chimeric mice was significantly decreased in the presence of Atg5 deficiency in HSCs. Mechanistically, impairment of autophagy-mediated clearance of damaged mitochondria was the underlying cause of the HSC functional defects. Taken together, these results define the crucial role of Atg5 in the maintenance and the reconstitution ability of HSCs.
