OBJECTIVETo explore a simple but novel method of strengthening gypsum material by cyanoacrylate infiltration. To evaluate the influence of cyanoacrylate on the mechanical properties of dental gypsum models.
METHODSGypsum specimens were polished to the dimension of 35 mmx4 mmx4 mm. Butyl-cyanoacrylate was diluted with chloroform at different concentrations, namely 20% and 30% cyanoacrylate. Gypsum specimens were infiltrated by diluting one component of cyanoacrylate at different concentrations for 8 h and then dried for analysis. The changes in elastic modulus, fracture toughness, compressive strength, biaxial strength, brinell hardness were measured. The data were analyzed using software OriginPro 8.
RESULTSThe viscosity measurements indicated that diluted cyanoacrylate were Newtonian fluids and the viscosity increased slightly within the 48 hours of preparation but still similar as water at room temperature, which could be used to infiltrating gypsum. The gypsum infiltrated with cyanoacrylate exhibited good physicochemical properties. The biaxial strength, fracture toughness, compressive strength and brinell hardness of the gypsum were improved by 39%, 30%, 63% and 18%, respectively.
CONCLUSIONCyanoacrylate can significantly improve the strength of gypsum model which indicates the potential clinical application.

In this study, we use pot experiment to evaluate the effect of plant growth regulator on plant morphology and biomass allocation of Salvia miltiorrhiza. Different concentrations of uniconazole were supplied to S. miltioohiza by means of foliar spray. Height, breadth and stem diameter were measured dynamically, the biomass of leaf, stem, flower and fruit, root biomass and biomass ratio were also examined at the harvest time. Owing to the treatment, plant morphology showed significant changes, the height had been greatly reduced and the breadth decreased largely. Meanwhile, the biomass allocation changed too. The biomass ratio of leaf and stem had been notably reduced while the biomass ratio of root had been increased remarkably. It appears that foliar application of uniconazole during vigorous growth period in S. miltioohiza has dramatic effect on dwarfing plant and improving resistant to lodging. This measure could also be applied to condensed cultivation of S. miltioohiza to increase production.

PurposeTo evaluate the significance of ultrasonic elastography strain ratio, MRI and the combination of both in diagnosis of breast tumor.Materials and MethodsFifty-four cases with single breast tumor underwent preoperative ultrasound elasticity imaging and MRI. Accuracy of ultrasound elastography strain rate ratio (SRR) of the tumor and surrounding normal breast tissue was measured by quantitative ultrasound elastography, and its combination with MRI were analyzed. ResultsThere was signiifcant differences on SRR between the benign group and the malignant group (2.24±1.28vs 4.96±1.73, t=2.648,P<0.05). Optimal threshold of ultrasonic elastography SRR in differential diagnosis of breast benign from malignant tumor was 2.41 determined by ROC curve. The accuracy of SRR, MRI and the combination of both in differentiating benign from malignant breast tumor was 81.48% (44/54), 85.19% (46/54) and 96.30%(52/54), respectively. There was no statistic difference between SRR and MRI in diagnostic accuracy (χ2=0.267,P>0.05). Combined both had higher diagnosis accuracy when compared with SR and MRI separately (χ2=6.000 and 3.967,P<0.05).Conclusion Ultrasonic elastography strain ratio is accurate and objective in differentiating benign from malignant breast tumors. It is a valuable quantitative index in clinical practice. Moreover, SRR combined with MRI can reduce the misdiagnosis rate.

AIM To determine the dynamic changes of monoamine neurotransmitters and their metabolites in various brain regions of cerebral ischemia reperfusion mice. METHODS Concentrations of monoamine neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT) and metabolites were determined by HPLC-ECD on d 0,1,3,5 and d 20 after cerebral ischemia reperfusion by common carotid artery occlusion. RESULTS The cerebral ischemia reperfusion mice showed decreased concentrations of NE, MHPG, DA, DOPAC, 5-HT and 5-HIAA in various brain regions, especially in hippocampus. CONCLUSION Several neuron systems play an important role in neurons damage of cerebral ischemia reperfusion, especially the NE and DA in hippocampus which is sensitive to the ischemia damage. The data offer useful guides for clinical treatments of cerebral ischemia diseases.

