Objective To investigate the relationship between the level of serum uric acid(SUA) and carotid atherosclerosis in male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM). Methods A collection of 579 male T2DM patients with or without carotid atherosclerosis were grouped based on quartiles of SUA. Age, SUA, smokers, duration, body mass index(BMI), blood pressure, total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C), blood urea nitrogen(BUN), creatinine(Cr), and HbA1C were determined in all subjects. The plaques in carotid arteries and intima-media thickness(IMT) were measured with high-resolution ultrasound. Results BMI, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, TG, and Cr showed a gradual increase, while HDL-C and HbA1C showed a gradual decrease according to the higher SUA quartiles in male T2DM(P<0.05). Nevertheless, the detectable rates of smokers, duration, age, TC, LDL-C, and BUN had no relationships with the SUA quartiles(P>0.05). The detectable rate of carotid atherosclerosis and the thickness of carotid plaque were positively associated with the levels of SUA in male patients with T2DM(P<0.05). However, intima-media thickness of carotid arteries did not illustrate the correlation with the levels of SUA in male T2DM patients(P>0.05). Age, HbA1C, and SUA were independent factors of carotid atherosclerosis in these patients by logistic regression(P<0.05). Conclusion The levels of SUA seems to be associated with the occurrence and development of carotid atherosclerosis in male patients with T2DM.

AIMTo study modulation of protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase C (PKC) on the delayed rectifier potassium current (Ik)in guinea pig ventricular myocytes.
METHODSThe delayed rectifier potassium current was recorded by using whole cell arrangement of the patch-clamp procedure.
RESULTScAMP 150 micromol/L increased intracellularly Ik and Ik,tail(pA/pF) from 13.7 +/- 2.1 and 6.1 +/- 0.1 to 18.5 +/- 3.3 and 6.4 +/- 2.1 (P < 0.01, n=6). Ik and Ik,tail(pA/pF) were augmented by 8-CPT-cAMP 150 micromol/L extracellularly from 11.4 +/- 1.8 and 5.3 +/- 0.6 to 17.9 +/- 4.0 and 6.2 +/- 1.3. The half-maximal voltage of activation of Ik was shifted from + 23.3 mV to 18.7 mV by cAMP. Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate(PMA, 10.0 micromol/L) applied intracellularly caused an enhance effect on Ik, with increasing Ik and Ik,tail(pA/pF) from 12.9 +/- 1.8 and 5.0 +/- 1.7 to 23.7 +/- 2.8 and 7.5 +/- 1.1. With shifting position potential of depolarization, effect of PMA on Ik was gradually augmented. PMA resulted in shifting the slop of activation curve from +15.3 mV to +25.6 mV, with only a small effect on the half-maximal voltage of activation of Ik.
CONCLUSIONIk was increased by both PKA and PKC, with different characteristics of regulation.

A 77-year-old man was admitted to our hospital at July 5th,2010 with an unexplained massive pericardial effusion for 10 years. With dyspnea for one month and normal vital signs without pulsus paradoxus, other physical examination included a small amount of moist rale, normal heart sounds, jugular vein engorgement, positive hepatojugular reflux, hepatosplenomegaly and pitting edema of the extremities. The patient had a complex past history with lymph node tuberculosis, primary artertial hypertension, polycythernia vera, chronic renal insufficiency and hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's thyroiditis),and moreover, received a high dose radiation of 31p in 1967. Family history is negative. The patient had no cardiac tamponade or pericardial constriction during 10 years,he received pericardiocentesis twice, and pericardial effusion was exudative with a high proportion of monocyte. There was no evidences of tuberculosis infection, hypothyroidism, malignant tumor, severe heart failure, uremia, trauma, severe bacterial or fungus infection, chronic myeloid leukemia or bone marrow fibrosis during the admission. The patient refused anti tuberculosis, indwelling catheter drainage or surgical therapy. In this rare case, the aetiology of chronic massive pericardial effusion is most probably chronic idiopathic recurrent pericarditis.

Objective To analyse the clinicopathological features of primary small intestine lymphoma(PSIL), and explore the relationship between clinical stage, histological findings, therapeutic modality and prognosis. Methods The clinical data of 34 cases of PSIL were collected, the pathohistological features and results of immunohistochemical examinations were obtained, and the follow-up findings were adopted for comprehensive analysis. Results Among these 34 cases of PSIL,abdominal pain or discomfort, gastrointestinal bleeding and abdominal mass were the predominant symptoms.PSIL mainly involved ileum, especially the bottom of ileum and ileocecal area.Among the 26 patients with follow-up for more than one year, the 1-year survival rate was significantly higher in patients without tumor perforation than those with tumor perforation(76.2% vs 20.0%)(P

Chinese Journal of Applied Physiology 2011;27(2):168-172
OBJECTIVETo explore the recording method of the electrophysiological signals in corticospinal tract (CST) of adult rats by plugging microelectrodes and analyze the characteristics of these signals. These could provide some valuable and basic neural electrophysiological information for further research of recovering and refunctioning after spinal cord injury.
METHODSThe microelectrodes were plugged into the corticospinal tract at the T8 spinal section of Sprague-Dawley rats and the neuro-electrical signals were identified and recorded from CST by means of the Cerebus System. The characteristics of the recorded signals were described with the help of the Offline sorter and Neuroexplorer softwares, including the wavelength, amplitude, discharging frequency, the synchrony among the multi-discharging units from the same electrode and two different electrodes, analysis of interspike interval (ISI), etc.
RESULTSThe continuous and steady spontaneous electrophysiological signals were recorded from CST. Three or four types of discharging signals originated from different discharging units were collected with each electrode. The waveform of the signals appeared bidirectional. The wavelengths were 0.6 - 1.3 ms with wave amplitudes at a grade of hundred microvoltage and high signal-noise ratios. The LFB staining proved that the electrodes were accurately plugged into the corticospinal tract.
CONCLUSIONThe neuro-electrical signals at a grade of hundred microvoltage could be recorded stably from the corticospinal tract of rats by the Cerebus System with the microelectrodes, which provided valuable and basic neural electrophysiological information for further research on recovering and refunctioning after spinal cord injury (SCI) by analyzing the characteristics of electrophysiological signals.
