Objective To study the neurogenic mechanism of urinary bladder dysfunction changes in the aged rats. Methods Wistar rats were divided into aged group (24 month old) and young adult group (6 month old, served as the control group). The reactivity of urinary detrusor strips in the two groups to different concentrations of carbachol, noradrenalin, isoproterenol, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and atropin, was measured respectively using an in vitro tissue bath technique. Results Compared with the young adult rats, significantly increased relaxation response to high concentration of isoproterenol and contractile response to ATP were found in aged rats. No difference in responses to carbachol, atropin and noradrenalin was found in the aged rats. Conclusion The dysfunction in aging bladder may be related to the purinergic and ? adrenergic response modifications.

BACKGROUND: Nano-hydroxyapatite has been widely used as reconstructive and prosthetic material for osseous tissue, owing to its excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity. But, its brittleness is one of the most serious obstacles for its wider applications as load-bearing implants. Therefore, hydroxyapatite/chitosan composites have been widely studied as bone substitute, due to their excellent biocompatibUity and suitable mechanical properties.OBJECTIVE: To review various preparation methods of hydroxya patite/chitosan composites and the development trend in this field.METHODS: Articles were searched in Medline Database (1995-01/2009-03), VIP Database (1995-01/2009-03) and "qinghuatongfang" Database (1995-01/2009-03) with the keywords of "nano-hydroxyapatite, chitosan, preparation, development trend".RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Total 2 034 related articles were collected, including 1 634 in Chinese and 670 in English. Following excluding earilier published, duplicate, and similar studies, we brought into 37 sub-standard literatures. Hydroxyapatite/chitosan composite in nanometer size, with similar structure as natural bone, has better biological function compared with corresponding micrometer composite. Simultaneously, optimized material composition, structure and technology will obtain more suitable bone substitute in mechanical property compared with natural bone. This paper reviews preparation methods at home and abroad in recent years, with the rapid development of biological materials, hydroxyapatite compositematerials have been wisely used in bone tissue repair and replacement surgery, but its poor mechanical properties limits its clinical application.

Objective To investigate the response of astrocytes and neurons in the medullary visceral zone (MVZ) to neuropathic pain induced by the spared nerve injury (SNI, the tibial nerve and the common peroneal nerve were sectioned, while the sural nerve was intacted). Methods The SNI operation and sham operation (only incised the skin of thigh, but the tibial nerve and the common peroneal nerve did not cut) were performed in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. The paw withdrawal mechanical threshold (PWMT) was measured at 10,20,30 days after operation. By using single or double immunofluorescent staining method,we investigated and measured that the mean fluorescent intensity (MFI) of anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP, a marker of astrocytes) signal in the astrocytes, the mean member of Fos/ GFAP double labeled astrocytes and Fos / tyrosine hydorxylase (TH) double labeled neurons in MVZ after operation. Results As compared with control or sham groups, SNI induced that the PWMT became significant sensitivity and peaked at 20 days after SNI. The activated astrocytes revealed an activated morphology, the MFI of anti-GFAP signal markedly strengthened, the mean number of Fos/GFAP double labeled astrocytes and Fos/TH double labeled neurons in the nucleus of the tract solitarius (NTS) and the ventral lateral medulla (VLM) increased significantly and peaked at 20 days after SNI. Conclusion The neurons and astrocytes in MVZ were sensitively activated by SNI.

Journal of Geriatric Cardiology 2011;08(1):31-34
Background The present study investigated the prognostic value of medical comorbidities at admission for 30-day in-hospital mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods A total of 5161 patients with AMI were admitted in Chinese PLA General Hospital between January 1,1993 and December 31,2007. Medical comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, previous myocardial infarction, valvular heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), renal insufficiency, previous stroke, atrial fibrillation and anemia, were identified at admission. The patients were divided into 4 groups based on the number of medical comorbidities at admission (0, 1, 2, and ≥ 3). Cox regression analysis was used to calculate relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), with adjustment for age, sex, heart failure and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Results The mean age of the studied population was 63.9 ± 13.6 years, and 80.1% of the patients were male. In 74.6% of the patients at least one comorbidity were identified. Hypertension (50.7%), diabetes mellitus (24.0%) and previous myocardial infarction (12%) were the leading common comorbidities at admission. The 30-day in-hospital mortality in patients with 0, 1, 2, and ≥ 3 comorbidities at admission (7.2%) was 4.9%, 7.2%, 11.1%, and 20.3%, respectively. The presence of 2 or more comorbidities was associated with higher 30-day in-hospital mortality compared with patients without comorbidity (RR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.13-1.77, P = 0.003, and RR: 1.95, 95% CI: 1.59-2.39, P = 0.000, respectively). Conclusions Medical comorbidities were frequently found in patients with AMI. AMI patients with more comorbidities had a higher 30-day in-hospital mortality might be predictive of early poor outcome in patients with AMI.

Objective To investigate the changes of urinary bladder structure and function of aging rats. Methods The aging group and the young adult group were composed of 24 month old rats and 6 month old rats, respectively. The urodynamic changes were studied with filling cystometry, structural changes by Masson stain and image analysis. Results Filling cystometry revealed that the maximum bladder capacity increased in the aging rats. No difference in leak point pressure was found in the two groups. The occurrence rate of the detrusor instability in aging group was higher than that in young adult group. In bladder structure, fibrous tissue increased significantly but smooth muscle decreased significantly in the detrusor of aging rats. Conclusion Aging may lead to changes of rat bladder structure and function, but its mechanism needs to be further studied.