Objective:To explore the central neurobiological mechanisms of pleasure effect on rats with neuralgia treated by tuina manipulations of An-pressing and Rou-kneading Huantiao (GB 30).Methods:A total of 64 male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were used in this study.Eighteen rats were randomly selected as a normal group, and the other 46 rats were used to duplicate the chronic constriction injury (CCI) model.Ten rats failed in modeling and 36 rats succeeded. These 36 rats were then randomly divided into a model group and a tuina group, with 18 rats in each group. The rats in the normal group and the model group did not receive any interventions, while those in the tuina group received An-pressing and Rou-kneading Huantiao (GB 30),1 min for each time, once a day,3 weeks in total.Heating tests were evaluated to observe the change of pain-sensitivity score before intervention,1 week after intervention,2 weeks after intervention, and 3 weeks after intervention. After 1 week of intervention,2 weeks of intervention, and 3 weeks of intervention,6 rats were randomly selected from each group respectively for brain extraction. The change of Nissl's body and β-endorphin in the accumbens nucleus as well as amygdaloid nucleus of pleasure circuits, and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) in the arcuate nucleus were analyzed by methods of histochemistry and molecular biology. Results:After modeling, the pain-sensitivity scores of the tuina group and the model group were statistically different from the score of the normal group (both P<0.05).After An-pressing and Rou-kneading Huantiao (GB 30) for one week, the pain-sensitivity score of the tuina group had statistical difference compared with that of the model group (P<0.05).At each different time point:the amounts of Nissl's body in accumbens nucleus and amygdaloid nucleus of the tuina group were significantly more than those of the model group (all P<0.01).Besides,the numbers of β-endorphin immunoreactive cells in the accumbens nucleus and amygdaloid nucleus of the rats in the tuina group were significantly higher than those in the model group (all P<0.01),and so was the expression of POMC in arcuate nucleus (all P<0.01).Conclusion:An-pressing and Rou-kneading Huantiao (GB 30),where the sciatic nerve is ligated, can reduce pain-sensitivity score and increase pain tolerance value of rats with chronic neuralgia. It can increase the activity of neurons in accumbens nucleus and amygdaloid nucleus of pleasure circuits, which indicates that the analgesia effect of tuina therapy may correlate with pleasure effect, and also reveals a part of neurobiological mechanisms of neuralgia.

ObjectiveTo investigate safety and efficacy of one-stage pedicle screw fixation plus 360° spinal canal decompression and reconstruction in treatment of severe thoracolumbar burst fractures.MethodsThe study reviewed 11 patients (8 males and 3 females, at age range of 19-59 years, mean 34.4 years) with severe thoracolumbar burst fracture, who underwent one-stage posterior pedicle screw fixation, 360° spinal canal decompression and reconstruction. The injury location was at T12 in one patient, at L1 in three, at L2 in two, at L3 in three and at L4 in two. According to AO classification, all patients were with type A 3.3 fractures. McCormack load score was 7-9 points ( average 8.2 points). Based on the Frankel' s scale, the spinal cord function was classified as grade A in one patient, grade B in one, grade C in five and grade D in four. ResultsAll the operations accomplished successfully, with operation duration for 3.5-4.5 hours ( mean 4.1 hours) , blood loss for 900-2 800 ml ( mean 1 750 ml) and allogeneic blood transfusion for 400-1 200 ml ( average 760 ml). There was no complication either during or after operation. The loss rate of the anterior vertebrae column height was 48% -85% ( average 64.2% )before operation and recovered to 95% -100% (average 98.6% ) of the normal. The kyphotic Cobb angle was at -12°-35 ° ( average 12.1 ° ) before operation and recovered to - 30°-7 ° ( average - 8.1 ° ) after operation. The spinal canal stenosis rate was improved remarkably. The patients were followed up for 10-18 months (average 14. 5 months), which showed solid bone fusion, with no implant failure. The spinal cord function was improved Ⅰ to Ⅲ degrees in all patients except for one patient at grade A. One patient had mild lower back pain.ConclusionsOne-stage pedicle screw fixation plus 360° spinal canal decompression and reconstruction is a good alternative for severe thoracolumbar burst fracture, but it is essential for choosing strictly the surgical indications.
