Journal of Applied Clinical Pediatrics 2004;0(07):-
Objective To study the clinical application of quantitative ultrasound(QUS) which evaluate skeletal status of children and adolescents. Methods Subjects were children and adolescents aged 0-18 years old.Tibia/radial bone strength was obtained using QUS.Children who were younger than 2 years old only were measured at midpiece of tibia, and children who were older than 2 years old were measu-red at midpiece of tibia and radius. At the same time, calcium in peripheral blood was measured by the method of atomic absorption. Results 1.Radial and tibial bone strength presented nonlinear growth with age in healthy children and adolescents.2.Bone strengths of different anatomic-sites were different and the disparity rate of evaluation at different anatomic sites was 30.1%.3.The bone strength of the children who had some risk factors that could induce decrease of bone strength or had some diseases of bone metabolism was lower than healthy children.Composition of low bone strength children was 71.1% in high risk children, and was 47.9% in those who had some symptom or physical sign of calcium deficiency.4.Composition of low bone strength children was 44.2% in those who had normal peripheral blood calcium, and composition of normal bone strength children in those who had low peripheral blood calcium was 59.7%.The 2 methods had no correlation. Conclusions QUS is a quite useful technique in evaluation skeletal status of children and adolescents, and is sensitive for high risk children. It is necessary to measure radius and tibia, and consider blood calcium and bone strength to evaluate practical level of calcium and nutritional state of children.

Objective To observe the expression of c-fos mRNA and protein in fluoride treated mouse fibroblast (FB) and osteoblast (OB) and to further explore the effects of c-fos in the osteogenic action of FB. Methods Mouse FB and OB were divided into control group and six fluoride groups (0, 0.0001, 0.0010, 0.1000, 1.0000, 10.0000,20.0000 mg/L F-), and the levels of c-fos protein at 2,4,24,48,72 h and c-fos mRNA at 48 h were measured by using ELISA and RT-PCR methods. Results Compared with the control group, fluoride increased the content of c-fos protein obviously in all FB group(P<0.01); and it is increased in 0.0001,0.0010 mg/L groups at 48 h (0.73±0.04, 0.64±0.14) and 0.0001 mg/L group at 72 h(0.70±0.17) in OB compared with the control group (0.32±0.04,0.27±0.05, P<0.01). Compared with the control group (0.95±0.11), RT-PCR revealed an increasing tendency of the expression of c-fos mRNA at 48 h in FB (1.06±0.16, 1.06±0.12,1.12±0.16,1.04±0.15,1.04±0.10,1.15±0.29), but the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05); however, a statistically significant difference(P<0.01) of c-fos mRNA in 20.0000 mg/L group(1.40±0.17) in O B was found compared with the control group (1.06±0.06). Conclusion The higher expression of c-fos mRNA and protein in FB induced by fluoride may play an important role in the transformation of osteoblastic phenotype as well as increase the osteogenesis ability in FB.

Objective To study the diagnostic value of multi-direction adjusted multiplanar reconstruction (MPR)by 64-slice CT myelography (CTM)in diagnosing cervical nerve injury, and the possibility of the MPR to replace conventional myelography and CT direct-scanning axial images. Methods Twenty-six patients with cervical nerve root injury were examined by conventional myelograpby and 64-slice CT using isotropic parameters. Then multi-direction MPR were performed to display nerve roots on coronal and sagittal planes besides axial images.Twenty-six patients were performed surgical operations and diagnosis were obtained. The coincident diagnosing rate with surgical operations results were compared statistically among multi-direction MPR,direct-scanning axial CT images, conventional myelography. The numbers of images were also compared between axial MPR and direct scanning axial CT images. Results Direct sign of nerve root avulsion was the loss of normal nerve root defect seen in the Isovist filled thecal sac in 6d-slice CT,which was found in 31 nerve roots.Indirect signs included:(1)Traumatic pseudomeningocele: 29 nerve roots showed the leak of Isovist into nerve root sheath, and extended into foramina;(2)Arachnoid cyst: 26 nerve roots clearly displays cystic distension in nerve root, which has low- density fine clew form septation from subarachnoid cavity and no nerve root in the cyst ;(3)Deformity of the subarachnoid space : deformity of thecal sac, partially lack of Isovist into arachnoid space, which was found in 17 nerve roots. The coincident diagnosing rate of cervical nerve root injury by multi-direction adjusted coronal MPR imaging was 92.6% (50/54),which was higher than by axial CT (77.8%,42/54)and conventional myelography (68.5%,37/54),There was significant difference between the conventional myelography, direct-scanning axial CT,multi-direction MPR images (Kappa = 0.686,0.772,0.920, respectively,P

