Objective To evaluate the effect of ?-lipoic acid(ALA)as a antioxidant on the histomorphologic changes of the kidney in type 2 diabetic Goto Kakisaki rats. Methods Four healthy Wistar rats(normal control group)and 10 GK rats were divided randomly into two groups:diabetic control group and lipoic acid-treatment diabetic group(?-lipoic acid 35 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection qd alt),who were both fed for 12 weeks.Indexes of oxidative stress of kidney were measured.Sections of renal tissue were evaluated using both a light and electron microscope to assess histomorphologic changes.Paraffin sections of the left kidneys were prepared and stained with H&E,PAS and Masson stains to compare the histomorphologic changes. The image analysis software of Motic Image Advanced 3.1 was used to measure the area of glomerulus and mesangial region, and the thickness of the glomerular basement membrane(GBM).Results Compared with normal control group, there were significant decreases in GSH,SOD,VitC and VitE levels in diabetic control group. The kidneys of the normal control group exhibited normal cortical morphology as determined by light microscope.Mild glomerulosclerosis, characterized by widening of the mesangial region, mesangial expansion and intercapillary cells proliferation, and GBM thickening under electron microscope were observed in the diabetic control group. In the ALA-treatment group, all the above pathological changes were alleviated. Conclusion In the kidney of type 2 diabetic rat, there exists oxidative stress which is associated with diabetic nephropathy.?-Lipoic acid can alleviate the abnormal histomorphologic changes of the kidney via antioxidative effects.
4.Postoperative radiotherapy and prognostic factors of soft tissue sarcoma
Chinese Journal of Radiation Oncology 1992;0(04):-
Objective To study the effectiveness of postoperative radiotherapy and prognostic factors of soft tissue sarcoma. Methods Sixty-four soft tissue sarcoma patients admitted from June 1987 to May 1997 were treated by complete, partial or extended resection and postoperative external beam radiotherapy. Fourty-eight patients received 1.8~2.0?Gy/fraction,5 f/w, to a dose of 40~72?Gy (median 60?Gy). Sixteen patients received 1.2~1.5?Gy/f, bid, 6 hr interval to a dose of 64.8~85.0?Gy (median 66.5?Gy). The 5-year survival and locoregional control rates were estimated by Kaplan-Meier method. Logrank test and Cox regression were used to study the significance of predictive factors. Results The overall 5-year survival and locoregional control rates were 60.2%, 57.9% respectively. Those of the conventional group and hyperfractionated group were 54.3% and 61.9% vs 64.3% and 42.9% ,respectively. Cox regression analysis showed that histologic grade, size and site of the primary tumor, fractionation of radiotherapy were independent prognostic factors for survival. Conclusions Complete or extended resection followed by radiotherapy are satisfactory for soft tissue sarcoma. Histologic grade , size, site of the primary tumor and method of fractionation were prognostic factors.

Objective:China was categorized as one of the 68 countdown countries to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) 5. This paper aimed to analyze the situation of maternal survival, and coverage of proven cost effective interventions in China, where specific attention was paid to disparities. Methods: National maternal and child mortality surveillance data were used to estimate maternal mortality ratio (MMR). Coverage for proven interventions was analyzed based on National Health Services Survey, where experts' consultations were made for complementation. Results: There had been a significant reduction of MMR in China, however great disparities existed, with rural Ⅱ to Ⅳ areas experiencing 2 to 5 times higher maternal mortality risks than urban areas and accounting for over 70% maternal mortality burdens. Postpartum hemorrhage, pregnancy associated hypertension, embolism and sepsis were the leading causes, and over 75% of the maternal mortality was caused by preventable or curable causes. Maternal health services utilization decreased in accordance with region' s development level. Socioeconomic factors like financial difficulties were the main obstacles hindering access of care.Even those who made deliveries in hospitals faced different probabilities in receiving qualified care according to their socioeconomic standings. Conclusion: China is on track to achieve MDG 5, however great disparities exist. It is necessary to specifically target rural types Ⅱ to Ⅳ areas. Major causes of maternal mortality which can be prevented or averted through the provision of essential obstetrical care. Yet as compared with maternity health needs, insufficient coverage of maternal and child health (MCH) care services and poor service quality are the leading predisposing factors contributing to maternal mortality in China.

Chinese Journal of Dermatology 2013;46(8):591-593
Objective To evaluate skin barrier function in children with atopic dermatitis (AD) as well as healthy children from two communities in Shanghai and to assess the relationship between skin barrier function and AD severity. Methods Totally,169 children with AD and 142 healthy children aged 3-12 years were recruited from two communities (Changning Xining community and Jiading Juyuan community) in Shanghai,China.Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and stratum corneum hydration were measured in normal appearing nonlesional skin at four body sites (dorsal and volar forearm, cheek and anterior shin) of the patients,as well as in normal skin at the same sites of the controls.AD severity was evaluated by using the severity scoring of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) index. Results Compared with the healthy children, the patients with AD showed higher TEWL value at all of the four body sites (all P < 0.05),but lower water content in stratum corneum at dorsal forearm and anterior shin (both P < 0.05).In patients with AD,the SCORAD index was positively correlated with mean TEWL value, but negatively correlated with the mean water content in stratum corneum. Conclusion Skin barrier function may serve as an index for evaluating the severity of AD.
