Microbiology 1992;0(02):-
Iron uptake mechanism of Vibrio alginolyticus was primarily investigated. V.alginolyticus could survive in the medium with high-concentration iron chelator. The strain of V. alginolyticus isolated from diseased fish produced more siderophore than that from marine environment. The extract of siderophore from V. alginolyticus could stimulate the growth of Escherichia coli mutant AN93. Under iron limitation, the growth rate was decreased and several outer membrane proteins were induced. Adding iron into the iron-limited medium the normal growth could be recovered.

Objective To determine the morphology, bacteria and endotoxin content of bio-films on the inner surface of PVC tubes in hemodialysis water treatment system. Methods We dissolved biofilms of segments before and after reverse osmosis machine for bacterial count and identification. We studied biofilm structure of segments before and after reverse osmosis machine with eyes and scanning electron microscope. Biofilms of all 7 segments were dissolved for qualitative and quantitative assay of endotoxin. Results The inner surface of segment before reverse osmosis machine was homogeneously distributed with activated carbon powder deposition. The segment after reverse osmosis machine was normal. With scanning electron microscope, biofilm with successive surface and sandwich was found on the inner surface of segment before reverse osmosis machine, formed by clustering bacillus, activated carbon powder and some coccus. Bacteria of the same shape and length were found on segment after reverse osmosis machine, but fewer and looser. Bacterial culture and identification showed the former was mostly gram-negative bacillus, the latter was only a few micrococcus. Endotox-in of biofilm was between 2. 0 EU/mL and 4. 0 EU/mL. Quantitative assay showed: segment after softener (2.821 ±0. 807) EU/mL; segment after active charcoal canister(3. 635 ±0. 427) EU/ mL; segment before reverse osmosis machine (3.687 ±0.271) EU/mL; segment after reverse osmosis machine (2. 041 ±0. 295) EU/mL; exit of power pump (1. 983 ±0. 390) EU/mL; the 1st dead space (2. 373 ± 0. 535) EU/mL; and the 2nd dead space (2. 858 ± 0. 690) EU/mL. Conclusion Biofilms are found on the inner surface of segment before and after reverse osmosis machine . Endotoxin level from high to low is as follows: segment before reverse osmosis machine, segment after active charcoal canister, the 2 nd dead space, segment after softener, the 1 st dead space, segment after reverse osmosis machine, exit of power pump. The character of the bacteria and endotoxin of the biofilm can help us find better ways to control them.

In temporomandibular disorders (TMD), pain takes place when neuropeptides stimulate synovial tissue to produce several cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, which activate neurons and glia of synovial membrane at the bilaminar regions of temporomandibular joint (TMJ). It has been reported that, after neurogenic differentiation, the synovial mesenchymal stem cells (SMSCs), deriving from TMJ, possess the same cytological features as the neuronal cells. This study examined the ability of substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) to stimulate SMSCs and neurogenic SMSCs secreting inflammatory cytokines during TMD, evaluated the mutual effects of inflammatory cytokines and neuropeptides and tested the analgesic effect of hyaluronic acid (HA). The levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in SMSCs and neurogenic SMSCs in the presence of neuropeptides were measured by ELISA. SP and CGRP produced by SMSCs and neurogenic SMSCs were determined by RT-PCR and Western blotting. The results showed that the expression of SP and CGRP was significantly enhanced in the neurogenic SMSCs in response to IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α, and the effect was remarkably inhibited by HA. IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α, in return, could be enhanced in the neurogenic SMSCs upon stimulation by SP and CGRP. Neuropeptides and inflammatory cytokines might work mutually on the TMD pain. The HA-mediated analgesic effect may be implicated in the inhibition of SP and CGRP expression in neurogenic SMSCs.

