OBJECTIVETo investigate the penile erectile function of hospitalized male patients with cardiovascular diseases, the incidence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in this cohort, and the relationship of ED with cardiovascular diseases and its risk factors.
METHODSUsing a self-designed questionnaire, we conducted an investigation among the hospitalized patients in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases of the First and Second Affiliated Hospitals of Xi'an Jiaotong University. We measured their body height, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference, and blood pressure, obtained their personal data, past history, metabolic indexes, and erectile function scores by IIEF-5, and analyzed the risk factors of ED using univariate and multivariate logistic regression and OR analyses.
RESULTSTotally, 225 valid questionnaires were included in this investigation, which showed a 66.7% incidence of ED, 15.8% mild, 27.0% mild to moderate, 17.6% moderate, and 6.3% severe. The incident rates of ED in the 18-35 yr, 36-49 yr, 50-65 yr, and > 65 yr age groups were 13.6%, 39.1%, 89.2%, and 91.2%, respectively. Univariate logistic regression analysis manifested that the risk factors of ED in the patients with cardiovascular diseases included age (OR = 3.122, 95% CI 2.040-4.779), smoking (OR = 1.768, 95% CI 1.209-2.584), BMI (OR = 1.261, 95% CI 1.114-1.427), total cholesterol (OR = 1.77, 95% CI 1.339-2.340), TC/HDL (OR =1.715, 95% CI 1.349-2.181), hypertension (OR = 1.717, 95% CI 1.110-2.658), and coronary heart disease (OR = 2.235, 95% CI 1.169-4.275), while multivariate logistic regression analysis showed the risk factors to be age (OR = 4.99, 95% CI 2.264-10.998), financial condition, (OR = 2.804, 95% CI 1.127-6.976), smoking (OR = 2.109, 95% CI 1.179-3.772), BMI (OR = 1.414, 95% CI 1.136-1.760), and TC/HDL (OR = 2.001, 95% CI 1.016-3.943).
CONCLUSIONThe incidence of ED is high in hospitalized patients with cardiovascular diseases and rises with the increase of age. Age, smoking, financial condition, BMI, and TC/HDL are the risk factors of both ED and cardiovascular diseases, and financial condition is closely associated with ED.

Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2016;20(37):5580-5587
BACKGROUND:Mkx (Mohawk, transcription factor) is one of the crucial factors in tendon formation, development and differentiation.
OBJECTIVE:To summarize the molecular structure, distribution and function of Mkx and its research process in the signaling pathways during tendon differentiation.
METHODS:The first author retrieved the databases of CqVip, CNKI and Medline from1990 to 2016 using the keywords of“Mkx, Mohawk, Irxl, tendon, tendon differentiation, tissue engineering, TGFβ, stem cel”in Chinese and English, respectively. The articles related to research process of Mkx in tendon tissue engineering were retrieved, and a total of 55 literatures were enrol ed final y.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Mkx that expresses in various mesoderm-derived tissues plays an important role in the formation and development of tendon and tissue-engineered tendon formation. Although Mkx does not directly act on Scx (Scleraxis), it can regulate the differentiation of tendon progenitor cel s via transforming growth factor-β2 signaling pathway. Cel s from different species and different cel lines as wel as various cytokines for certain make different effects on Mkx involved in tendon tissue engineering.

Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2017;15(1):8-13
Objective:To investigate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at Neiguan (PC 6) and Baihui (GV 20) by observing the changes of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein(C/EBP) homologous protein (CHOP) and caspase-12 gene expressions in rats after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), and explore whether the apoptosis pathway of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is involved in the protective mechanisms of EA.
Methods:Sixty rats were randomly assigned to five groups (12 in each group): a normal control group (group A), a sham-operation group (group B), an operation group (group C), an Edaravone group (group D) and an EA group (group E). The cerebral IRI rat model was induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) using intraluminal monofilament. 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining was adopted in the measurement of cerebral infarction volume. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to determine the mRNA expressions of CHOP and caspase-12.
Results: Compared with group A and group B, the volume of cerebral infarction and mRNA expressions of CHOP and caspase-12 in group C, group D and group E were increased, with statistical significances (P<0.05 orP<0.01); compared with group C, the volume of cerebral infarction and mRNA expressions of CHOP and caspase-12 in group D and group E were decreased significantly (P<0.05 orP<0.01); there were no significant differences between group D and group E in comparing the above items (P>0.05).
Conclusion:EA at Neiguan (PC 6) and Baihui (GV 20) can effectively suppress the volume of cerebral infarction. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism of EA at Neiguan (PC 6) and Baihui (GV 20) is possibly related to the down-regulation of CHOP and caspase-12 mRNA expressions, so as to decrease cell apoptosis.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect and underlying mechanism of Gypsophila elegans isoorientin on the proliferation and apoptosis of human HepG2 cells. METHODS HepG2 cells were treated with isoorientin 5,10,20,40,80 and 160μmol?L-1 for 24,48 and 72 h,respectively. Cell survival was analyzed by MTT assay. HepG2 cells were treated with isoorientin 5,10 and 20μmol?L-1 for 48 h before the lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)level was detected. After treatment with isoorientin for 24 h, the variation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was monitored by a fluorescence probe H2DCF-DA. HepG2 apoptosis and mitochondria membrane potential(MMP)were evaluated by flow cytometry. The activi?ties of caspase 3,8 and 9 were determined by colorimetry. The mRNA expression of Bcl-2 and Bax was determined by RT-PCR,and the protein expression of Bcl-2, Bax and cytochrome c was detected by Western blotting. RESULTS Isoorientin(5-160μmol?L-1)inhibited HepG2 cell survial in a concen?tration-dependent manner, the 50%inhibitory concentration(IC50)was 62.7±9.1,47.2±11.4 and(18.2± 7.5)μmol?L-1 after treatment with isoorientin for 24,48 and 72 h,respectively. Compared with the cell control group, treatment with isoorientin 5,10 and 20μmol?L-1 significantly increased the LDH level and cell apoptosis rate(P<0.05). Moreover, isoorientin 10 and 20μmol?L-1 notably increased the production of ROS,decreased the MMP(P<0.05),and increased the activities of caspase 3 and 9. RT-PCR analysis and Western blotting showed that isoorientin significantly decreased the mRNA and protein expressions of Bcl-2,decreased the mRNA and protein expressions of Bax(P<0.05),and inhibited the protein expression of cytochrome c(P<0.05). CONCLUSION Isoorientin inhibits HepG2 cell prolif?eration, but promotes cell apoptosis, which is closely related to the regulation of the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway.
