Objective To investigate the exposure level of VOCs in different population and the health effects. Methods In 2005, a questionnaire survey relating to inhalation exposure assessment of VOCs and housing decoration characteristics was carried out in 200 newly decorated apartments (628 residents), 30 house decoration workers and 20 painting workers of an automobile manufacture factory. Indoor concentrations of formaldehyde, BTEX-compounds and TVOC were measured in typical apartments, offices, houses in where the decoration workers were operating, the painting workshops, and public indoor environments. Average daily exposure doses and potential doses for common people at home (non-occupational exposure group) and workers in occupational environments (occupational exposure group) to formaldehyde and BTEX-compounds and TVOC were estimated by combining the survey results with monitoring data. Objective:To determine whether heme oxygenase-2(HO-2) gene deletion can attenuate oxidative injury induced by free Fe2+. Methods:Stereotactic injection of 10 μl sterile FeCl2 (10 mmol/L) was made into the right striata of HO-2 knockout mice and wild-type mice. Brain edema severity was measured at 24 h. Cell viability, protein oxidation, and lipid oxidation of the basal ganglia were determined at 72 h. Western blot analysis was applied for heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) measurement.Results: Brain water content significantly decreased in HO-2 knockout mice at 24 h compared with wild-type mice. Protein oxidation and lipid oxidation significantly decreased in HO-2 knockout mice at 72 h compared with wild-type mice, while the striatal cell viability increased significantly. HO-1 expression at baseline and 72 h was also similar to that in wild-type mice. Conclusion:These results show that HO-2 gene deletion can protect basal ganalia cells from free Fe2+ -mediated oxidative stress injury,suggesting that selective inhibition of HO-2 may have a protective effect on brain oxidative injury.

Objective To study the findings of CT and MRI in tongue cancer.Methods 21 cases of tongue cancer were examined by CT or MRI,CT examined 7 cases,MRI examined 14 cases.Results MRI could display the tongue cancer in all the cases,but CT only display 5 of 7 cases of the tumour.The value of CT and MRI was same in displaying soft tissue direct invasion.MRI and contrast enhanced CT could display cervical lymph node metastases.CT was superior to MRI in the diagnosis of mandible invasion.Conclusion MRI is superior to CT in the display soft tissue of tongue cancer and the metastases.CT is optimal in detection of cortical bone invasion.

AIM: To investigate the effects of proteasome inhibitor Z-LLL-CHO(MG132) on human osteosarcoma cell line MG-63 and its possibly mechanism.METHODS: After treated with different concentration of MG132,the morphological change,ultrastructral morphology,cell viability,cell apoptosis,gene transcription and protein expression in MG-63 cells were accessed by fluorescence microscope,electron microscope,MTT assay,agrose gel electrophoresis,FCM,RT-PCR and Western blotting.RESULTS: Proteasome inhibitor MG132 was an effective inducer of apoptosis in human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells.Not only apoptotic changes,but also cell arrest at G2-M-phase,the accumulation of p27kip1,the accumulation of activated caspase-8 and increased ratio of Bax∶Bcl-2 were observed.However,to normal human diploid fibroblast cells,MG132 did not show apoptosis-inducing effect.CONCLUSION: Apoptosis induced by MG132 may be caspase-8,p27kip1and bcl-2-related.

Objective To study the predictive value of serum hyaluronic acid (HA) levels for morphological progression of osteoarthritis (OA).Methods Seventy New Zealand white rabbits were randomly and equally divided into the OA group and the normal control group.OA was induced by injecting 0.5 ml of 2％ papain into the left knee joints and the same volume of sterile saline solution was injected Into right knee joints in control group.The serum HA levels were detected at 1,2,4,6,8,10 and 12 weeks after injection.Then magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and pathohistological changes were observed.T test was used for the analysis of measurment.Resuts Compared with the control group,degeneration changes were found in the OA group,such as thinner articular cartilage,fibrillation and destroyed cartilage matrix,and inflammation,proliferation and degeneration of the synovial tissue.All these changes were much worse with prolonged observation time.The serum HA levels were increased [12 week:(657±132) ng/ml,vs (166±8) ng/ml],which correlate with structural damage.Conclusion Serum HA levels had a predictive value for further development of OA.

