Post-stroke depression(PSD) is one of the most common complications after stroke,and seriously influenced the quality of life of hemiplegic patients.The article would review the associated factors and mechanism of PSD.

OBJECTIVETo investigate aquaporin 9 (AQP9) mRNA and protein expression in antrum follicle and luteinizing granulosa cells of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) ovary, and its relation to follicular fluid steroids hormone levels during IVF cycles.

METHODSAQP9 mRNA expression on luteinizing granulosa cells in IVF cycles was detected by RT-PCR. AQP9 protein expression in antrum follicles of PCOS ovary and luteinizing granulosa cells was measured by immunohistochemistry. The concentrations of estradiol (E2), progesterone (P) and testerone (T) in follicular fluid were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA).

RESULTThe expression of AQP9 mRNA in luteinizing granulosa cells during IVF cycles was positive by RT-PCR. No significant differences in AQP9 mRNA levels in granulosa cells between PCOS and control group were found during IVF cycles. The expression level of AQP9 mRNA in large follicles was higher than that in small follicles, but not significantly. The immunoreactivity for AQP9 was localized in membrane and cytoplast of granulosa cells in antrum follicles from PCOS ovary and luteinizing granulosa cells during IVF cycles. Multiple regression analysis showed that AQP9 mRNA levels on granulosa cells were not correlated with E2, P and T levels in follicular fluid during IVF cycles.

CONCLUSIONAQP9 may play an important role in the follicle development and antrum formation through water transport and AQP9 may be involved in the mechanism of follicle development in PCOS.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the levels of bone morphogenetic protein-15 (BMP-15) in human follicular fluid (FF) and its association with response to ovarian stimulation.

METHODSWestern blotting was performed to determine the levels of BMP-15 in FF obtained from follicle aspirates in 70 patients undergoing IVF treatment. According to the response to ovarian stimulation the patients were divided into poor responder group and normal responder group.

RESULTBMP-15 levels in FF of poor responders were significantly higher than those in normal responders (1.01 +/- 0.34 vs 0.77 +/- 0.24, P<0.01).

CONCLUSIONIncreased levels of BMP-15 in FF may be associated with poor response to ovarian stimulation.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the expression of cathepsin D in ovary of patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

METHODSWestern blot was performed to detect the expression of cathepsin D and immunohistochemistry was used to detect the protein distribution in ovarian tissue.

RESULTSemi-quantity values of cathepsin D expression in PCOS and control group were 2.06 +/- 0.39 and 4.76 +/- 1.43 (P<0.05), respectively. Immunostaining for cathepsin D was obvious in both follicles and stromal cells, and the strongest immunostaining was seen in granulosa cells of follicles. Immunochemical study showed the protein was mainly located on the cytoplasm and cell membrane.

CONCLUSIONCathepsin D expression is down-regulated in ovaries of PCOS patients, which may provide a clue for the abnormality of follicle development in PCOS.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the epidemiological characteristics of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in men attending a sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic in Hangzhou area.

METHODSMale subjects (n=375) aged 18-70 years, attending the STD clinic were recruited. Urethral swabs were assessed for HPV DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with the consensus primers MY09/11. HPV genotypes of positive PCR products were determined by restriction fragment length polymorphisms and direct sequence analysis.

RESULTSOf the 375 swabs collected, 305 (81.3%) yielded sufficient DNA for the subsequent HPV analysis. Among the 305 subjects, the prevalence of HPV was 13.8%. Nononcogenic HPV types were found in 8.5% (26/305) of subjects, oncogenic types in 4.3% (13/305), and multiple types in 1.0% (3/305). The prevalence of HPV infection was higher in subjects from urban area than in those from rural area (P < 0.05). The prevalence was also higher in those who received fewer years of education (P < 0.05) and those who had more sex partners (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONSHPV infection among men at high risk is not uncommon. The detection rate of HPV DNA is significantly related to some sociodemographic factors, such as residence, educational level and the number of sex partners.

In the present study we made out an animal model on rabbit whose trigeminus and facialis nerves were simultaneously or only the latter one was severed. The pathological changes in facial muscle atrophy under different nerve injuries were investigated. The degeneration of contractile proteins of upper lip muscle -- myosin and actin was observed. In addition, we also examined the ultrastructural changes in the muscle atrophy in the two above-mentioned nerve injury cases. We observed that the intact trigeminus nerve could delay and lighten the atrophy of facialis-denervated facial muscle and attenuate the degeneration of myosin and actin, as well as decrease the increment of collagen and maintain the ultrastructure of the thick and thin muscle filaments. These results may provide the possibility of improvement of clinical treatment for facial muscle palsy.

