OBJECTIVETo explore the clinical efficacy and the effect mechanism of hooking therapy and safflower injection in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH).
METHODSSixty patients of LDH were randomized into an observation group and a control group at ratio of 1 to 1, 30 cases in each one. In the control group, safflower injection was applied to three points of lumbar region, once a day. Seven treatments made one session, and totally 2 sessions were required. In the observation group, under local anesthesia, the big hook needle was used to stimulate the three points of lumbar region first, followed by the safflower injection, once every 6 to 7 days. If the efficacy was not satisfactory enough, the second treatment was given. The visual analogue scale (VAS) and the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (M-JOA) scores were observed before and after treatment in the patients of the two groups and the clinical efficacy was evaluated. The levels of peripheral interleukin-6 (IL-6) and nitric oxide (NO) were determined.
RESULTSVAS and M-JOA scores were all improved apparently after treatment as compared with those before treatment in the patients of the two groups (both P < 0.01). The improvements in the observation group were much more obvious than those in the control group (both P < 0.01). In the observation group, the curative and remarkably effective rate was 76.7% (23/30) and the total effective rate was 96.7% (29/ 30), better than 43.3% (13/30) and 70.0% (21/30) in the control group separately (both P < 0.05). After treatment, the levels of IL-6 and NO were all reduced as compared with those before treatment in the two groups; (both P < 0.01). The above indices were changed more obviously in the observation group as compared with those in the control group (both P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONThe combined therapy of hooking therapy and safflower injection apparently relieves pain and clinical symptoms of LDH. The effect mechanism is relevant with reducing the levels of IL-6 and NO in the peripheral blood.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of Xinfeng Capsule (XFC), a compound Chinese herbal medicine, on behaviors and myocardial ultrastructure in adjuvant arthritis (AA) rats. METHODS: Fifty-five rats were randomly divided into normal control group, untreated group, methotrexate (MTX) group, Tripterygium wilfordii glycosides tablet (TGT) group and XFC group. There were 11 rats in each group. Except for those in the normal control group, the rats in the other groups were all intracutaneously given 0.1 ml Freund's complete adjuvant in the right hind limb. Changes of behaviors and myocardial ultrastructure of the rats in different groups were observed. RESULTS: Voix pedis' swelling and arthritis index in XFC, MTX and TPT groups were all obviously improved as compared with the untreated group. After XFC treatment, the autonomic activities were obviously increased, number of errors in exercise period and test period were obviously decreased, step-down latency (SDL) was lengthened and escape latency (EL) was shortened. Overall structure of myocardial myofibril and the majority of cristae was intact in XFC group. The effects of XFC in improving the behaviors and myocardial ultrastructure were better than those of MTX and TPT. CONCLUSION: Changes of behaviour and myocardial ultrastructure of AA rats can be observed. XFC can improve the myocardial ultrastructure of AA rats as well as their behaviors.

Objective To study the effects of mild hypothermia on cognitive function , synapsinⅠexpression and synaptic ultrastructure of hippocampus in epileptic rats induced by global cerebral ischemia. Methods Forty-eight male SD rats were randomly divided into control (NC) group, sham-operated (Sham) group, normothermic epilepsy (NT) group and mild hypothermic epilepsy (HT) group. The model of postischemic audio-genetic seizure was established by chest compression. Hypothermia intervention was given to HT group. Immunocytochemistry was conducted to detect the expressions of synapsin I in hippocampus at days 1 , 3, 14. the synaptic ultrastructure and cognitive function were respectively observed by electron microscope and Morris water maze. Results Compared with NC and Sham group, the expression of synapsinI in NT group was decreased, the escape latency was prolonged and across platform number decreased (P < 0.05). The synapses were decreased in number, and mitochondria was viewed swelling, synaptic membranes unclear, myelin fractured. Compared with NT group, the expression of synapsinⅠin HT group had no obvious change in 24 h but was significantly increased in days 3 and 14 (P < 0.01); The escape latency was decreased and the number of cross platform increased (P < 0.01); Synaptic structure was clear, with interface growing and postsynaptic density thickened. Conclusion Mild hypothermia may improve the cognitive function of the epileptic rats induced by global cerebral ischemia by upregulating the expression of synapsinⅠand alleviating the damage of synaptic structure.

The structure, karyotype and behavior of synaptonemal complex (SC) in the spermatocytes of hedgehog (Erinaceus euroaaus dealbatus (insectivora)) were analyzed by light and electron microscopy with a modified surface spread preparation which involves the use of sodium dodecyl-sulphate (SDS) and silver staining. The lateral elements of the synaptonemal complex have a constant width of about 50 nm, the distance between the two lateral elements is about 100 nm. The relative length and arm rationale constant for each autosomal SC. The relative length and arm ratio constant for ea of the autosomal SCs are very similar to that of mitotic autosome. The X and Y chromosome axes have a clear morphological distinction from the autosomal SC. The axes of X and Y chromosome pair and form a SC of certain length at pachytene stage. The axes of unpaired X and Y chromosome are heteropycnotic and display various morphological complexities. But these differentiations in hedgehog are primary than in other mammalians, such as human and mice. At pachytene stage the X and Y chromosome display an extensive side-by-side pairing segment with decreasing length as meiotic prophase progressed.

Objective To observe the postconditioning cardioprotective effects of atorvastatin (ATV) on ischemia-re?perfusion injury in isolated rat heart, and the role of phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase , protein kinase B(PI3K-Akt), mitochon?drial ATP-sensitive potassium (mito-KATP channel) and mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) thereof. Meth?ods Healthy male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 9 groups:ischemia reperfusion (I/R) control group, atorvastatin postconditioning (ATV) group, ATV plus PI3K inhibitor LY294002 (ATV+LY294002) group, LY294002 group, ATV plus mi?to-KATP channel inhibitor 5-hydroxydecanoate (ATV+5-HD) group, 5-HD group, ATV plus mPTP inhibitor ATR (ATV+ATR) group, ATR group and ethanol group. Model rats were given 30-min ischemia followed by 120-min reperfusion. The myocardial infarction size, hemodynamic parameters, creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), nic?otinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and the expression of myocardial protein kinase B (Akt) and myocardial phospho-pro?tein kinase B (p-Akt) were evaluated. Results Compared with the control group, atorvastatin reduced the myocardial in?farction size, CK-MB and LDH(P<0.05), increased NAD+(P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the myocardi?al infarction size, CK-MB, LDH and NAD+between ATV+LY294002 group, ATV+5-HD group and ATV+ATR group. The hemodynamic parameters were improved in ATV group compared with those in control group. Western blot analysis con? firmed the significant phosphorylation of Akt in ATV group, ATV+5-HD group and ATV+ATR group compared with those of control group. There were no significant differences in the phosphorylation of Akt between ATV +LY294002 group, LY294002 group, ATR group and 5-HD group. Conclusion Atorvastatin postconditioning could attenuate the ischemia-re?perfusion injury through activating the PI3K-Akt, promoting mito-KATP channel opening and inhibiting mPTP opening.
