Objective To study the clinical characteristics of silent paraganglioma ( PGL) .Methods A total of 21 patients with silent PGL confirmed by surgical pathology and hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of chongqing Medical University from Mar .2008 to Dec.2013 were enrolled in this study .The clinical manifesta-tions, hormone level, imaging findings, pathologic characteristic, treatment and follow-up data were reviewed and analyzed retrospectively .Results Among the 21 cases of silent PGL , 8 were male and 13 were female, with 47.05 years as the mean age(ranging from 26 to 67 years old).PGL tumors in silent group were mainly located in the right side, and left to right ratio was 2∶5.Silent PGL with tumor diameter <3 cm, 3-5 cm, >5 cm were 5, 7,and 9 cases respectively.Its constituent ratio was 23.8%, 33.3% and 42.9% respectively, significantly higher compared with that of symptomatic PGL (9.8%,43.9%,and 46.3%respectively).Silent PGL can be i-dentified from other adrenal incidentaloma based on enhanced CT value in each period .Biochemical examination or functional imaging further could facilitate the diagnosis of silent PGL .All the 21 cases were conducted with surgical treatment , and hypertensive crisis occurred to 4 cases during operation .Conclusions Silent PGL is not easy to be detected due to its non-specific clinical manifestations .The diagnosis needs the combined analysis on anatomical imaging characteristics , biochemical examination , functional imaging and pathological findings .Sur-gery is the most effective treatment .Postoperative pathological tips and long-term follow-up are both required for PGL, no matter benign or malignant .

AIM: To elevate the stability of the volatile oil in Jiufen Cataplasm (Semen strychni,Herba ephedrae,Oilbanum and Myrrha) with the help of inclusion with ?-Cyclodextrin. METHODS: The quality of the volatile oil in Jiufen Cataplasm before and after stability test was examined by thin layer chromatography and differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. RESULTS: The combination of volatile oil and ?-cyclodextrin could form stable inclusion compound that helped constant in before and after inclusion. CONCLUSION: The process of enclosure with ?-CD can keep the active components of the volatile oil in Jiufen Cataplasm.

The efficiency of conservative treatment for cervical radiculopathy was retrospectively reviewed. Eighty-one patients were included; 40 patients presented with C7, 37 with C6, 2 with C5, and 2 with C8 radiculopathy. Seventy-eight patients underwent MRI examination prior to treatment, showing intervertebral disc protrusion in 71 cases, and spinal stenosis in 7. Eighty-one patients underwent a treatment wearing a cervical collar and home-based halter cervical traction: 5-6 kg for 20 minutes, once a day for 3 to 6 weeks. The mean duration of symptoms prior to neurosurgical evaluation was (43.0?8.3) days. Sixty-three (78%) of 81 patients responded to therapeutic traction, experiencing significant or total pain relief, three could not tolerate the traction, and traction failed in 15 patients. Three (1.89%) of the 63 patients undergoing traction treatment suffered recurrence of symptoms and required surgery.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a pathogenic mosquito-borne flavivirus which is responsible for outbreaks of severe viral encephalitis. The cellular entry of JEV is a prerequisite for Japanese encephalitis, so the understanding of its underlying mechanisms will provide more approaches for treating such disease. In recent years, increasing research has been conducted to investigate the mechanisms of cellular entry of JEV, and the results of research on other flavivirus have expanded the research directions for JEV. More methods will be used to suppress JEV infection because of the development of E protein antibodies and the discovery of several inhibitors of the cellular entry process. This review will summarize the recent advances in the mechanisms of JEV cellular entry and membrane fusion.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effect of Tai Ji Quan (TJQ) training on strength and function of lower limbs in the aged.

METHODSSixty senile subjects were recruited and assigned to the TJQ group and the control group (imparting health knowledge)by random digit table. Patients in the TJQ group received 24-style TJQ training for 18 months (60 min each time, 5 times per week), while those in the control group were imparted with sarcopenia related causes, pathogeneses, prevention and control measures. The maximum isometric strength of bilateral iliopsoas, quadriceps femoris, tibialis anterior muscle, hamstrings; the time for 5 sitting-up tests and Time Up and Go Test (TUGT), one-leg standing time with closed eyes test; and the score of Berg balance scale were compared between the two groups.

