Objective To assess the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MS) in Shanghai adults according to the criteria of the US National Cholesterol Education Programme Adult Treatment PanelⅢ ( NCEP ATP Ⅲ) definition. Methods Randomly selected adults were studied by means of stratified sampling. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Shanghai with a representative sample of 7 414 Chinese adults aged 35-74 years. Results Defined by the ATPⅢ criterion, the preliminary prevalence of MS was 19.81%. The prevalence of MS was 16.21% (95%CI 15.37%-17.05% ) after age was adjusted. The prevalence of MS was higher in female than in male (22.59% vs 16.64% ,P<0.01 ), and higher in urban than rural residents( 17.43% vs 17.16% ,P<0.01 ). The prevalence of MS increased with age in both male and female, especially in females aged above 55 years. There were 19.81% subjects with over 3 risk factors. The most common combination of four components in MS were central obesity, high triglyceridemia, low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and hypertension. Conclusions There is a high prevalence of MS in Shanghai adults. MS is increasingly becoming a noteworthy health problem. Early-diagnosis and integrated-methods of prevention and treatment of MS are mandatory.

Objective To explore the mechanism of Didang Qigui Recipe on preventing diabetes. Methods Ten female rats were set randomly as normal group, and others 70 were injected with STZ (60 mg/kg) to establish the diabetic model. After the model was established, 50 model rats were randomly divided into five groups:the model group, Didang Qigui Recipe group, the gliclazide group, Didang Qigui Recipe high-dose group, Didang Qigui Recipe and gliclazide group, with 10 rats in each group. All groups were given a gavage with related medicine. With treatment being given respectively, eight weeks later, contents of IL-1βand IL–2 in serum were detected by ELISA and structure of pancreatic β cells was observed by immunohistochemistry and microscope. Results Compared with the model group, the contents of IL-1βand IL-2 in serum of rats decreased in treatment groups, especially in Didang Qigui Recipe group and Didang Qigui and gliclazide group (P<0.05). The degree of apoptosis in pancreaticβcells, especially in the above two groups, has been less affected than other groups (P<0.05). Conclusion Didang Qigui Recipe has preventive and therapeutic effects on diabetes by inhibition of inflammatory response and protection structure of pancreaticβcells.

BACKGROUND:The blastula culture medium can assist the development of zygote from the fertilized egg to the blast blastula. The safety and quality of blastula culture medium directly influences the quality of blastula. OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effect of blastula culture medium on the development of mouse embryos. METHODS: In this study, B6D2F1 mice were used. The female mice were superovulated and mated with male B6D2F1 mice. One day later, the zygotes were colected and cultured in the M16 medium to 4-cel stage. Then, 4-cel stage embryos were transferred into the tested blastula culture medium (experimental group). After 5 days of culture, the forming rate of blastula was examined. Meanwhile, the M16 medium containing endotoxin was used to culture 1-cel mouse zygote (positive control group). The M16 medium with no embryo toxicity was used to culture 1-cel zygote (negative control group). RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The formation rate of blastula was 0 in the positive group, 87.1% in the negative control group, and 87.3% in the experimental group. From the results, the tested blastula culture medium could assist the 1-cel zygote growing to the stage of blastula, and the formation rate of blastula was above 80%. The tested blastula culture medium had no toxicity to the mouse embryo.
