1.Study on the current status of smoking, intention of tobacco concession and related risk factors among 18-65-year olds patients with chronic diseases in Beijing.

Objective: To understand the status, attitude and related risk factors on smoking among 18-65 years old patients with hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma in Beijing. Methods: Data was gathered from the 2014 Beijing Non-communicable and Chronic Disease Surveillance Program. Multiple classified cluster sampling method was used and 19 815 participants aged 18-65 were sampled from 16 districts in Beijing. Results: Among all the 18 405 participants, male hypertensive patients showed a higher rate on current smoking than the other groups (χ(2)=17.695, P<0.001). Male patients with dyslipidemia had higher current smoking rate than the other groups (χ(2)=39.292, P<0.001). However, female patients with COPD or with asthma showed higher rate on current smoking than the other groups (χ(2)=6.276, P=0.012), (χ(2)=8.245, P=0.004). Among the smokers, hypertensive patients presented lower rate (χ(2)=20.487, P<0.001) on intention of smoking concession, than the other groups. Patients with COPD showed greater intention in quitting smoking (χ(2)=6.085, P=0.048), than the other groups. Male patients with diabetes (χ(2)=9.219, P=0.010) or dyslipidemia (χ(2)=13.513, P=0.001) who had stopped smoking tobacco appeared having higher rates in keeping the current status. Results from logistic regression analyses showed that smoking was the risk factor for hypertension (OR=1.17), dyslipidemia (OR=1.25), COPD (OR=1.78), and asthma (OR=1.57). Conclusions: Patients with certain kinds of chronic diseases showed higher rate of current smoking and lower rate of quitting. Cigarette consumption appeared an important risk factor for patients with hypertension, dyslipidemia, COPD, or asthma in Beijing.

2.One year after the implementation of 2015 Tobacco Control Regulation on persons aged 15 years and over tobacco use in Beijing.

Objective: To understand the current status of smoking and smoking cessation in persons aged 15 years and over in Beijing and evaluate the effect of 2015 Beijing Tobacco Control Regulation. Methods: In 2014 and 2016, based on the principles and methodology of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey. A total of 50 communities or townships were selected from 324 communities or townships in Beijing through multistage cluster sampling, and 2 community (village) committees from each community or township were selected with the method of probability proportional to size (PPS). A total of 100 surveillance sites were set, and 100 households were selected from each surveillance site by using simple random sampling. Data were collected through face-to-face interview from the eligible family members aged 15 years and over with the assistance of a tablet computer. Statistical analyses were conducted by using complex sampling analyses module of SPSS 20.0, with weights as a combination of sampling weights, non-response weights and post- stratification weights, for the calculation of current smoking prevalence, daily smoking prevalence, smoking cessation rate, etc. Results: A total of 8 484 and 9 372 valid questionnaires were obtained, respectively, in 2014 and 2016, with the response rate of 86.5% and 96.5%. The current smoking prevalence in persons aged 15 years and over was 23.4% in 2014, and 22.3% in 2016. According to the 6(th) national census data, the current smoking population decreased by 199 000 in Beijing. The proportion of daily smokers declined from 20.7% in 2014 to 19.2% in 2016. The daily number of cigarettes consumed by current smokers increased from 14.6 in 2014 to 15.4 in 2016. The smoking cessation rate was 14.9% in 2014 and 16.8% in 2016. The proportion of current smokers who had at least one smoking cessation attempt in the past 12 months increased from 22.3% in 2014 to 23.2% in 2016, and the proportion of current smokers who planned to quit smoking increased from 11.6% to 15.5%. Among the current smokers who had visited doctors in the past 12 months, the proportion of those having smoking cessation advice was 58.9% in 2014 and 59.2% in 2016. In 2016, among the current smokers who had attempted to quit in the past 12 months, 36.8% were aware of the smoking cessation clinics, and 29.5%were aware of the quitline. Among those who were aware, only 7.7% had actually visited the cessation clinics, and 5.5% had used the quitline. Conclusions: After the implementation of 2015 Beijing Tobacco Control Regulation for 1 year, the current smoking prevalence in persons aged 15 years and over showed decreasing. It is necessary to further prompt the expansion of smoking cessation service to cover more current smokers.