RESULTSCompared with before treatment, muscle strength increased in the TJQ group with an average increased capacity (rate) as follows, bilateral iliopsoas 5.5 kg (16.9%), quadriceps femoris 5.5 kg (26.2%), and tibialis anterior muscle 8.5 kg (36.2%) (all P < 0.05). The time for TUGT and 5 sitting-up tests was shortened by 1.3 s (16.7%) and 0.9 s (14.5%) respectively in the TJQ group. The time for one-leg standing time with closed eyes test was increased by 8.4 s (left) and 9.1 s (right) respectively. The score of Berg balance scale increased by 4.3% (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, bilateral quadriceps femoris and tibialis anterior muscle strength increased significantly (P < 0.01); the time for TUGT and 5 sitting-up tests, the time for one-leg standing time with closed eyes test, scores of Berg balance scale were all improved in the TJQ group after intervention (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONTJQ training could improve strength of iliopsoas, quadriceps femoris, tibialis anterior muscle in the aged, elevate their balance and locomotor activities, and possibly prevent and treat sarcopenia.

Objective To investigate the effects of local wet hyperthermia combined with microwave ablationon tumor growth and serum levels of interferon-β(IFN-β)and interleukine-12(IL-12).Methods An experimental mouse model beating mammary carcinoma was established in Balb/c mice and then treated with microwave ablation after 14 d.Seven d after ablation,local wet hyperthermia was administered once weekly for 2 weeks.Tumor growth and lung metastasis,as well as the survival of bearing tumor mice were observed.The serum levels of IFN-β and IL-12 were detected with enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay(ELISA). Results When local wet hyperthermia was combined with microwave ablation tumor growth and lung metastasis were significantly less than when microwave ablation or local wet hyperthermia was used alone(P＜0.05).Furthermore,the survival of bearing tumor mice in combined therapy group prolonged significantly compared with those receiving either therapy alone(P＜0.05).Serum levels of IFN-β and IL-12 were also significantly higher in combined therapy group compared with the other groups (P＜0.05). Conclusions Local wet hyperthermia combined with microwave ablation is more effective than either local wet hyperthermia or microwave ablation alone in retarding tumor growth,which may be related to the enhanced immune response.

Objective To summarize the nursing experience of combination therapy of highly agglutinative staphylococcin (HASL) with cisplatin for patients with malignant pleural effusions. Methods After fully draining of pleural fluid in 62 cases with malignant pleural effusion through pleural puncture through central venous catheters and simply suction bottles, we injected HASL and cisplatin into the patients' pleural cavities. During the therapeutic process, firstly, we drained the pleural fluid fully before injection, secondly, we directed the patients to cooperate well and alter the positions properly, and thirdly, we closely observed the patients' condition and adverse reactions. Results 54 of 62 cases were effective after the therapies. The effective rate was 87.1%.Conclusions In order to achieve a satisfled curative effect and reduce the adverse reactions, we need the cooperation of the patients, fully draining of the pleural fluid before injection and proper alternation of the patients' positions during the treatment process.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography(UHPLC) method for simultaneous determination of berberine hydrochloride, phellodendrine hydrochloride, palmatine hydrochloride, magnoflorine, and rhizoma atractylodis in Ermiao pills. METHODS: The UHPLC analyses were performed on a Waters BEH C18 column (2.1 mm×100 mm, 1.7 μm)eluted with acetonitrile and 0.1% phosphoric acid(each 100 mL containing 0.1 g sodium dodecyl sulfate). The flow rate was 0.3 mL·min-1, the detection wavelength was set at 280 and 340 nm, and the column temperature was set at 30℃. RESULTS: The calibration curves of the five compositions had good linear relationship in the ranges of the tested concentrations. The precision, stability and repeatability complied with the requirements of methodology. The recoveries were between 96.8%-99.3% respectively. The RSDs were below 2.8%. CONCLUSION: The developed method is simple, sensitive, rapid and accurate. This work provides helpful information for the comprehensive quality evaluation of Ermiao pills.

To study the expression and significance of CD44 splice variant V6 in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. The expression levels of CD44v6 protein were determined immunohistochemically in 40 squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue specimens (24 non metastatic primary tumors and 16 metastatic lymph nodes), 12 squamous cell papilloma and 9 normal tongue mucosa using murine exon V6 specific monoclonal antibody.
