3.Analysis of causes of death and potential years of life lost in 7 districts of Guangzhou.
Journal of Southern Medical University 2011;31(6):1075-1077
OBJECTIVETo analyze the causes of death and potential years of life lost (PYLL) in 7 districts of Guangzhou from 2003 to 2005.
METHODSThe bureau of Health of Guangzhou provided the data of 70 201 cases of death occurring between 2003 and 2005. The top 10 causes of death were analyzed and the PYLL and crude death rate were calculated using mortality difference dissembling method.
RESULTSBetween 2003 and 2005, the top 3 causes of death in Guangzhou were diseases of the circulatory system, neoplasms and respiratory diseases. Aging of the population led to an increased death rate. The major causes of death affecting PYLL consisted of neoplasms, diseases of the circulatory system, injuries and poisoning.
CONCLUSIONPriority should be given to the control of diseases of the circulatory system in the health care in Guangzhou. Neoplasms, injuries and poisoning all contribute to a high PYLL.

Objective To study ADFR with statin programmed therapy of osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats. Methods Fifty female rats were randomly allocated into 2 groups:sham operation (S, n =10) and OVX ( n =40) group. After operation for one month,OVX were randomly allocated into 4 groups (each n =10):OVX,statins (T),bisphosphonates (B) and statins+bisphosphonates+calcium+vitamin D (ADFR).After feeding statins or bisphosphonates or ADFR for 100 days, all rats were sacrificed. The effects of T or B or ADFR on bone histomorphology or osteocalcin in sera or deoxypyridoxine in urea were studied. Results The data showed that osteocalcin and deoxypyridine in OVX group were significantly improved compared with S group ( P 0 05) ,in B group was decreased, and in ADFR group was increased compared with OVX group. The histomorphometric date showed that TOS,MOSW,STS/DTS,TBOS,TBSC and iMAR in OVX were significantly increased, and TBV,MLT and ? in OVX were decreased, compared with S group.TBV in B,T and ADFR groups was larger than that in OVX group.TOS,MOSW,TBOS and TBCS in B group were smaller than those in OVX group,? in B group was longer than that in OVX group,TBCS and ? in T group were increased compared with OVX group. Conclusion Statins promote bone turnover, increase osteoblast activity and osteoid production, and reduce the bone construction.Bisphosphonates inhibit bone absorption, while ADFR acelerate bone formation and reduce bone loss, suggesting that polytherapy is preferable to monotherapy.

Background A multitude of studies reported statins prevent the myocardial hypertrophy induced by pressure overload, but the mechanism is unclear. Objective To study the protective effect of atorvastatin on the myocardial hypertrophy caused by pressure overload and it's anti-inflammation effect. Methods Forty Wistar rats were randomized to untreated group(n=10),atorvastatin group(2 mg/kg?d,by gavage,n=10),sham op- eration group(n=10)and control group(n=10).Ventricular hypertrophy model was achieved by surgical con- stricting the abdominal aorta. All rats were sacrificed 8 weeks after the operation and the heart weight to body ratio, left ventricular weight to body ratio, and the size of cardiomyocyte were determined. The expressions of interleukin 18(IL-18)and cardiotrophin 1(CT-1)in the cadiocyte were assessed by reverse transcription polymer- ase chain reaction(RT-PCR).Results Compared with control group,SBP in myocardial hypertrophy group was significantly increased(174?9 vs control 112?15 mmHg,P

Objective To analyze the surgical technique of extraperitoneal laparoseopic radical prostatectomy with neurovascular bundle preservation and its effect on micturition control and sexual function in patients with prostate cancer. Methods Twenty-two patients with a median age of 66. 9 years underwent extraperitoneal laparoscopic radical prostatectomy with neurovascular bundle preservation from October 2005 to March 2009 in our hospital and Shanghai Changzheng hospital. All patients had no erectile dysfunction. According to the pathology, there were 2 cases of PIN high grade, 4 cases of Tla-b, 9 cases of Tlc, 4 cases of T2a-b, 2 cases of T2e and 1 case of T3a. Results All operation were successful and no case was conversed to open surgery. The average operation time was 225 min and the mean blood loss was 850ml. The amount of blood loss in 1 case was 1200 ml because of injuring deep dorsal vein of penis. 4 cases received blood transfusion, gatheters of all patients were removed 2 weeks after operation, and three cases with mild incontinence regained continence of urine after 6 months follow-up. No patient occurred postoperative vesicourethral anastomotic leakage of urine. The surgical margin of 1 case was positive. No biochemical index of prostatl cancer recurred during postoperative follow-up of 10-24 months (with an average of 16 months). 20 cases had sexual function recovery after operation. Conclusions The extraperitoneal laparoscopie radical prostatectomy with neurovascular bundle preservation for prostate cancer is a safe and effective treatment method with less bleeding, small damage and less complications. It can guarantee the maximum of micturition control and sexual function, which is worthy to be popularized in the clinic.

Adopting the cell model of multilayer spherical symmetry and the circuit analysis, the present paper gives the calculated results of the voltages on each of several parts of malignant Tonsillar B-cells and Jurkat T lymphocytes when the first-order Gaussian pulses at different central frequency apposed on them. The relationship between the central frequency and the transmembrane voltages of plasma membrane is also given. The optimum frequency causing electroporation in nuclear envelope is given as well. The paper discusses the reasons of electroporation in membrane and DNA degradation in nuclear. The work provides a reference for usage of transient bipolar electric pulses in cancer treatment.

Journal of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Medical Sciences) 2013;33(1):137-141
In the retina, pH fluctuations may play an important role in adapting retinal responses to different light intensities and are involved in the fine tuning of visual perception. Acidosis occurs in the subretinal space (SRS) under pathological conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Although it is well known that many transporters in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells can maintain pH homeostasis efficiently, other receptors in RPE may also be involved in sensing acidosis, such as acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs). In this study, we investigated whether ASIC1a was expressed in the RPE cells and whether it was involved in the function of these cells. Real-time RT-PCR and Western blotting were used to analyze the ASIC1a expression in ARPE-19 cells during oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)). Furthermore, inhibition or over-expression of ASIC1a in RPE cells was obtained using inhibitors (amiloride and PCTx1) or by the transfection of cDNA encoding hASIC1a. Cell viability was determined by using the MTT assay. The real-time RT-PCR and Western blotting results showed that both the mRNA and protein of ASIC1a were expressed in RPE cells. Inhibition of ASICs by amiloride in normal RPE cells resulted in cell death, indicating that ASICs play an important physiological role in RPE cells. Furthermore, over-expression of ASIC1a in RPE cells prolonged cell survival under oxidative stress induced by H(2)O(2). In conclusion, ASIC1a is functionally expressed in RPE cells and may play an important role in the physiological function of RPE cells by protecting them from oxidative stress.
