Journal of Dental Hygiene Science 2020;20(4):245-251
Background:
This study tries to compare and analyze the removal effect of dental plaque of general dentifrice and pregnant women’s dentifrice and quantify the results to provide basic data so that consumers can make reasonable choices when purchasing dentifrice, and also increase interest in the dental plaque.
Methods:
After forming a dental plaque (carbohydrate porridge) on the labial surface of the bovine teeth, a disclosing agent was applied. Then the same experimenter brushed the surface of the bovine teeth using an electric toothbrush and took photographs using a DSLR camera. Thereafter, the residual amount of dental plaque was analyzed using the ImageJ program, and SPSS 26.0 was used for statistical processing.
Results:
The average residual amount of dental plaque using the general dentifrice was 11.71% for Perio, 9.45% for Cliden, and 8.47% for 2080, and the average residual amount for the three types was approximately 9.88%. The average residual amount of dental plaque of pregnant women’s dentifrice was 13.95% for Jeninmothers, 12.53% for Tntnmoms, and 12.63% for Mommiracle, and the average residual amount of the three types was approximately 13.04%. On comparing the average residual amount of dental plaque between general and pregnant women’s dentifrices, it was observed to be 3.16% higher for the latter. However, the results were not statistically significant.
Conclusion
According to the research results, there was no significant difference in removal effects of general dentifrice and pregnant women’s dentifrice. In addition, when a pregnant woman uses the right toothbrushing method with pregnant women’s dentifrice, it can prevent or inhibit the progression of the gestational periodontal disease. Therefore, we recommend pregnant women to use pregnant women’s dentifrices.

Journal of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine 2000;21(7):893-900
BACKGROUND: Means to measure death anxiety, death depression and sense of symbolic immortality with approved validity and reliability does not yet exist in Korea. METHODS: Existing English questionnaires such as Templer Death Anxiety Scale (TDAS), Death Depression Scale (DDS), Sense of Symbolic Immortaligy Scale (SSIS) were translated into Korean by 5 translators, and then reviewed by 3 non-participants of translation for collegial summary and this summary was counter-translated again by another 2 non-participants. Another 3 non-participants of translation and counter-translation were chosen to examine the two sentences of each item. Then reexamination was done by retranslating and counter-translating the parts with errors. Aftr pretest on ordinary people. the completed questionnaires were given to medical students, residents and nurses of a university hospital. Pastors and missionaries were selected as comparison group. RESULTS: Kuder-Richardson or Cronbach-alpha that represent internal consistency of TDAS, DDS and SSIs was 0.69, 0.84 and 0.78. The three sentences that lowered internal consistency of SSIS was deleted. BDI and DDS showed a positive correlation (0.32, P=0.02), suggesting proved construct validity. Correlation coefficient that proves construct validity of TDAS and DDS was 0.54 (P<0.01), of SSIS and TDAS -0.23(P=0.04), of SSIS and DDS -0.29(P=0.01). The TDAS and DDS(P<0.01), DDS and BDI(P=0.02) have shown a positive correlation were shown. There was significant difference in the score of SSIS(P<0.01). The same results in cases where the 3 sentences was deleted. CONCLUSION: Korean versions of TDAS, DDS and SSIS were reliable and valid.

BACKGROUND: Interleukin-7 receptor (IL-7R) alpha-deficient mice have small numbers of B cells and alpha beta T cells in periphery, they totally lack gamma sigma T cells. In addition, the V-J recombination and transcription of TCRgamma genes is also severely impaired in IL-7Ralpha-deficient mice. Stat5, a signaling molecule of the IL-7R, induces germline transcription in the TCRgamma locus, and promotes V-J recombination and gamma sigma T cell development. However, the roles for IL-7R signaling pathway in thymic or extrathymic gamma sigma T cell development are largely unknown. METHODS: To clarify the role of the IL-7 receptor in proliferation and survival of gamma sigma T cells, we introduced the TCR gamma sigma transgene, Vgamma2/ Vsigma5, into IL-7Ralpha-deficient mice, and investigated the development of gamma sigma T cells. RESULTS: We found that Vgamma2/Vsigma5 transgene restored gamma sigma T cells in the epithelium of the small intestine (IEL) but not in the thymus and the spleen. Further addition of a bcl-2 transgene resulted in partial recovery of gamma sigma T cells in the thymus and the spleen of these mice. CONCLUSION: Taken together, this study revealed that the IL-7Ralpha is indispensable for proliferation and survival mainly in thymic gamma sigma T cell development.