3.Delayed hemorrhage after microvascular decompression in a hemifacial spasm patient associated with neurosyphilis

Microvascular decompression is an effective treatment for hemifacial spasm. Hemorrhage is oneof the complications of microvascular decompression. However, delayed hemorrhage is very rare.Here, we report a case of ipsilateral cerebellar hemorrhage at day seven following microvasculardecompression. A 45-year-old woman presented with left HFS for the previous two years. Diagnostictesting demonstrated the presence of neurosyphilis. Brain magnetic resonance image was unremarkableon presentation. She received microvascular decompression and her hemifacial spasm completelyresolved after surgery. At day seven post-operatively, the patient presented with a sudden onsetheadache. Emergency computed tomography scan showed a cerebellar hemorrhage. A suboccipitalcraniotomy was performed and a cerebellar hematoma was evacuated. The delayed hemorrhage wasattributed to possible microaneurysm from syphilis.
4.Intracranial hemorrhage from metastatic CNS lymphoma: A case report and literature review

Metastatic brain lymphomas, which belong to secondary central nervous system lymphomas, usually originate from primary tumors of the bone marrow, testis, or orbit. Gastrointestinal lymphomas commonly metastasize to the lung or heart. We report here a case of brain hemorrhage due to metastasis from primary gastrointestinal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). A 30-year-old male presented with headache. He was diagnosed to have gastrointestinal lymphoma 6 months earlier, and treated with gastrointestinal surgery. Pathological diagnosis was DLBCL. A PET-CT scan immediately after gastrointestinal surgery demonstrated no brain metastasis. On admission to the ward, imaging of the brain showed right temporoparietal hematoma. In the ward, the patient deteriorated with impaired consciousness. Repeat brain imaging showed enlargement of the hematoma. He underwent right temporoparietal craniotomy for the removal of a hematoma, and tumor nodules adherent to the cortex was found. Pathology confirmed a metastatic DLBCL in the brain. Literature review showed that this was the first reported case of brain hemorrhage from metastatic lymphoma. Metastatic central nervous system lymphoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis in patients with a history of gastrointestinal lymphoma presenting with neurological symptoms.
5.Longitudinal study on catch-up growth in preterm infants with small for gestational age at corrected ages 0-24 months.

OBJECTIVES:
To understand the growth and development status and differences between small for gestational age (SGA) and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) preterm infants during corrected ages 0-24 months, and to provide a basis for early health interventions for preterm infants.
METHODS:
A retrospective study was conducted, selecting 824 preterm infants who received regular health care at the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center from July 2019 to July 2022, including 144 SGA and 680 AGA infants. The growth data of SGA and AGA groups at birth and corrected ages 0-24 months were analyzed and compared.
RESULTS:
The SGA group had significantly lower weight and length than the AGA group at corrected ages 0-18 months (P<0.05), while there were no significant differences between the two groups at corrected age 24 months (P>0.05). At corrected age 24 months, 85% (34/40) of SGA and 79% (74/94) of AGA preterm infants achieved catch-up growth. Stratified analysis by gestational age showed that there were significant differences in weight and length at corrected ages 0-9 months between the SGA subgroup with gestational age <34 weeks and the AGA subgroups with gestational age <34 weeks and 34 weeks (P<0.05). In addition, the weight and length of the SGA subgroup with gestational age 34 weeks showed significant differences compared to the AGA subgroups with gestational age <34 weeks and 34 weeks at corrected ages 0-18 months and corrected ages 0-12 months, respectively (P<0.05). Catch-up growth for SGA infants with gestational age <34 weeks and 34 weeks mainly occurred at corrected ages 0-12 months and corrected ages 0-18 months, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS
SGA infants exhibit delayed early-life physical growth compared to AGA infants, but can achieve a higher proportion of catch-up growth by corrected age 24 months than AGA infants. Catch-up growth can be achieved earlier in SGA infants with a gestational age of <34 weeks compared to those with 34 weeks.

6.Clinical and genetic characteristics of children with primary dilated cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVES:
To study the genetic characteristics, clinical characteristics, and prognosis of children with primary dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).
METHODS:
A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 44 children who were diagnosed with DCM in Hebei Children's Hospital from July 2018 to February 2023. According to the genetic testing results, they were divided into two groups: gene mutation-positive group (n=17) and gene mutation-negative group (n=27). The two groups were compared in terms of clinical data at initial diagnosis and follow-up data.
RESULTS:
Among the 44 children with DCM, there were 21 boys (48%) and 23 girls (52%). Respiratory symptoms including cough and shortness of breath were the most common symptom at initial diagnosis (34%, 15/44). The detection rate of gene mutations was 39% (17/44). There were no significant differences between the two groups in clinical characteristics, proportion of children with cardiac function grade Ⅲ or Ⅳ, brain natriuretic peptide levels, left ventricular ejection fraction, and left ventricular fractional shortening at initial diagnosis (P>0.05). The median follow-up time was 23 months, and 9 children (20%) died, including 8 children from the gene mutation-positive group, among whom 3 had TTN gene mutation, 2 had LMNA gene mutation, 2 had TAZ gene mutation, and 1 had ATAD3A gene mutation. The gene mutation-positive group had a significantly higher mortality rate than the gene mutation-negative group (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
There is no correlation between the severity of DCM at initial diagnosis and gene mutations in children. However, children with gene mutations may have a poorer prognosis.

7.Dietary Protein Intake in a Multi-ethnic Asian Population of Healthy Participants and Chronic Kidney Disease Patients.

