Ginsenosides in the decoction of Radix Ginseng, Radix Ginseng with Flos Lonicerae, Radix Polygoni Multiflori or Radix Astragali have been investigated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometric method (ESI-MS). Change of the content of ginsenosides was nonlinear in diverse combinative proportion of Radix Ginseng with Flos Lonicerae, while the stripping of ginsenosides was promoted by a small amount of Radix Polygoni Multiflori. In the combinative decoction of Radix Ginseng with Radix Astragali, ginsenosides contents were increased compared to single decoction of Radix Ginseng. Besides, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) method was developed for determination of the total antioxidative activity of n-butanol and water-soluble extracts from the decoction. The experimental results showed that antioxidative activity was better in the combinative decoction than that in single decoction, and the FRAP values of n-butanol extract were also greater compared with that of water extract.

OBJECTIVETo study the influence of the quorum sensing inhibitor brominated furanone on Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) biofilm formation.
METHODSDoubling dilution method was used to determine the minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of brominated furanone on P. gingivalis. Absolute ethyl alcohol added in P. gingivalis bacterial suspension was used as the negative control, while P. gingivalis bacterial suspension as blank control. The influences of 1/4MIC, 1/2MIC, MIC, 2MIC of brominated furanone on P. gingivalis biofilm formation were studied by the optical density determination and scanning electron microscope (SEM).
RESULTSFour groups of brominated furanone with different concentrations were shown to inhibit P. gingivalis biofilm formation. With the increased concentration of brominated furanone, optical density of P. gingivalis suspension decreased. The biofilm structures of 1/4MIC group, 1/2MIC group and MIC group were loose. Only scattered P. gingivalis cells but no biofilm structure was seen in 2MIC group.
CONCLUSIONBrominated furanone could inhibit P. gingivalis biofilm formation without the influence on bacterial growth. The future application of this chemical compound may provide a new possibility for the antimicrobial treatment of periodontal disease.

Objective To investigate the prognostic sequelae in neontes with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and ven-tricnlar dilatation. Methods Seventy-six full term newborns infants with HIE were followed up at the age from 3 to 19 months after therapy. Twenty-five infants among them were followed up by telephone in the epidemic period of SARS.Results Among 76 infants of 88 newborn infants with HIE(84.6%), 73 infants were normal (96.1% ). 1 infant had cerebral palsy (1.3%), 2 infants died (2.6 %).Among 39 cases with mild HIE, none of them had cerebral sequelae; among moderate HIE. 1 infant had cerebral palsy (2.9%) 1 infant died (2. 9 %), interlenkin-4 among severe HIE 50 % died (P00.5 The poor outcome of HIE in those infants were related to intrauterine growth retardation, severe birth asphyxia;and inadequate treatment.Cranial ultra-sonography of 49 infants were done on follow-up,and 12 of them (24.5 % ) had ventricular dilatations, which appeared after birth with 6 infants. Others occurred on follow-up with 1 infant had cerobral palsy, all ventricular dilatations recovered to normal at 12- 19 months except the cerebral palsy. Conclusions The poor outcome of HIE depends on the infants with intranterine growth relarda-tion,severe birth asphyxia and inadequate treatment. The prognosis of transient ventrealar ddatation are good except cerebral palsy.J Appl Clin pediatr,2004,19(12) : 1045- 1047
