The ratio of plasma aldosterone concentration to plasma renin activity (ARR) is a practical parameter in screening for primary aldosteronism (PA).However, variations of the cutoff value of ARR in different studies have been reported due to plenty of influential factors that may affect the secretions of renin and aldosterone. Lack of standardization of assays for ARR also makes direct comparisons among different studies difficult. The associated influential factors on ARR were introduced in this review.

AIM To study the protective and antiperoxidative effects of baicalin on myocardial ischemia. METHODS The rat anterior decenging branch of left coronary artery was occluded for 40 min and reperfusion for 120 min. Hemodynamics (LVP, LV d p /d t ) and electrocardiogram (ECG, lead Ⅱ) monitored continuously with polygraph, then the myocardium were taken to assay lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and superoxide dismatase (SOD). RESULTS Baicalin 10 or 40 mg?kg -1 iv depressed changes in LDH, MDA and SOD in myocardium after ischemia for 40 min and reperfusion for 120 min in rats. Baicalin 10 and 40 mg?kg -1 iv markedly improved the ?d p /d t max (kPa?s -1 ), LVSP in rat after ischemia for 40 min and reperfusion. CONCLUSION Baicalin possesses a protective effect against myocardial ischemia via attenuating lipid peroxidation.

Objective To explore the clinical effects of enema combined with massage therapy on jaundice in premature infants. Methods Seventy-five premature infants with jaundice were randomly divided into 3 groups, enema combined message therapy group(group A),abdominal massage therapy group(group B),and double-side phototherapy group(group C).All 3 groups were received the same formula fee-ding,intravenous nutrition and identical drug treatment.Group A was given enema with mixed kaiselu and normal saline together with 60 times clockwise abdominal massage once a day for 2 weeks.Group B only received abdominal massage twice per day for 2 weeks.Transcutaneous bilirubin(TB) indexes of all the premature infants in the 3 groups were detected and transformed into total TB concentrations every morning, through version of MINOLTA JM-102 transcutaneous bilirubin radiometer made in Japan. When TB index counted more than 196.58 ?mol/L,group A and B were given single-side phototherapy for 24 hours.Neither enema nor abdominal massage was given to group C,and double-side phototherapy was applied when TB indexes were above 196.58 ?mol/L.Daily TB indexes, duration of jaundice and phototherapy, time of meconium exhaustion, defecation times in each day, incidence of constipation and feeding intolerance were recorded. Results Duration of jaunhospitalized and phototherapy were significantly shortened in group A compared with those of the other groups. In 34 premature infants who were hospital for at least 2 weeks,TB indexes in group C were lower than those in group B on the 9th day.On the 12th day and the 14th day,TB indexes in group A and C were lower than those in group B(Pa

Aflatoxins produced primarily by two closely related fungi, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, are mutagenic and carcinogenic in animals and humans. Of many approaches investigated to manage aflatoxin contamination, biological control method has shown great promise. Numerous organisms, including bacteria, yeasts and nontoxigenic fungal strains of A. flavus and A. parasiticus, have been tested for their ability in controlling aflatoxin contamination. Great successes in reducing aflatoxin contamination have been achieved by application of nontoxigenic strains of A. flavus and A. parasiticus in fields of cotton, peanut, maize and pistachio. The nontoxigenic strains applied to soil occupy the same niches as the natural occurring toxigenic strains. They, therefore, are capable of competing and displacing toxigenic strains. In this paper, we review recent development in biological control of aflatoxin contamination.

Microbiology 1992;0(06):-
A biosurfactant-producing strain(S_6)was isolated from oil-containing wastewater in oxidation ditch and identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on physiological and biochemical experiments and 16S rDNA sequence analysis.Infrared spectrum analysis revealed that S_6 produced glucolipid in the process of metabolism. It was observed that S_6 decreased the surface tension of water from 72 mN/m to 33.9 mN/m with the critical micelle concentration(CMC)of 50mg/L.The measurement of oil displacement and surface tension demonstrated that the fermented liquid had stable surface activity at varying range of salinity,pH,amount of dissolved oxygen. The optimal culture condition was obtained through orthogonal experiment:glucose 10g/L,urea 5g/L,KH_2PO_4 1g/L,liquor of microelement 2mL,pH 8.0,water 1000mL;and the biosurfactant production under optimal culture condition was 0.173g/L.

Objective To assess the diagnostic value of CT spectral imaging using quantitative iodine-based material decomposition images in the evaluation of pulmonary embolism. Methods Fifty-three patients underwent CT angiography with spectral imaging mode on a GE Discovery CT750HD scanner. Iodine distribution in the lung parenchyma using the iodine-based material decomposition images was quantitatively measured by post-processing. Monochromatic CT angiographic images were reconstructed from the same data sets and thee images were reviewed for the identification and localization of pulmonary embolism as well as the degree ( partial or complete) of the embolic occlusion. The number and location of perfusion defects were recorded. The iodine content of perfusion defects and normal lung parenchyma on the iodine maps were measured by one reader using an ROI analysis. Comparative analyses were obtained using the Chi-square test for categorical data. Two independent samples rank test and 2 related samples signed-rank test were used to compare iodine densities between different groups. Results CT angiography showed no pulmonary embolism in 33 patients, and iodine distribution was homogeneous. A total of 93 clots with lobar ( n = 26), segmental (n = 54) and sub-segmental (n=13) distribution were detected in 19 patients; Fifty-one clots were occlusive and 42 clots were non-occlusive. The iodine-based material decomposition images of all occlusive clots showed lobar, segmental or sub-segmental iodine distribution defects; whereas eleven of 42 non-occlusive clots had evidence of iodine distribution defects. There was significant difference ( x2 = 39. 94,P<0. 01 ) in the perfusion defects between occlusive and non-occlusive clots. There was a significant difference in iodine content between normal lung parenchyma [ (1.92 ±0. 54) g/L] and perfusion defects [ (0. 30 ± 0. 20)g/L] (Z= -5.63, P < 0. 01 ). There was a significant difference in the iodine content of peffusion defects before [ (0. 26 ± 0. 23 )g/L] and after anticoagulation [ (0. 94 ± 0. 50 )g/L ] ( Z = -3.93,P < 0. 01 ). Conclusion With the ability of iodine mapping, CT spectral imaging is areliable method in the evaluation of pulmonary embolism both qualitatively and quantitatively, and may be a useful tool in providing information regarding the severity of PE and monitoring therapeutic efficacy.

Microbiology 2008;0(11):-
The mechanism of chromium accumulation and microstructure transformation of the fused yeast were studied in this paper. The result showed that the process of Cr6+ reduction and adsorption was accom-panied by the H+ consumption. The main adsorptive groups on the strain surface included amino, hydroxyl, phosphate group and amide, among which phosphate group played vital role in the chromium accumulation. The removal rate of chromium and reduction rate of hexavalent chromium declined 70% and 46%,respec-tively,when phosphate group was masked.During the adsorption process the chromium ions complexed on the surface of fused yeast was transported into the cell wall and combined with inclusion to form steady spe-cies and this took 90 min to reach the equilibrium. The biosorption and reduction of Cr on the cell surface would alter microstructure of cell surface, reduce cell membrane potential and increase cell membrane per-meability.
