As one subclass of forkhead proteins, the forkhead box O ( FoxO) transcription factors take part in a series of bio-logical processes including cellular apoptosis, damaged DNA re-pair and cleavage of reactive oxygen species(ROS). Increasing evidence highlights that oxidative stress elicited by FoxOs con-tributes to imbalance of redox status in cells related to bone me-tabolism, resulting in development of the pathogenesis of osteo-porosis. This article reviews the relationship of FoxOs and osteo-porosis, which may be beneficial for the research of pathological mechanism and therapeutic strategy of osteoporosis.

Genistein, as one kind of phytoestrogens, can stimu-late osteoblastic proliferation, differention and mineralization, and can also inhibit bone resorption activity of osteoclast. The effect of genistein on bone metabolism lies in various molecular mechanisms. This paper reviews the research progress of the an-ti-osteoporotic action of genistein and its mechanism, which may provide a basis for the research and development of new agents to treat osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND:Low concentration of nicotine promotes the angiogenesis and facilitates the healing of skin wounds. However, the role of low concentration of nicotine on the repair of maxil ofacial soft tissue trauma especial y oral mucosa stil remains unclear
OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effect of low concentration of nicotine on mucosa defect repair of rat hard palate.
METHODS:A circular soft tissue defect at 3 mm diameter was produced in the centre of hard palate of 65 Wistar rats. After the operation, animals were randomly divided into low concentration of nicotine with gel group, gel group and control group. Rats were sacrificed at 3, 7, 10 and 14 days post-surgery. The wound healing was detected with hematoxylin-eosin staining and the difference of wound healing in different groups was compared with gross observation and image measurement.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:There was no significant difference in the wound healing in different groups on day 3 post-surgery. On days 7 and 10, the group of low concentrations of nicotine with gel was faster than gel group and control group (P<0.05);the wounds were completely healed on day 14, with no significant difference among the groups. Low concentrations of nicotine may promote the mucosa defects repair of rat hard palate.

Objective To study the effect of total nutrient admixture (TNA) on lipid metabolism in rats with acute hepatic failure (AHF). Methods Fifty-six male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: normal diet group, nitrogen-free diet group, fat-free nutrient admixture group, and TNA group. All rats were injected with D-galac- tosamine to induce AHF model Meanwhile, 6 healthy Wistar rats were used as control group. TNA provided energy 221.75 kJ (1 kcal=4.184 kJ), nitrogen 0.365 g, nitrogen to energy ratio 1:145, amino acids 2.28 g (including branched-chain amino acid 0.70 g), glucose 7.85 g, and fat 1.25 g on a daily basis. After 10 days of the operation of Jugular vein puncture tube, blood glucose, blood lipid, liver and renal function were determined. Results The blood glucose level was significantly higher in TNA group than that in fat-free nutrient admixture group (P < 0.05). The levels of serum triglyceride and cholesterol were highest in fat-free nutrition admixture group, and triglyceride level was signif- icantly higher than that in normal diet group and nitrogen-free diet group (P <0.05). The levels of serum triglyceride and cholesterol were significantly higher in TNA group than those in normal diet group (P <0.05). The levels of ala- nine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin and blood urea nitrogen were lower in TNA group than those in fat-free nutrient admixture group (P < 0.05). Conclusion The nutritional proportion of TNA is suitable for the metabolism disorder of hepatic failure, and therefore TNA can reasonably promote the anabolism and reverse the deteri- oration of hepatic failure in rats.