Chinese Journal of Biotechnology 2002;18(1):16-19
Na+/H+ antiporter plays an important role in mechanisms of the plant salt tolerance, it extrudes Na+ from cell energized by the proton gradient generated by the plasm membrane H(+)-ATPase and/or compartmentalizes Na+ in vacuole energized by the proton gradient generated by the vacuolar membrane H(+)-ATPase and H(+)-PPiase. This review mainly discusses the latest progress in the study of Na+/H+ antiporter in plant and yeast at molecular level.

Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica 2003;38(12):900-903
AIMTo investigate the effect of sodium ferulate (SF) on glycerol-induced renal injury.
METHODSGlycerol solution 50% was injected intramuscularly to establish a model of acute tubular necrosis in mice. SF was administered intraperitoneally at the dose of 100-200 mg.kg-1 at the beginning of establishing the model and its effect was observed by monitoring renal function, antioxidative functions and renal pathologic histology.
RESULTSAt 6 and 72 h after glycerol injection, SF treatment (100-200 mg.kg-1) showed significant and dose-dependent antagonistic actions on the increment of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (Cr), and N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (NAG) induced by glycerol. The increase of renal malondialdehyde (MDA) content and the decrease of glutathione content, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (Cat) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities resulting from glycerol injection were remarkably inversed by SF at the dose of 200 mg.kg-1. Meanwhile, improvement of the renal histology was observed as well.
CONCLUSIONSF showed beneficial effect on glycerol-induced acute tubular necrosis due to its antioxidative action.

The yeast fusant ZFF-28, which is high in biomass production and rich in selenium, was constructed after mutagenesis and protoplasts fusion between yeast strains. The total selenium content of ZFF-28 is 1.8 and 1.0 times higher than that of the parental strains Saccharomyces cerevisiae ZY-67 and Saccharomyces kluyveri SZY-198 respectively. Using single factor tests and a L16(4(3) x 2(1)) orthogonal design, the cultivation conditions was optimized as: 50mL culture in 250mL shake flasks in molasses containing 6% sugar and 60microg/mL Se at 28 degree C for 25h at 220 r/min, with the initial pH adjusted to 6.0 - 6.5. Under the optimized conditions, the biomass (dry weight) reached 8.2g/L and the Se content of the cells reached 2050microg/g, with organic and inorganic Se contents being 91% and 9% respectively.

Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin 2003;0(12):-
AIM To determine the effect of L-arginin e on cerebral blood perfusion following subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH) in rats. METHODS Endovascular perforating SAH models were replicated in Wista r rats, and animals were divided into sham-operated group, SAH group and SAH+ L-arginine group. Dynamic changes of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) with in 24 hours were measured and serum nitric oxide(NO, NO - 2/NO - 3)levels at different time points within 24 hours were detected. Mean arterial blood pre ssure and blood gas were monitored during the experiment. RESULTS No obvious change in physiological parameters in the three groups was observed . rCBF and serum nitric oxide level at every time point after operation in SAH g roup were lower than those in sham-operated group. Pathological alterations abo ve in SAH+L-arginine group were less obvious than those in SAH group. CONCLUSION L-arginine, by antagonizing the decrease of nitric oxi de, exerts protective effect on secondary cerebral ischemia following SAH.
