Cancer Research and Clinic 1999;0(05):-
Objective To investigate the expression of cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2)in breast cancers, and understand its clinical significance. Methods The immunohistochemistry was used to determine the ex- pression of COX-2 in the 40 tissues of breast cancer and 18 adjacent noncancerous mammary tissues. Results The positive expression of COX-2 was detected in 52.5% of breast cancer tissues and in 11.1% of adjacent noncancerous mammary tissues. There was a significant difference in the expression of COX-2 between breast cancer tissues and adjacent noncancerous mammary tissues(P0.05).Conclusion COX-2 was over expressed in breast cancer and correlated with metastatic lymph nodes and HER-2/neu.The expression of COX-2 may play an important role in carcinogen- esis, progression and prognosis of breast cancer.

Caco-2 cell monolayer model is widely utilized in drug absorption study and 12-well transwellTM plates were commonly used to study the absorption of different kinds of natural products. To establish a stable method for the study of traditional Chinese medicine prescription, 6-well plates were chosen because of the larger well volumes than 12-well plates. To study the impacts of collagen kinds, coating density as well as coating time on the cell culture, the transepithelial electrical resistance of Caco-2 cell monolayers grown on different collagen coating transwells was determined, and the permeations of propranolol and atenolol as standard markers were detected with HPLC. The results showed that the kinds of collagen, the different coating densities and coating time of rat tail collagen had no significant influences on the Caco-2 cell monolayer integrality and absorption capacity. 6-well plates coated with 2 micro g Scm-2 rat tail collagen for 1 hour were enough reliable and suitable for the study of traditional Chinese medicine prescription in vitro.

Rhynchophylla is a Chinese herb commonly used in clinical practice. It's also the primary herb of some famous Chinese herbal compound such as Tianma Gouteng decoction, and Lingyang Gouteng decoction. According the record from many previous materia medica literatures, rhynchophylla should be added later during decoction. Pharmaceutical research showed that rhynchophylla alkaloids were not stable. Which has resulted in many problems in the research and its application. For example, there was not a quantitative determination method in "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" of past and present versions, which seriously impacted its quality control and product application. Firstly, records from previous materia medica literatures and "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" were systematically sorted based on the chemical stability of rhynchophylla. Secondly, pharmaceutical research including chemical compositions and their stability, pharmacological effects, extraction process and quality analysis, was reviewed after reference of literatures published at home and abroad in recent decades. Positive reference and evidence for further research and development of rhynchophylla will be provided in the article.

Microbiology 1992;0(06):-
Commercial production of bioethanol from lignocellulosic hydrolysates requires efficient fermenting strains. The abilities of the strain to converting all types of sugars in the hydrolysate to ethanol in high yield and to effectively tolerating/metabolizing inhibitors are necessary. Genome shuffling is a novel method for breeding, and it has been applied in pharmaceutical and food industry. This review summarized the technique of genome shuffling including principle, process, applications and its prospect for strains improvement in ethanol production from lignocellulosic hydrolysates.

Objective To investigate quantitatively the thermal sensation characteristics of the patients with facial palsy and the value of quantitative thermal test (QTT) in prognostication. Methods The QTT threshold of the fore ear and cheek of 30 patients with peripheral facial palsy was tested, their facial nerve conduction velocity was measured, and House-Brackmann facial nerve grading system was used to estimate facial nerve function at 2~3 weeks,a month, two months and half a year post onset. Results It was found that 12 out of 30 patients had abnor- mal QTT threshold value;the majority of them suffered from herpes virus and diabetes. In those with abnormal QTT, 8 were with diabetes mellitus (account for 66.7%),3 with partial shingles (account for 25%),and 1 with positive serum virus infection (account for 8.3%).Those with normal QTT were significantly different from those with abnor- mal QTT,with regard to the House-Brackmann rating scores after 2 and 6 months post onset (P

Objective To explore the maternal-fetal transmission patterns and interventional methods of syphilis during pregnancy. Methods A total of 847 cases of syphilis in pregnancy confirmed by rapid plasma reagin test(RPR)and treponema pallidum hemoagglutination test(TPHA)were treated with procaine benzylpenieillin intramuscular injection, and with erythrocin oral medication if hypersensitive to benzylpenicillin.Eight hundred forty seven cases of syphilis during pregnancy were followed up for pregnancy outcomes. And their newborn babies were tested using the RPR.The newborns with positive results were given intervention and followed up until 24 months after birth.Results(1)A total of 733 cases among the total 847 have given birth to living-babies,in which 626 cases were tested using RPR,and the positive rate was 55.1%(345/626).(2)The RPR positive rate, neonatal mortality, preterm birth rate and low birth rate in the newborn of mothers with an RPR titer higher than or at 1:8 were higher than those of mothers with an RPR titer lower than 1:8(P

Ginseng saponins are a type of important active substances in the ginseng genus plants. They have notable pharmacological activities of antineoplastic, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective activities, which have been drawn more attention to obtain minor ginsenosides by all kinds of methods. In this review, we discussed the latest progress for enrichment of minor ginsenosides by biological transformation of major ginsenosides. At the same time, we have a brief outlook of the research at bioconversion of ginseng saponins.