Background Serum cystatin C levels can be used to predict morbidity and mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease. However, the clinical relevance of serum cystatin C levels in patients with hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) has rarely been investigated. We designed the present study to investigate whether serum cystatin C levels are associated with cardiac structural and functional alterations in hypertensive patients. Methods We enrolled 823 hypertensive patients and classified them into two groups:those with LVH (n=287) and those without LVH (n=536). All patients underwent echocardiography and serum cystatin C testing. We analyzed the relationship be-tween serum cystatin C levels and LVH. Results Serum cystatin C levels were higher in hypertensive patients with LVH than in those without LVH (P<0.05). Using linear correlation analysis, we found a positive correlation between serum cystatin C levels and interven-tricular septal thickness (r=0.247, P<0.01), posterior wall thickness (r=0.216, P<0.01), and left ventricular weight index (r=0.347, P<0.01). When analyzed by multiple linear regression, the positive correlations remained between serum cystatin C and interventricular septal thickness (β=0.167, P<0.05), posterior wall thickness (β=0.187, P<0.05), and left ventricular weight index (β=0.245, P<0.01). Con-clusion Serum cystatin C concentration is an independent marker for hypertensive LVH.

Objective To determine the distribution profile of apocrine sweat glands in axillary region of patients with axillary osmidrosis, and to compare their distribution at different sites. Methods Fifteen patients with axillary osmidrosis were enrolled in this study from September to December 2010.All the patients underwent surgical removal of apocrine sweat glands under direct vision.Full-thickness skin tissue measuring 2 mm in width was excised down to the axillary superficial fascia at the incisional surgical sites from five patients.Five points, which were at the center of axillary region (point 1),1 cm away from the center of axillary region (point 2),1 cm inside the edge of axillary hair-bearing area (point 3),the edge of axillary hair-bearing area (point 4),and 1 cm outside the edge of axillary hair-bearing area (point 5),were marked, and dark red, rough granular subcutaneous tissue was obtained at these points in 10 patients with axillary osmidrosis. Results The secretory portion of apocrine sweat glands was mainly distributed in the reticular dennis and superficial subcutaneous adipose tissue, but no apocrine sweat glands were obs erred in the epidermis, dermal papilla or axillary superficial fascia. The distribution profile of apocrine sweat glands was consistent with that of axillary hairs. There were numerous apocrine sweat glands in the center of axillary region, but only a small number at the edge of axillary hair-bearing area, and no apocrine sweat gland was observed at 1 cm outside the edge. The percentage of apocrine sweat gland area at point 1-5 was 74.1%,46.6%,25.3%,2.1%,and 0 respectively, with significant differences between point 1 and 2 (t--29.78,P< 0.01),point 2 and 3 (t--9.76,P< 0.01),point 3 and 4 (t =20.83,P< 0.01),but not between point 4 and 5 (t =1.96,P > 0.05).Conclusions During the surgical treatment of axillary osmidrosis, the removal of apocrine sweat glands should be extended to the reticular dennis and superficial subcutaneous adipose tissue in depth and the edge of axillary hair-bearing area in width, and there is no need to blindly increase the extent of removal.
10.Relationship of remote sensing normalized differential vegetation index to Anopheles density and malaria incidence rate.
Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2006;19(2):130-132
OBJECTIVETo study the relationship of remote sensing normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI) to Anopheles density and malaria incidence rate.
METHODSData of monthly average climate, environment, Anopheles density and malaria incidence rate, and remote sensing NDVI were collected from 27 townships of 10 counties in southeastern Yunnan Province from 1984 to 1993. The relationship of remote sensing ecological proxy index, NDVI, to Anopheles density and malaria incidence rate was studied by principal component analysis, factor analysis and grey correlation analysis.
RESULTSThe correlation matrix showed that NDVI highly correlated with Anopheles density in 4 townships of Mengla, Jinghong, and Yuanjiang counties, but in other 23 townships the relationship was not clear. Principal component and factor analyses showed that remote sensing NDVI was the representative index of the first principal component and the first common factor of Anopheles density evaluation. Grey correlation analysis showed that in rainy season NDVI had a high grey correlation with Anopheles density and malaria incidence rate. The grey correlation analysis showed that in rainy season the grey degree of NDVI correlated with Anopheles. Minimus density was 0.730, and 0.713 with Anopheles sinensis density, and 0.800 with malarial incidence rate.
CONCLUSIONRemote sensing NDVI can serve as a sensitive evaluation index of Anopheles density and malaria incidence rate.
