OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of local administration of recombinant adenovirus of human adiponectin (hAPN) Ad-hAPN-EGFP on tibial defect repair of SD rats.
METHODSTibial defect (2 mm) models of 36 SD rats (72 sides) were randomly divided into three groups (A, B, and C; n=24). The three groups were injected with Ad-hAPN-EGFP, Ad-EGFP, and normal saline, respectively, during operation and the day after operation. A week after the operation, the expression of hAPN and osteogenesis-related factors were detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Three weeks after operation, the tibias were examined by micro-computed tomography, hematoxylin-eosin staining, and Masson staining to evaluate the restoration of bone defects.
RESULTS1) The hAPN expression was detected in group A but not in groups B and C. Osteogenesis-related factors expression of group A was significantly higher than that of the other groups (P<0.05). 2) Osteogenesis (including bone mineral density, relative bone volume, trabecular number and trabecular thickness) in group A were more evident than those in groups B and C (P<0.05). No significant differences were found between groups B and C (P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONLocal administration of recombinant adenovirus Ad-hAPN-EGFP may be an effective strategy to improve the restoration of bone defects in vivo.

Objective:To carry out preoperative nutritional risk screening for inpatient to understand their nutritional risk status, and to explore the relationship between postoperative nutritional support and related clinical outcomes. Methods:A total of 378 patients in the Third Ward of Department of General Surgery, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University, completed NRS 2002 scoring within 48 h after admission. The patients with NRS scores more than 3 points were judged to have nutritional risk, and they were divided into nutrition support group (114 cases) and non-nutrition support group (60 cases) according to whether or not to accept the nutrition support.According to the doctor's advice, the data of nutrition support were obtained, the related clinical outcomes were recorded twice a week, and the relationship between them was analyzed. The influencing factors of hospitalization costs and infectious complications were analyzed. Results:Among the 378 inpatients, the nutritional risk rate was 50.53%.Of the 174 patients enrolled in the cohort study, the nutritional support rate was 65.52% (114/174).The difference of hospitalization time between the nutrition support group and the non-nutrition support group was statistically significant (P=0.028).There was no significant difference between the two groups in the hospitalization costs. The incidence of infectious complications (P=0.034) and the total complication rate (P=0.012) in the nutrition support group were lower than those in the non-nutrition support group.Disease score and nutrition support were the influencing factors of the incidence of infectious complications (P<0.10).Hospitalization days, disease score and nutrition score were the influencing factors of hospitalization costs (P<0.10).Conclusions:General surgery patients have higher nutrition risks, and nutrition support can reduce infectious complications, total complications and shorten hospital stay.NRS 2002 has a superior ability of predicting clinical outcomes.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the existence and extent of cognitive impairment in adult diabetes mellitus (DM) patients with episodes of recurrent severe hypoglycemia,by using meta-analysis to synthesize data across studies.PubMed,EMBASE and Cochrane library search engines were used to identify studies on cognitive performance in DM patients with recurrent severe hypoglycemia.Random-effects meta-analysis was performed on seven eligible studies using an inverse-variance method.Effect sizes, which are the standardized differences between the experimental group and the control group, were calculated.Of the 853 studies,7 studies met the inclusion criteria.Compared with control subjects, the adult DM patients with episodes of recurrent severe hypoglycemia demonstrated a significantly lowered performance on memory in both types of DM patients, and poor performance of processing speed in type 2 DM patients. There was no significant difference between adult DM patients with and those without severe hypoglycemia in other cognitive domains such as general intelligence, executive function, processing speed and psychomotor efficiency. Our results seem to confirm the hypothesis that cognitive dysfunction is characterized by worse memory and processing speed in adult DM patients with a history of recurrent severe hypoglycemia, whereas general intelligence, executive function, and psychomotor efficiency are spared.

The present study is to investigate the quality changes of ginseng stems and leaves before and after frost. The contents changes of ginsenoside, free amino acid, and total phenolic compounds, as well as DPPH radical scavenging effect before and after frost were measured. The content of 9 ginsenoside monomer in ginseng stems was decreased except for Rg, and Re after frost, but in ginseng leaves was all decreased. The total content of amino acids was decreased in ginseng stems after frost, while increased in ginseng leaves. The content of phenolic compounds in ginseng stems and leaves were both decreased after frost while the ability of DPPH radical scavenging was improved. The factor of frost has great impact on the quality of ginseng stems and leaves.

Objective To evaluate the clinical significance of epithelial cellular adhesion molecule (Ep-CAM)expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC).Methods The Ep-CAM expression was immunohistochemically investigated in 70 normal esophageal mucosas,SCCs and 72 lymph nodes. Results Ep-CAM expression was observed in 94.3% of the tumors, but no expression in the normal mucosa. The Ep- CAM expression was not significantly different between different tumor scales and tumors invading depths, its expression level was relevant with the tumors differentiation and lymph node metastases(P

AIMTo convenience of the methods for assaying red blood cell glycolysis without oxygen condition in the studies.
METHODSReagent kit of glucose, perchloric acid, visible light prismatic photometer, battle of nitrogen and rocking bed are used in the studies. The process includes 4 steps prepare Tris- HCI solution and so on, assay of red blood cell glycolysis without oxygen condition and account of glycolysis rate.
RESULTSHuman red blood cells stored at 4 degrees C for 75 d, in SOD solution, the glycolysis rate is 86.2% +/- 5.0%, distinctly better than GMA solution (39.2% +/- 8.9%).
CONCLUSIONThe methods of assaying glycolysis without oxygen condition not use Habea's apparatus. The operation is convenient and simple and its determinations can be performed in ordinary laboratory and is is accurate.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the expression of p120(ctn) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its correlation with the clinical and pathologic parameters.
METHODSImmunohistochemistry (S-P method) was used to detect the expression of p120(ctn) in 143 NSCLC cases. The variation of protein expression was further analyzed in 36 cases by Western blot. The correlation with clinical and pathologic parameters was studied.
RESULTSImmunohistochemically, normal bronchial cells showed membranous expression for p120(ctn), while NSCLC was characterized by cytoplasmic or diminished membranous staining. The rate of abnormal p120(ctn) expression was 79.7% (114/143). There was a significant correlation between abnormal expression of p120(ctn) and tumor differentiation, clinical stage, lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis (< 0.05), but not histologic typing. Western blot showed that the total amount of p120(ctn) in normal bronchial cells was significantly higher than that in NSCLC. The p120(ctn) isoform 1 (120,000) and isoform 3 (100,000) were expressed in normal lung tissue, while there was a reduced expression or absence of isoform 1 in NSCLC.
CONCLUSIONThe expression of p120(ctn) is abnormal in NSCLC; p120(ctn) may serve as a useful prognostic marker for NSCLC.