Objective To study the safety,efficacy and complications of carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS) in patients with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis,and compare it with medical therapy.Methods Fifty-two patients with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis,admitted to our hospital from May 2005 to May 2010,were performed CAS,and the other 63 patients with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis admitted to our hospital at the same period were adopted medical therapy.Patients of both groups were followed-up for 3,6 and 12 months,and 1 y; the incidence of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) were compared and the NIHSS scores were noted between the 2 groups.Results The operation was terminated in 1 patient because of poor operation path; carotid sinus reflex occurred in 9 during intraoperative or postoperative periods; vascular spasm occurred in 2; hyperperfusion syndrome occurred in 4 during intraoperative period,but no serious consequences were noted in patients performed CAS after being given timely and effective treatment.Stroke recurred after 3 months in the patient whose operation was failed; no stroke or TIA recurred in the other patients during the 1-y-follow-up period; and 1 recurred after 1 y in patients received CAS.There are 11,9,7 and 12 patients had stroke or TIA attack during the 3,6 and 12 months,and 1 y follow-up period,respectively,in patients given medical therapy.As compared with those in the patients given medical therapy,the NIHSS scores during the 3,6 and 12 months,and 1 y follow-up period in patients received CAS were significantly lower (P＜0.05).Conclusion The CAS is a safe and feasible method in patients with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis;as compared with medical therapy,it can prevent recurrence of stroke more effectively.

OBJECTIVETo establish a predicting model for stroke according to cerebral vascular hemodynamic indexes and major risk factors of stroke.

METHODSParticipants selected from a stroke cohort with 25,355 population in China. The first step was to carry out principal component analysis using CVHI. Logistic regression with principal component and main risk factors of stroke were then served as independent variables and stroke come on as dependent variables. The predictive model was established according to coefficient of regression and probability of each participant was also estimated. Finally, ROC curve was protracted and predictive efficacy was measured.

RESULTSThe accumulative contribution rates of four principal components were 58.1%, 79.4%, 88.4% and 94.6% respectively. Seven variables were being selected into the equation with the first to fourth principal component as history of hypertension, age and sex. Area under ROC curve was 0.855 and optimal cut-off point was probability over 0.05. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of stroke prediction were 80.7%, 78.5% and 78.5% respectively.

CONCLUSIONThe model established by principal component and regression could effectively predict the incidence of stroke coming on.

OBJECTIVETo explore factor IX gene mutations and molecular mechanism of haemophilia B in 3 unrelated families.

METHODSThe activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and FIX activity (FIX: C) assay were used for phenotypic diagnosis. The STR loci gene polymorphisms for genetic linkage analysis in the patients and their family members were assayed. All of the 8 exons and the exon-intron boundaries of FIX gene were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct sequencing.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONMutations were found in the FIX gene of the propositi. Proband 1 had a G22119A mutation in exon 6, proband 2 a G7392C mutation in exon 2 and proband 3 a T32685C mutation in exon 8.

OBJECTIVESTo measure serum and follicular resistin, steroids hormone levels in women with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) (BMI (body mass index)<25 kg/m(2)), to assess possible correlations of resistin to hormonal and metabolic parameters and to analyze the clinical outcomes of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) in women with PCOS and tubal infertility.

STUDY DESIGNWe analyzed the clinical outcomes of IVF-ET in women with PCOS (BMI<25 kg/m(2)) and tubal infertility during the years 2002 to 2004 and compared the serum and follicular fluid resistin levels, estradiol (E(2)), progesterone (P), testosterone (T) levels in 20 PCOS and 20 healthy, age-matched women without PCOS during IVF-stimulated cycles. The correlations between the resistin levels and the outcomes of IVF-ET were evaluated.

RESULTSNo significant differences in resistin levels of either serum or follicular fluid between PCOS and control group were found. However, resistin levels in serum were higher than that in follicular fluid in both groups. Multiple regression analysis showed that resistin levels in serum did not correlate with BMI, estradiol, LH (luteinizing hormone) and insulin level in fasting blood. No significant correlations were found between follicular fluid reisistin levels and fertilization rate, implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate or early miscarriage rate in both PCOS and control groups.

CONCLUSIONOur results show that resistin does not have correlation with the hormonal and metabolic parameters as well as the outcomes of IVF. These data suggest that resistin is unlikely to be a local determinant factor in steroidogenesis and growth and maturation of oocytes during IVF-ET in lean women with PCOS.
