ATM: To define the causes of corneal endothelial cell damage, to investigate the preventive methods, and to observe the variety of corneal endothelial cell in glaucoma using confocal microscope.
METHODS: Totally, 143 eyes of 97 patients with different types of glaucoma, and matched normal people were 20 cases, all 40 eyes. The cell density, cell area and cell variable coefficient were measured used confocal microscope. These indicatives of every kind of glaucoma were compared.
RESULTS: The corneal endothelial cell density of normal group was 2 893. 88±255. 026/mm2 , the group of acute angle-closure glaucoma ( AACG ) was 1 674. 11±683.95/mm2 , and the group of open angle glaucoma (OAG) was 2687. 22±391. 87/mm2, the group of chronic angle-closure glaucoma (CACG) was 2706. 97±351. 27/mm2. In all index the average cell density of corneal endothelial and the average area have statistical significance ( F =62.950, 8. 795;P=0. 000), especially the group of AACG.CONCLUSION: The index of corneal endothelial cell in AACG is lower than that of normal. All index in OAG and CACG is difference with that of normal, but the difference has no statistical significance. And the dominant factor of damaged corneal endothelial is the time of intraocular hypertension.

Objective To investigate the effects of output power, action time and radiofrequency(RF) needle on the cool-tip radiofrequency ablation(RFA) by experimental tools and to determine the value of ultrasonography in size evaluation of RFA zone. Methods The cool-tip RFA to fresh calf liver were monitored by ultrasound. The experiments by single electrode needle were performed with different combination of output power (80 W,120 W) and time (5 min,8 min,10 min). The cluster needle was used for assessment at 5 min with different output power(80 W,120 W).After the end of trial, the longitudinal specimens were cut open. The view and size of the ablation zone were recorded with naked eyes. The pathological changes displayed by optical microscope were recorded as well. Results The measurement of ablation zone with naked eyes showed with the ablation zone expanded with time in 80 W-power cases, but the pace of expansion slowed down, but in 120 W-power cases, expansion of the ablation zone was not obvious; the ablation zone in 120 W-power was bigger than that in 80 W-power at 5 min, their difference decreased with time, and the ablation zones were similar at 10 min.The cluster needle can produce ablation zone with lesser aspect ratio than that of single electrode needle, consequently similar to circle.Ultrasonic measurement of the ablation zone had real discrepancy. Most of longitudinal diameters were greater than the real ones, while in large ablation lesions, vertical diameters were often less than the real ones.Under optical microscope,no change could be found in shape and structure of the cells in ablation zone. Conclusion The output power and performing time have impact on ablation. The high-power output increased heat production as well as reduction of heat conduction.Compared with single electrode needle, the cluster needle produced ablation zone closer to real hepatic tumor, thus has more reliable effect to small hepatocellular carcinoma with diameter around 2 cm.The ultrasond has a great significance in RFA guidance, but it could not accurately define the border of ablation zone.

OBJECTIVETo study the association between HAb18G expression, tumor parameters, metastatic potential and prognosis in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC).
METHODSImmunohistochemical study for HAb18G protein using SP methods was carried out in 144 cases of NSCLC. Nineteen cases of benign lung lesions and 41 cases of normal lung tissue were used as controls. The intensity (positive unit/PU) of HAb18G expression was assessed quantitatively by image analysis software. The results were correlated with tumor parameters, metastatic potential and follow-up data.
RESULTSThe intensity of HAb18G protein expression was significantly higher in NSCLC than that in controls (P = 0.000). In squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas, the expression of HAb18G protein in well-differentiated tumors was lower than that in moderately to poorly differentiated tumors (P = 0.001). Tumors of TNM stage IV had stronger expression than tumors of lower stages (P = 0.000). HAb18G PU was greater in tumors with lymph node metastasis than those without nodal metastasis (P = 0.045). The PU value of tumors with maximal diameter greater than 5 cm was higher than that of the smaller tumors (P = 0.000). It was also higher in male than in female patients (P = 0.046). There was no association between HAb18G protein expression and age of patients, history of smoking, tumor types and gross morphology (P > 0.05). The five-year survival rate in cases with low HAb18G protein expression was higher than that in cases with high expression (P = 0.006). Univariate analysis indicated that patients with high HAb18G protein expression carried a poor prognosis (P = 0.007). Multivariate analysis showed that expression of HAb18G protein was an independent prognostic factor in patients with NSCLC (P = 0.032, relative risk 3.962).
CONCLUSIONSHAb18G protein expression is associated with tumor progression and prognosis. It may represent a useful biomarker for prognostic evaluation.

Acta Academiae Medicinae Sinicae 2002;24(1):59-62
OBJECTIVEAimed at illustrating the means of early diagnosis for prevention of the impairment of kidney function, the results of conservative medical therapy and the surgical treatment in patients with endometriosis of urinary tract.
METHODSSurgical interventions were done in 5 cases with pathological of endometriosis. Ureters were involved by endometriotic lesion in 3 patients, ureters and bladder in one and urethra in another patient. All of the cases were shown at least partial obstruction of the urinary tract by clinical symptoms, diagnostic examinations and the outcomes of various kinds of treatment.
RESULTSHydropnephrosis and hydroureter were shown by ultrasonography, IVP or retrograde pyelography in one case of ureteral obstruction. A small lump of endometriotic foci along the urethra was detected by manual examination and ultra-sonography in one patient. The relieving of the symptoms and signs of the obstruction of the urinary tract in two cases by GnRH-a or progest in was the evidence of the endometriotic lesion. There were two patients underwent surgical resection of the endometriotic foci surrounding the ureter after medical therapy.
CONCLUSIONSUrinary tract endometriosis are rarely seen and usually escape the attention of the physicians, while they usually cause obstruction of the urinary tract and finally impairment of kidney function if not treated in time. This kind of disease can be easily diagnosed by imaging detection with ultra-sonography, IVP or retrograde pyelography. Conservative treatment with GnRH-a and long acting progesterone as well as surgical treatments are effective for this kind of disease.