INTRODUCTIONClinical practice guidelines recommend different levels of dietary protein intake in predialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. It is unknown how effectively these recommendations perform in a multi-ethnic Asian population, with varied cultural beliefs and diets. We assess the profi le of protein intake in a multi-ethnic Asian population, comparing healthy participants and CKD patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODSWe analysed the 24-hour urine collections of the Asian Kidney Disease Study (AKDS) and the Singapore Kidney Function Study (SKFS) to estimate total protein intake (TPI; g/day). We calculated ideal body weight (IDW; kg): 22.99 × height2 (m). Standard statistical tests were applied where appropriate, and linear regression was used to assess associations of continuous variables with protein intake.
RESULTSThere were 232 CKD patients and 103 healthy participants with 35.5% diabetics. The mean TPI in healthy participants was 58.89 ± 18.42 and the mean TPI in CKD patients was 53.64 ± 19.39. By US National Kidney Foundation (NKF) guidelines, 29/232 (12.5%) of CKD patients with measured glomerular filtration rate (GFR) <25 (in mL/min/1.73 m2) had a TPI-IDW of <0.6 g/kg/day. By Caring for Australasians with Renal Impairment (CARI) guidelines, 76.3% (177/232) of CKD patients had TPI-IDW >0.75g/kg/ day. By American Dietetic Association (ADA) guidelines, 34.7% (44/127) of CKD patients with GFR <50 had TPI-IDW between 0.6 to 0.8 g/kg/day. Only 1/6 non-diabetic CKD patients with GFR <20 had a protein intake of between 0.3 to 0.5 g/kg/day. A total of 21.9% (25/114) of diabetic CKD patients had protein intake between 0.8 to 0.9 g/kg/day.
CONCLUSIONOn average, the protein intake of most CKD patients exceeds the recommendations of guidelines. Diabetic CKD patients should aim to have higher protein intakes.

8.Dscam mutation leads to hydrocephalus and decreased motor function.

The nervous system is one of the most complicated organ systems in invertebrates and vertebrates. Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule (DSCAM) of the immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily is expressed widely in the nervous system during embryonic development. Previous studies in Drosophila suggest that Dscam plays important roles in neural development including axon branching, dendritic tiling and cell spacing. However, the function of the mammalian DSCAM gene in the formation of the nervous system remains unclear. Here, we show that Dscam ( del17 ) mutant mice exhibit severe hydrocephalus, decreased motor function and impaired motor learning ability. Our data indicate that the mammalian DSCAM gene is critical for the formation of the central nervous system.

9.Experience of radiofrequency ablation on liver malignancies: a report of 803 cases.

OBJECTIVETo summarize the 8-year experience of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) on liver malignancies and explore the effect and prognostic factors.
METHODSFrom August 1999 to February 2007, 803 patients with liver malignancies, among which there were 672 with primary liver cancer (PLC) and 131 with liver metastasis, were treated with RFA. There were 781 cases who were performed percutaneously under the guidance of ultrasound, 8 cases under CT, 9 cases with laparoscopy and 5 cases with laparotomy. And there were 117 cases who were treated by RFA combined with percutaneous ethanol injection and 108 cases by RFA combined with trans-catheter arterial chemoembolization.
RESULTSIn the treatment of all the 803 patients with liver malignancies, the mortality was 0.25%, the rate of severe complications was 0.37%. The rate of complete ablation was 92.5%, the loco-recurrence rate was 13.8% and the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-year survivals were 95.1%, 85.6%, 75.7%, 60.7% and 47.5%, respectively. For the 672 patients with PLCs, the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-year survivals with stage Ia (Chinese staging system) were 97.8%, 91.5%, 84.6%, 77.1% and 61.9%, respectively, with stage Ib were 93.9%, 83.7%, 69.8%, 45.1% and 42.2%, respectively, with stage II were 86.2%, 67.3%, 47.3%, 17.2% and 0, respectively, and the 1, 2-year survivals with stage III were 67.8% and 0, respectively (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONSRFA is a safe and effective method for liver malignancy, and the tumor size and stage are important prognostic factors.

Mutations in the Fused in sarcoma/Translated in liposarcoma gene (FUS/TLS, FUS) have been identified among patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). FUS protein aggregation is a major pathological hallmark of FUS proteinopathy, a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by FUS-immunoreactive inclusion bodies. We prepared transgenic Drosophila expressing either the wild type (Wt) or ALS-mutant human FUS protein (hFUS) using the UAS-Gal4 system. When expressing Wt, R524S or P525L mutant FUS in photoreceptors, mushroom bodies (MBs) or motor neurons (MNs), transgenic flies show age-dependent progressive neural damages, including axonal loss in MB neurons, morphological changes and functional impairment in MNs. The transgenic flies expressing the hFUS gene recapitulate key features of FUS proteinopathy, representing the first stable animal model for this group of devastating diseases.
