BACKGROUND: Peri-implant crestal bone resorption is considered as a normal reaction according to traditional butt-joint prosthesis around two-piece implants. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate bone loss around two-piece implants restored according to the platform switching concept in the posterior area of the mandible. METHODS: Eighty-eight implants were consecutively placed in 50 patients following submerged surgical protocol. In the test group, 40 Ankylos implants were placed using platform switching technique, while 48 3i implants using traditional butt-joint in the control group. All the implants were positioned at the crestal level. Definitive prosthesis was delivered after 3 months. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: All implants were judged to be successfully osseointegrated. The success rate was 100%. Twelve months after restoration, radiographic analysis showed an average bone reduction level of (0.31±0.39) mm in the test group that was statistically significantly different (P < 0.01) from the average reduction in the control group [(0.94±0.43) mm]. In the follow-up time, no implants were loose or lost and healthy gingival was seen. These findings show that the platform switching technique can reduce peri-implant crestal bone resorption and preserve alveolar bone level around dental implants 12 months after restoration.Oral Implantology Center, Affiliated Hospital of Medical College, Qingdao University, Qingdao 266003, Shandong Province, China

BACKGROUND:Soft tissue engineering mainly includes seed cells, scaffolds, cytokines and bioreactors, among which, the scaffolds are the key link in the construction of tissue-engineered cartilage.OBJECTIVE:To prepare an articular cartilage extracellular matrix/human umbilical cord Wharton gel porous scaffold, and to evaluate its physicochemical properties and biocompatibility.METHODS:The articular cartilage extracellular matrix/human umbilical cord Wharton gel porous scaffold was prepared by freeze thawing drying method using porcine articular cartilage extracellular matrix and human umbilical cord Wharton glue as raw materials. The porosity, water absorption, tissue composition and longitudinal compressive elastic modulus of the scaffold were measured and histologically stained.Rabbit chondrocytes were co-cultured with the articular cartilage extracellular matrix/human umbilical cord Wharton gel porous scaffold for 7 days. Then, scanning electron microscopy,live-dead cell staining and hematoxylin-eosin staining were performed. In addition, rabbit chondrocytes were cultured in the extract of the articular cartilage extracellular matrix/human umbilical cord Wharton gel porous scaffold and cell culture medium for 6 days, respectively;and MTT assay was used to detect cell proliferation.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The articular cartilage extracellular matrix/human umbilical cord Wharton gel porous scaffolds had a cross-section of uniform porous network structure and a vertical cross-section of the vertical tubular structure, and the pore wall was densely covered with cartilage fibers. The composite porous scaffold was positive for hematoxylin-eosin staining, safranin O staining and toluidine blue staining, and contained collagen and glycosaminoglycan ingredients. The water absorption, porosity and longitudinal compressive elastic modulus of the scaffolds were (17.418 8±0.909 0)%,(81.495 1±6.621 0)% and (2.833 3±0.456 4) kPa,respectively. After 7 days of co-culture,rabbit chondrocytes adhered to the scaffold and proliferated, and further grew into the pores of the scaffold. Moreover, the scaffold was non-toxic to the rabbit chondrocytes. To conclude, the physiochemical properties and biochemical components of articular cartilage extracellular matrix/human umbilical cord Wharton gel porous scaffolds are similar to those of natural cartilage, and the scaffold has good biocompatibility.

Objective To investigate the family burden of patients with severe mental illness. Methods 148 patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were assessed with Family Burden Scale of disease (FBS). Results Family burden broadly exists among those patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and the burden tends to involve several dimensions, including family relations (51%), home entertainment (50%), daily routine (45%), economic burden (43%), mental health of family members (36%) and physical health of family members (32%). Conclusion Integrated psychological and social intervention should be made to reduce the family burden of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Severe tick infestation was found in a hare in a suburban area of Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China. We sampled ticks and identified them based on their morphologic characteristics. Three species, Ixodes sinensis, which is commonly found in China and can experimentally transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, and Haemaphysalis longicornis which can transmit Lyme disease were detected with an optical microscope and a stereomicroscope. Risk of spreading ticks from suburban to urban areas exists due to human transportation and travel between the infested and non-infested areas around Nanchang.

Objective:
To discuss the clinical application and effects of domestic external fixator in the treatment of patients with malformations of limbs.
Methods:
A total of 7 289 patients with malformation of limbs who had been operated in Qin Sihe orthopedic surgery team from January 1989 to June 2016 were retrospective analyzed. The patients were treated with domestic external fixator, including 4 033 males and 3 256 females, aging from 2 to 82 years with a mean age of 23.4 years. There were 2 732 patients using Ilizarov external fixator, 4 713 patients using hybrid external fixator, 57 patients using monobrachial external fixator, 232 patients using Ilizarov external fixator and hybrid external fixator. The Ilizarov, hybrid and monobrachial external fixator were used in 67, 65 and 0 patients on the upper limbs and in 2 665, 4 616 and 57 patients on the lower limbs. There were 3 028 patients operated on the left limbs, 3 260 patients operated on the right limbs and 1 001 patients operated on the bilateral limbs. The top three types of diseases were sequelae of poliomyelitis, cerebral palsy and post-traumatic stress disorder peromely. Deformity types inclued talipes equinovarus, knee flexion deformity, cavus foot and so on.
Results:
All the patients were followed up for a period of 2.5 months to 22.4 years, with an average follow-up time of 5.4 years. All of the external fixators were used for single once, and there was no substitute for external fixator quality problem. All the patients were completed surgery goal until removing external fixation except 1 patient gave up treatment and 1 removed the fixator because of metal allergy. The common complications included wire or pin infection and joint movement limitation and so on.
Conclusions
The domestic external fixator developed and produced based on the characteristics of Chinese limb deformity disability. The domestic external fixator can be used to treat kinds of limb deformities with the advantages of practical, economical, adjustable, universal and portable. The domestic external fixator could meet the clinical demand for fixation of the osteotomy end of the limbs, the correction of the deformity, the repair of the defects and the limb lengthening.

Ma-huang Lian-yao Chi-xiao-dou Tang is one of the three formulas for typhoid jaundice. But it has not received much attention, and the source of Lian-yao in the formula is unknown and the status and role are difficult to identify. In this paper,we first analyzed the functions of Ephedra and the symptoms of the whole formula. The formula was mainly used to"clear damp-heat"in order to remove jaundice. On this basis,it is proved that Lian-yao is the root of Forsythia,not"Qiao-gen".Today,the use of Forsythia instead of Lian-yao has the same effect. Then, the indispensable and important position of Forsythia in the formula was analyzed. It also pointed out some valuable directions for the medicinal use and research and development of Forsythia based on its wide range of effects but the lack of main symptoms. This paper provides insights for in-depth theoretical and practical research on Forsythiae Fructus.