Journal of Breast Cancer 2017;20(3):264-269
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological characteristics of pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) in comparison with non-pregnancy associated breast cancer (non-PABC). METHODS: A total of 344 eligible patients with PABC were identified in the Korean Breast Cancer Society Registry database. PABC was defined as ductal carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, or invasive lobular carcinoma diagnosed during pregnancy or within 1 year after the birth of a child. Patients with non-PABC were selected from the same database using a 1:2 matching method. The matching variables were operation, age, and initial stage. RESULTS: Patients with PABC had significantly lower survival rates than patient with non-PABC (10-year survival rate: PABC, 76.4%; non-PABC, 85.1%; p=0.011). PABC patients had higher histologic grade and were more frequently hormone receptor negative than non-PABC patients. Being overweight (body mass index [BMI], ≥23 kg/m²), early menarche (≤13 years), late age at first childbirth (≥30 years), and a family history of breast cancer were more common in the PABC group than in the non-PABC group. Multivariate analysis showed the following factors to be significantly associated with PABC (vs. non-PABC): early menarche (odds ratio [OR], 2.165; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.566–2.994; p<0.001), late age at first childbirth (OR, 2.446; 95% CI, 1.722–3.473; p<0.001), and being overweight (OR, 1.389; 95% CI, 1.007–1.917; p=0.045). CONCLUSION: Early menarche, late age at first childbirth, and BMI ≥23 kg/m² were more associated with PABC than non-PABC.

Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine 2012;29(1):42-44
Plasma cell myelomas generally manifest as bone or soft-tissue tumors with variable mass effects, pain, and infiltrative behavior. Extramedullary involvement occurs most commonly in the spleen, liver, lymph nodes, and kidneys, but intracranial involvement in plasma cell myeloma is a rare extramedullary manifestation. These authors recently encountered a case of intracranial involvement of plasma cell myeloma. A 69-year-old man was hospitalized for headache and mental changes. Brain CT showed subdural hemorrhage caused by plasma cell myeloma. Plasma cell myeloma with intracranial involvement has poor prognosis, and the patient in this case died from acute complications, such as subdural hemorrhage. Based on this case report, it is suggested that more effective treatment regimens of plasma cell myeloma with intracranial involvement be developed. Moreover, a screening method and decision on the appropriate time for intracranial involvement are needed for plasma cell myeloma patients.

Journal of the Korean Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine 2009;33(3):357-360
Patients with conversion disorder are often presented with critical symptoms or signs which could suggest severe organic disorders. Hysterical hemiparesis is a relatively rare presentation and it is difficult to diagnose because it is displayed as a unilateral motor weakness with or without sensory deficits. A previously healthy 23-years-old woman developed sudden onset of hemiplegia and hemianesthesia with loss of anal tone. Before the onset, she had a traffic accident. A through medical workup including X-rays, MRI, CT scans, EMG, and brain SPECT revealed no organic causes for such neurologic deficits. She gradually regained neurologic function over 2 months from the onset. Conversion disorder should be considered when symptom- related anatomic or physiologic abnormalities could not be proven with appropriate workup. Medical evaluation must be performed in advance to the diagnosis of conversion disorder to avoid misdiagnosis.

Korean Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery 2015;58(11):759-763
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common yet an under-diagnosed sleep related breathing disorder associated with many adverse health outcomes. OSA is commonly associated with cardiovascular disorders that include coronary artery disease, heart failure, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias and stroke. The aim of this study was to investigate the physical characteristics of OSA patients as a screening test for sleep apnea associated cardiovascular disease. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: One hundred twenty-six adult OSA patients were enrolled in this study. All subjects underwent an overnight polysomnography (PSG) and were determined body mass index (BMI), neck circumstance, waist circumstance, tonsil size, etc. Cardiovascular events, such as hypertension, cardiovascular accident, myocardial infarction, and angina were analyzed. The correlation and multiple regression analysis were conducted to find influential and predictive factors of cardiovascular complications of OSA. RESULTS: PSG findings, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), minimal oxygen saturation, and oxygen desaturation index were associated with BMI, neck circumstance, and waist circumstance. Tonsil size was also associated with AHI and oxygen desaturation index. However, PSG results were not associated with cardiovascular accidents of OSA patients. Hypertension was associated with tonsil size, angina was associated with Mallampati score and cardiovascular accident was associated with tonsil size. CONCLUSION: Although we cannot find the statistical relation between PSG results and cardiovascular disease, tonsil size and Mallampati score influenced the risk of cardiovascular accident.

