OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the possibility and anatomy landmark of the frontal beak approach of endoscopic frontal sinusotomy to the frontal sinus lesions.
METHOD:
(1)Twenty cases of frozen cadaveric head underwent spiral computed tomography scans. Then data were transferred into the Mimics image workstation to reorganize CT images in the coronal, sagittal, and axial planes. The anatomic parameters related to surgical approach points were measured, such as the distance between vertical plate of the middle turbinate and lamina papyracea and the thickness of the frontal beak. (2) 3D visual model of the frontal cell and the drainage way of the frontal sinus was produced with the application of Sinuses Trachea I software. (3)The endoscopic frontal sinus surgery were performed on 20 cases of subjects (objects)to find out the anatomy landmarks of the frontal beak approach, measure the parameters such as the distance between middle turbinate and lamina papyracea, and evaluate the potential surgical complications during operation.
RESULT:
(1)The frontal beak is a white bony arcs located at the attachment point of middle turbinate front inserted to the skull base. Its position was relatively constant, before frontal sinus above. (2)The distance between the middle turbinate vertical plate and lamina papyracea was (7. 61 ± 1. 34) mm. The thickness of the frontal beak in surgical approach was (3. 27 ± 0. 91) mm. (3) 3D visual structure of the frontal sinus and its ventilation pathway: the shape of unilateral frontal sinus looked like the cone, which was transited by the drainage pathway of the frontal sinus. The front part of the frontal sinus ostium is surrounded by the frontal beak. The upper part the frontal beak connected to the floor of the frontal sinus. (4) Frontal beak can be used as an landmark of frontal beak approach in the endoscopic frontal sinus surgery. But the lateral view of frontal sinus still was limited in the operation.
CONCLUSION
The endoscopic frontal sinus surgery with the approach of the frontal beak is easy to operate and learn. In this area between the double "L", the operation is safe.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the expression of promyelocytic leukaemia (PML) protein of PML protein in Bowen's disease (BD), skin squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and explore the role of PML in the pathogenesis of these diseases.
METHODSPML protein in normal skin tissues and lesions of Bowen's disease, SCC and BCC were detected with immunohistochemistry.
RESULTSNormal skin tissues did not express PML protein. In BCC, PML showed rather low expressions in the skin lesions (8.69% in cell nuclei and 4.35% in cytoplasm). The lesions in BD and SCC (grade I and II) showed obvious overexpression of PML protein in the cell nuclei and cytoplasm, and its expression in the cell nuclei of these lesions was significantly higher than that in grade III-IV SCC.
CONCLUSIONPML protein may play an important role in the early stage of SCC, and its overexpression may contribute to the carcinogenesis and metastasis of SCC.

Objective To examine whether Tim-3 plays a protective role in paraquat poisoning induced excessive immune response and tissue damage based on the critical roles of Tim-3 controlling inflammatory response. Methods A paraquat poisoning model was established in wild type and in Tim-3 transgenic C57BL/6 mice by intraperitoneal injection of paraquat (40 mg/kg) .In addition, C57BL/6 mice with paraquat poisoning were injected with Tim-3 soluble protein( sTim-3) or control protein to see the effect of Tim-3 blocking on the progression of paraquat poisoning.Samples were collected at 6 and 24 h after paraquat injection respectively and were examined for tissue damage, cytokine expression and paraquat metabolism. Results After paraquat poisoning, there was significantly attenuated tissue damage in the lungs and kidneys and decreased TNF-α,IL-6 and IL-1 beta expression in the PBMCs or in the serum from Tim-3 transgenic mice compared to wild type mice. The serum concentration of paraquat in Tim-3 transgenic mice was also significantly decreased. However, in sTim-3 treated paraquat poisoning mice, there was significantly increased cytokine expression and tissue damage compared to control protein treated mice. The in vitro data showed that Tim-3 signaling negatively regulated macrophages mediated inflammatory response. Conclusion Tim-3 plays a critical role in maintaining the homeostasis after paraquat poisoning. Further investigation on the regulatory roles of Tim-3 in inflammation will shed new light on the pathogenesis of paraquat poisoning and provide new therapeutic strategies.