AIM: To study the changes in anterior chamber angle after phacoemulsification and foldable IOL implantation with ultrasound biomicroscopy.METHODS: Small-incision phacoemulsification and foldable IOL implantation were performed in 50 eyes of 46 senior patients, and the changes of anterior chamber angle were determined quantitatively by using ultrasound biomicroscopy before and one month after the surgery.RESULTS: In all patients, the angle was widened significantly one month after the surgery (P＜0.01). The measurements of TIA500 ( trabecular-iris angle at 500μm from the scleral spur) , AOD250 (angle-opening distance at 250μm from the scleral spur) and AOD500 (angle-opening distance at 500μm from the scleral spur) increased significantly after the operation ( P＜ 0.01). The mean post/pre-operative TIA500ratio, AOD250 ratio and AOD500 ratio were 1.65 (1.12-4.91),1.81 (1.06-2.67) and 1.65 (1.01-2.76), respectively. A significant negative correlation existed between preoperative and postoperative data.CONCLUSION: Small-incision cataract surgery deepens the anterior chamber and widens anterior chamber angle significantly in senior patients. The narrower the preoperative angle, the higher ratio of post/preoperative ratio found.

Objective To evaluate the role of combination of three-vessel views in ultrasound diagnosis of fetal aortic arch and pulmonary arterial branch anomalies.Methods The data of 66 cases of fetal aortic arch and pulmonary arterial branch anomalies were retrospectively analysed,including echocardiographic data,autopsy and operation records and postnatal follow-up results.Echocardiogaphic features and display frequencies on three vessels and trachea view(3VT),three vessels view(3VV)and three vessels and pulmonary arterial branches view(3VP)were summarized.Results There were 52 cases of aortic arch abnormalities,including 32 cases of right aortic arch with left ductus arteriosus,4 cases of double aortic arch,7 cases of aberrant right subclavian artery,6 cases of coarctation of aorta and 3 cases of interruption of aortic arch.Fourteen cases were diagnosed pulmonary aterial branch abnormalities,including 1 0 cases of crossed pulmonary arteries,2 cases of anomalous origin of left pulmonary artery from aortic arch and 2 cases of pulmonary artery sling.The display frequencies of fetal aortic arch and pulmonary arterial branch anomalies on 3VT,3VV and 3VP were 80.3%,19.7% and 39.4%.Conclusions The combination of three-vessel views is of great value in prenatal diagnosis of fetal aortic arch and pulmonary arterial branch anomalies.

Objective To explore the DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of rats exposed to sodium arsenite. Methods Thirty-two Wistar rats, weighing 180 - 200 g, equal male and female, were randomly divided into 4 groups, 8 in each group. Sodium arsenite 0(control) ,0.05,0.15,0.45 mg/L were given through drinking water for 30 days. Body weight and drinking water consumption were measured every day. Blood were collected and DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes was examined by single cell gel electrophoresis.Results The increase of body mass[( 121.00 ± 38.57), ( 120.62 ± 42.80), ( 125.38 ± 48.68)g]and water intake [(36.9 ± 6.2), (37.9 ± 5.8), (39.3 ± 4.2)ml/d]in 0.05,0.15,0.45 mg/L sodium arsenite groups were compared with the control group[( 119.25 ± 47.27)g, (38.4 ± 5.1 )ml/d], and the difference were not significant (F = 0.040,0.828, all P ＞ 0.05). The tail ratios[46.25%(185/400) ,57.00%(228/400),64.00%(256/400)], tail lengths [(32.89 ± 17.18), (58.74 ± 36.28), (77.55 ± 35.73 ) μm]and tail moments [(6.29 ± 3.74), ( 11.20 ± 9.64),(17.30 ± 12.60)μm]in 0.05,0.15,0.45 mg/L sodium arsenite groups were significantly higher than those of the control group[39.25%(157/400), (18.73 ± 15.83),(2.61 ± 1.05)μm, all P ＜ 0.01], and the tail ratios,tail lengths and tail moments in lymphocytes increased with increased doses of arsenic concentration. Conclusions Low doses of arsenic exposure can induce DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of rats.

Objective To evaluate the diagnostic value of 64 multidetector-row CT angiography for internal carotid artery(ICA)stenosis and the application in the follow-up of carotid endarterectomy and percutaneous transluminal stenting.Methods Forty transient ischemie attack(TIA)patients with interpretable CTA and DSA of the cervical carotid arteries were selected from May 2005 to December 2005. This yielded a total of 80 vessels.The CTA curved planar reformations(CPR)and DSA images referenced to the distal cervical internal carotid were graded by two senior neuroradiologists blindly,according to the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial(NASCET)guidelines.The paired-t test was used to verify the statistical significant difference between pre-operating and post-operating of carotid endarterectomy or percutaneous transluminal stenting in measuring the vascular diameter and area of cross section using CTA.Results When the 70% stenosis was used as the cut-off value,the seasitivity,specificity,negative predictive value,and the positive predicting value were 97%,95%,95%,and 98%,respectively.There was statistically significant difference in measuring the vascular diameter(P