Blood Research 2023;58(4):208-220
Background:
While treatment strategies for mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) have evolved, patients often experience disease progression and require additional treatment therapies. Ibrutinib presents a promising option for relapsed or refractory MCL (RR-MCL). This study investigated real-world treatment outcomes of ibrutinib in patients with RR-MCL.
Methods:
A single-center retrospective analysis investigated clinical characteristics and survival outcomes of patients with RR-MCL, treated with ibrutinib.
Results:
Forty-two patients were included, with 16 received rituximab and bendamustine, and 26 receiving anthracycline-based regimens as front-line treatment. During a median follow-up of 46.0 months, the response rate to ibrutinib was 69%, with 12 CRs and 8 partial responses. Disease progression (54.8%) and adverse events (11.9%) were the primary reasons for discontinuation. Median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were approximately 16.4 and 50.1 months, respectively. Patients older than 70 years (P =0.044 and P =0.006), those with splenomegaly (P =0.022 and P=0.006), and those with a high-risk simplified Mantle Cell Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (sMIPI) (P<0.001 and P<0.001) exhibited siginificantly inferior PFS and OS. Notably, patients with a high-risk sMIPI relapsed earlier. Post-ibrutinib treatment yilded an OS of 12.2 months, while clinical trial participants demonstrated superior survival compared to those receiving chemotherapy alone.
Conclusion
This study underscores the importance of considering patient characteristics before administering ibrutinib as salvage therapy. Early relapse was associated with poor outcomes, highlighting the need for novel therapeutic strategies.

Journal of Korean Dental Science 2023;16(2):149-155
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the presence of a space maintainer affects the accuracy of an intraoral scanner.
Materials and Methods:
The maxillary primary first molar typodont tooth was removed from the primary dentition typodont model and a band and loop type space maintainer was delivered. After the model was connected to a dental phantom, intraoral scan was performed using TRIOS 4 (3Shape A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark). The scan was repeated with the same technique without the space maintainer. Each scan was performed 10 times. All scan files into a GOM inspect 2018 software and evaluated the accuracy. The accuracy was evaluated on trueness and precision, and calculated using the root mean square value.Result: When there was a space maintainer in the oral cavity, the trueness value was 0.10±0.02 mm and the precision value was 0.15±0.03 mm. In the absence of the space maintainer, the trueness value was 0.12±0.03 mm and the precision value was 0.16±0.04 mm. There were no significant differences depending on the presence of a space maintainer (P>0.05).
Conclusion
Within the limits of this study, the accuracy of the intraoral scanner was not influenced by the presence of space maintainer.

Diabetes & Metabolism Journal 2024;48(2):279-289
Background:
Recent diabetes management guidelines recommend that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) or glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) with proven cardiovascular benefits should be prioritized for combination therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and established cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study was aimed at evaluating SGLT2i or GLP-1RA usage rates and various related factors in patients with T2DM and established CVD.
Methods:
We enrolled adults with T2DM aged ≥30 years who were hospitalized due to established CVD from January 2019 to May 2020 at 13 secondary and tertiary hospitals in Korea in this retrospective observational study.
Results:
Overall, 2,050 patients were eligible for analysis among 2,107 enrolled patients. The mean patient age, diabetes duration, and glycosylated hemoglobin level were 70.0 years, 12.0 years, and 7.5%, respectively. During the mean follow-up duration of 9.7 months, 25.7% of the patients were prescribed SGLT2is after CVD events. However, only 1.8% were prescribed GLP-1RAs. Compared with SGLT2i non-users, SGLT2i users were more frequently male and obese. Furthermore, they had a shorter diabetes duration but showed worse glycemic control and better renal function at the time of the event. GLP-1RA users had a longer duration of diabetes and worse glycemic control at the time of the event than GLP-1RA non-users.
Conclusion
The SGLT2i or GLP-1RA prescription rates were suboptimal in patients with T2DM and established CVD. Sex, body mass index, diabetes duration, glycemic control, and renal function were associated with the use of these agents.