OBJECTIVE:
To observe the curative effect of Jieminqufeng decoction to the rats of allergic rhinitis and study the mechanism by which it treats allergic rhinitis.
METHOD:
Forty wistar rats were divided into 4 groups at random. There are Jieminqufeng decoction group, cetirizine group, model control group and normal control group. The rats of allergic rhinitis were established with ovalbumin. We surveyed the behavioral changes of rats, searched eosinophilic granulocytes in the nasal secretion, detected the contents of cAMP and cGMP in the blood plasma and nasal mucosa.
RESULT:
The model control group had typical symptoms of allergic rhinitis and the eosinophilic granulocytes could be found more frequently. The contents of cAMP and cAMP/cGMP rose in the blood plasma and nasal mucosa (P < 0.01). However, the changes of jieminqufeng decoction group were small.
CONCLUSION
The jieminqufeng decoction is an effective drug to allergic rhinitis. Its possible mechanism is that it changes the contents of cAMP and cGMP, lessens inflammatory reaction and blocks up the allergy.

Chinese Journal of Pharmacology and Toxicology 2024;38(5):392-400
Ischemic stroke, due to its high prevalence and mortality, has become one of the most important public health concerns globally.Nerve cell damage is the main biological event in its patho-logical process and there is still a lack of effective neuroprotective drugs for clinical use.Numerous studies have shown that inhibitions of histone deacetylases(HDACs)can exert neuroprotective effects in ischemic stroke.Due to the multiple types of HDACs and the relatively poor specificity of HDAC inhib-itors,it has been difficult to identify any HDAC that plays a key role in ischemic stroke.ClassⅠHDACs include four members:HDAC1,HDAC2,HDAC3,and HDAC8,and have been more in-depth in isch-emic stroke. The complex mechanisms of classⅠHDAC inhibitors that have been discovered so far involve neural cell function, neuroinflammation and blood-brain barriers. This article is intended to study the regulatory role of classⅠHDACs in ischemic stroke in the hopes of providing reference for the developments of effective drugs targeting HDACs.

OBJECTIVETo report on the result of thalassemia screening and genetic diagnosis for pregnant women from Guiyang region.
METHODSPrenatal screening for thalassemia was carried out based on erythrocyte parameters and hemoglobin electrophoresis. Single-tube multiplex GAP-PCR and PCR-reverse dot blot hybridization were performed on suspected cases to identify common alpha- and beta- thalassemia mutations, and direct sequencing was used for identifying rare mutations.
RESULTSAmong 13 738 pregnant women, 1745 (12.70%) were suspected as thalassemia. In terms of native place, the provinces with highest screening-positive rates were Guangxi, Guangdong, Jiangxi and Guizhou. And the ethnic groups with highest screening-positive rates were Zhuang, Li, and Buyi. Among 801 women subjected to genetic testing, 457 (57.05%) were diagnosed with thalassemia. In total 9 genotypes of alpha- thalassemia were detected, with the most common genotypes being --/alpha alpha (63.35%), - alpha/alpha alpha (19.37%) and - alpha/alpha alpha (8.90%). Eleven genotypes of beta- thalassemia were detected, with the most common genotypes being CD17/N (42.91%), CD41-42/N (32.46%) and IVS-II-654/N (11.94%). Two cases were detected with rare beta-thalassemia mutations (CD54-58/N and IVS-I-130/N).
CONCLUSIONThe screening-positive rate of thalassemia among pregnant women in Guiyang region is relatively high. The rates have shown substantial difference in terms of native place and ethnic group. Thalassemia-related mutations in Guizhou region have a diverse spectrum, which showed certain difference from those of other regions.
