OBJECTIVETo measure the diameter of T4 pedicle-rib compomers in normal human spines and discuss the importance of related dates.
METHODST4 computerized tomography (CT) images, including two-dimensional,three-dimensional reconstruction, of 12 random adult patients were harvested. There were 7 males and 5 females with a mean age of 23 years (ranged, 19 to 28 years). The patients were divided into groups by self control, which means the diameter of pedicle compared with that of pedicle-rib unit in the same side of each T4. The facility was GE light speed 16. Measurement of the body specimens from T3 to T5 . The parameter included the width of pedicle-rib unit compared with pedicle, the longitudinal diameter of pedicle-rib unit compared with pedicle, especially for the pedicle-rib overlap.
RESULTSThe relationship of T4 pedicle and rib were not on the same level but overlapping. The width of pedicle-rib unit was significantly larger than that of pedicle (P<0.05). The longitudinal diameters of pedicle-rib unit or pedicle were significantly larger than those of pedicle-rib overlap (P<0.05); while there was no significantly difference between the pedicle-rib unit and pedicle (P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe overlapping relationship of T4 pedicle and rib is partly but not whole, which means the longitudinal diameter of T4 pedicle-rib overlap should not be considered as the same of unit or pedicle.

Background: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a major disease burden. Wild?type p53?induced phosphatase 1 (Wip1) has been studied extensively in the context of cancer and the regulation of different types of stem cells, but the role of Wip1 in cardiac adaptation to MI is unknown. We investigated the significance of Wip1 in a mouse model of MI. Methods:The study began in June 2014 and was completed in July 2016.We compared Wip1?knockout (Wip1?KO) mice and wild?type (WT) mice to determine changes in cardiac function and survival in response to MI. The heart weight/body weight (HW/BW) ratio and cardiac function were measured before MI. Mouse MI was established by ligating the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery under 1.5%isoflurane anesthesia.After MI, survival of the mice was observed for 4 weeks. Cardiac function was examined by echocardiography. The HW/BW ratio was analyzed, and cardiac hypertrophy was measured by wheat germ agglutinin staining. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining was used to determine the infarct size. Gene expression of interleukin?6 (IL?6), tumor necrosis factor?α (TNF-α), and interleukin?1β (IL-1β) was assessed by quantitative real?time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and the levels of signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (stat3) and phosphor?stat3 (p?stat3) were also analyzed by Western blotting. Kaplan?Meier survival analysis, log?rank test, unpaired t?test, and one?way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for statistical analyses. Results: Wip1?KO mice had a marginally increased HW/BW ratio and slightly impaired cardiac function before LAD ligation. After MI, Wip1?deficient mice exhibited increased mortality (57.14% vs. 29.17%; n = 24 [WT], n = 35 [Wip1?KO], P < 0.05), increased cardiac hypertrophy (HW/BW ratio: 7 days: 7.25 ± 0.36 vs. 5.84 ± 0.18, n = 10, P < 0.01, and 4 weeks: 6.05 ± 0.17 vs. 5.87 ± 0.24, n = 10, P > 0.05;cross?sectional area: 7 days: 311.80 ± 8.29 vs. 268.90 ± 11.15, n = 6, P < 0.05, and 4 weeks: 308.80 ± 11.26 vs. 317.00 ± 13.55, n = 6, P > 0.05), and reduced cardiac function (ejection fraction: 7 days: 29.37 ± 1.38 vs. 34.72 ± 1.81, P < 0.05, and 4 weeks: 19.06 ± 2.07 vs. 26.37 ± 2.95, P < 0.05; fractional shortening: 7 days: 13.72 ± 0.71 vs. 16.50 ± 0.94, P < 0.05, and 4 weeks: 8.79 ± 1.00 vs. 12.48 ± 1.48, P < 0.05; n = 10 [WT], n = 15 [Wip1?KO]). H&E staining revealed a larger infarct size in Wip1?KO mice than in WT mice (34.79% ± 2.44% vs. 19.55% ± 1.48%, n = 6, P < 0.01). The expression of IL?6 and p?stat3 was downregulated in Wip1?KO mice (IL?6: 1.71 ± 0.27 vs. 4.46 ± 0.79, n = 6, P < 0.01; and p?stat3/stat3: 1.15 ± 0.15 vs. 1.97 ± 0.23, n = 6, P < 0.05). Conclusion: The results suggest that Wip1 could protect the heart from MI?induced ischemic injury.

BACKGROUNDIt is important to choose an appropriate antiepileptic drug (AED) to manage partial epilepsy. Traditional AEDs, such as carbamazepine (CBZ) and valproate (VPA), have been proven to have good therapeutic effects. However, in recent years, a variety of new AEDs have increasingly been used as first-line treatments for partial epilepsy. As the studies regarding the effectiveness of new drugs and comparisons between new AEDs and traditional AEDs are few, it is determined that these are areas in need of further research. Accordingly, this study investigated the long-term effectiveness of six AEDs used as monotherapy in patients with partial epilepsy.
METHODSThis is a retrospective, long-term observational study. Patients with partial epilepsy who received monotherapy with one of six AEDs, namely, CBZ, VPA, topiramate (TPM), oxcarbazepine (OXC), lamotrigine (LTG), or levetiracetam (LEV), were identified and followed up from May 2007 to October 2014, and time to first seizure after treatment, 12-month remission rate, retention rate, reasons for treatment discontinuation, and adverse effects were evaluated.
RESULTSA total of 789 patients were enrolled. The median time of follow-up was 56.95 months. CBZ exhibited the best time to first seizure, with a median time to first seizure of 36.06 months (95% confidential interval: 30.64-44.07). CBZ exhibited the highest 12-month remission rate (85.55%), which was significantly higher than those of TPM (69.38%, P = 0.006), LTG (70.79%, P = 0.001), LEV (72.54%, P = 0.005), and VPA (73.33%, P = 0.002). CBZ, OXC, and LEV had the best retention rate, followed by LTG, TPM, and VPA. Overall, adverse effects occurred in 45.87% of patients, and the most common adverse effects were memory problems (8.09%), rashes (7.76%), abnormal hepatic function (6.24%), and drowsiness (6.24%).
CONCLUSIONThis study demonstrated that CBZ, OXC, and LEV are relatively effective in managing focal epilepsy as measured by time to first seizure, 12-month remission rate, and retention rate.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of ClpE on the protein expression profiles of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
METHODSclpE-deficient Streptococcus pneumoniae strain was constructed by long flanking homology-polymerase chain reaction (LFH-PCR) and identified by PCR and sequencing. The total bacterial proteins were analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and imaging analysis, and the differentially expressed protein spots were excised by dot-gel digestion with trypsin. Peptide mass fingerprinting (PMF) was obtained by analysis of the fragment length by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). The PMF was analyzed using software to identify the proteins.
RESULTSThe number of matched protein spots of the two gels was 61%. By sequence database searching, 4 out of the 17 differential protein spots were identified, namely hypoxanthine-guanine, pyrrolidone-carboxylate peptidase1, formate-tetrahydrofolate ligase, and bifunctional protein pyrR.
CONCLUSIONclpE gene-deficient Streptococcus pneumoniae expresses fewer kinds of proteins at also lower levels than the wild-type bacteria, suggesting that ClpE allows the bacteria to adapt to different host environments by inducing the expression of special proteins.
