OBJECTIVESTo study the effectiveness of an artificial liver support system.
METHODSThirty-two patients with medicamentous liver insufficiency were treated with an artificial liver support system in addition to the routine medicinal therapy. Thirty patients treated with routine medicinal therapy only served as controls.
RESULTSThe clinical symptoms (e.g. hepatic encephalopathy) and the laboratory indices (serum total bilirubin and prothrombin time) of the treatment group patients were obviously improved compared with those of the control group patients (P < 0.05). The cure rate and hospitalization days were 90.6% (26/32) and 47 days respectively in the treatment group, and 43.3% (13/30) and 72 days in the control group (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONUsing an artificial liver support system combined with routine medicinal therapy is more effective than using medication alone.

OBJECTIVETo analyze the clinicopathological features of intestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms.
METHODSThe clinicopathological features of 114 patients with intestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms treated in our hospital from April 1999 to March 2011 were retrospectively reviewed, including tumor location, histological classification, muscle invasion, metastasis and clinical data. Immunohistochemical SP staining was applied to examine the expression of 15 markers in the tumor specimens.
RESULTSThe male:female ratio of the patients was 1.33, and most of the tumors were located in the rectum of polypoid type. The positive rate of immunohistochemical staining of Syn expression was 97.4%, NSE 95.6%, PGP9.5 84.2%, CD56 75.4%, CD57 72.8%, CgA 43.0%, S100 36.0%, Syn combined with CgA 99.1%, and the two marker Syn and CgA combined with any one of CD56, CD57 or PGP9.5 reached to 100%. The 5-years survival rates of G1, G2 were 98.9% and 76.9%, respectively, and the overall 5-year survival rate of intestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms was 92.9%. Two of the 7 cases of poor differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma died after operation, another 2 of them lost to follow up. Others were still alive during the follow-up. Among the 3 patients with small cell carcinoma, two survived for 8 to 24 months after operation, and one lost to follow up. Two cases of mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma (MANEC) were still surviving during the follow-up. Different histological types of intestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms were significantly different in sex, primary tumor site, pathological type, tumor size, types of combined tumors, pT stage, aggressive nervous and vascular invasion, and metastasis (all P < 0.05). Single factor analysis of the intestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms indicated that tumor size (Z = -6.334, P < 0.001), histological classification (χ(2) = 31.175, P < 0.001) and muscle invasion (χ(2) = 63.567, P < 0.001) were associated with metastasis of intestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms. Logistic analysis showed that muscle invasion was the main behavior risk factor of this tumor (OR = 1.827, P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSIntestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms usually occur in males, and the most common involved organ is the rectum. Their histological types are related to the prognosis, and the depth of invasion is an important metastasis factor of intestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms. Of the neuroendocrine makers, the combination of CgA and Syn shows a higher diagnostic sensitivity.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the levels of blood pressure and serum lipids, and examine the relationship between hypertension and hyperlipidemia in Hei Yi Zhuang Chinese living in Guangxi.
METHODSA total of 1056 people of Hei Yi Zhuang ethnicity were studied. Blood pressure, body height, body weight, and serum levels of lipids and apolipoprotein were measured. The data were compared with those in 925 people of Han ethnicity, who live in the same region.
RESULTSSystolic blood pressure and pulse pressure were significantly higher in Hei Yi Zhuang than Han Chinese (P < 0.001). The prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension and hypertension was also significantly higher in Hei Yi Zhuang than Han Chinese (P < 0.001). Serum concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and apolipoprotein (Apo) B, and the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia were significantly lower in Hei Yi Zhuang than Han Chinese (P < 0.05). Serum concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the Apo A1 to Apo B ratio were significantly higher in Hei Yi Zhuang than Han Chinese (P < 0.001). The prevalence of hypertension in Hei Yi Zhuang Chinese was positively associated with triglycerides (r = 0.425, P < 0.05), whereas the prevalence of hypertension in Han Chinese was positively correlated with total cholesterol (r = 0.623, P < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONThe present study revealed a significant difference in blood pressure and serum lipids between Hei Yi Zhuang and Han ethnic groups, and an association between hypertension and hyperlipidemia.

In order to make Dendrobium officinale return to the nature, the temperature and humidity in whole days of the built rock model with different slopes and aspects in the natural distribution of wild D. officinale in Tianmu Mountain were recorded by MH-WS01 automatic recorder. The results showed that the slope has a significant impact on the extreme temperature on the surface of the rocks. In summer, the extreme temperature on the surface of horizontal or soft rock can reach to 69.4 ℃, while the temperatures were lower than 50 ℃ on the vertical rock. In winter, the temperatures on the surface of vertical rock were higher and the low temperature duration was shorter than those on the horizontal or soft rock. Also, the humidity of the rocks was significantly influenced by the slope. The monthly average humidity on the surface of vertical rock was above 80%RH. Furthermore, the aspect had a significant impact on the temperature and humidity on the surface of the rocks, but had no significant effect on the daily mean temperature and extreme temperature on the surface of vertical rock. Therefore, the slope affects the survival of D. officinale by affecting the extreme temperature of rocks and affects the growth of D. officinale by affecting the humidity. The choice of slope is the key to the success of cliff epiphytic cultivation for D. officinale.

In order to investigate the effects of germplasm and host tree trunk on endophytic fungal communities in epiphytic Dendrobium catenatum, a total of 3 835 isolates were recovered from roots, stems and leaves of four D. catenatum germplasms attached to one kind of host tree trunk and one germplasm attached to four kinds of epiphyte-host tree trunks. A total of 152 taxa were identified and classified based on the fungal cultural characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of ITS sequences. The taxa were assigned to 60 genera, 35 families, 21 orders and 5 classes of 2 phyla. The results indicated that D. catenatum cultivated in stereo cultivation harbor variety of fungi. The dominant fungal groups were different between Lin'an and Yiwu. Moreover, several groups showed geographical specificity, such as Arthrinium, Coniochaeta, Fusarium, Neofusicoccum and Zopfiella only dominating in Panshan of Lin'an, while Alternaria, Bjerkandera, Cercophora, Nigrospora and Trichoderma only dominating in Shangxi of Yiwu. There was no significant difference in diversity or species richness of endophytic fungi neither among germplasm nor host tree trunk. However, the richness and diversity indices exhibited a strong dependence on tissue type (<0.05). The germplasm and host tree trunk impact the distribution patterns of endophytic fungi less than tissue type. Nevertheless, the relative frequencies of the dominant fungal groups were different among germplasms or host tree trunk types. Furthermore, there were some fungal species specific to certain germplasm or host tree trunk. This might be due to the distinctions in growth traits and chemical compositions of D. catenatum owning to the differences in D. catenatumgenetic background and microenvironment of host tree. Most of fungal taxa exhibit tissue specificity or preference. These results provide the basis for the study on the relationship between endophytic fungi and D. catenatum in stereo cultivation mode.

Objective Focused cardiac ultrasound (FCU) and lung ultrasound (LU) are increasingly being used in critically ill patients. This study aimed to investigate the effect of FCU in combination with LU on these patients and to determine if the timing of ultrasound examination was associated with treatment change. Methods This is a multicenter cross-sectional observational study. Consecutive patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) were screened for enrollment. FCU and LU were performed within the first 24 h, and treatment change was proposed by the performer based on the ultrasound results and other clinical conditions. Results Among the 992 patients included, 502 were examined within 6 h of ICU admission (early phase group), and 490 were examined after 6 h of admission (later phase group). The early phase group and the later phase group had similar proportions of treatment change (48.8%
