Objective To investigate the arteries supplying the temporalis. Methods Ten cadavers were examined after embalming with a fluid containing 10% formaldehyde. For detailed examination of the supplying arteries of the temporalis, a mixture of latex and barium sulfate in a ratio of 1∶1 was injected into both carotid arteries of 10 fresh cadavers. The skin and soft tissue were removed from the temporal and lateral regions of the head, and the superficial temporal artery was dissected. As soon as the origin of the medial temporal artery was identified, the zygomatic arch was cut and lifted. The maxillary artery with its branches of the infratemporal region was carefully dissected. After identification of all vessels of the infratemporal region, the temporalis was removed, and then radiographic examination of the injected arteries was performed using 2.5 mA and 40 kV. The injected arteries were clearly identified on the radiographic images, and the area supplied by each artery was determined. Planimetric evaluation of these areas was performed. Results In all specimens, three arteries supplying the temporalis were identified: the anterior deep temporal artery that supplied the anterior part between 11 % and 25% of the temporalis with a mean of 17%, the posterior deep temporal artery that supplied the central part of 27% to 50% of the lateral aspect of the temporalis, with a mean of 38% and a branch of the superficial temporal artery, the medial temporal artery, which supplied the posterior part and in 25% the posterior and the upper part of the temporalis, resulting in 30% to 58% of the muscle's lateral aspect, with a mean of 45%. Conclusion According to a detailed description of the arterial supply of the temporalis, two different pedicled flaps using the anterior or central part of the temporalis can be selectively used for reconstructive surgery.

Objectives To compare the safety and efficacy of radial artery access versus femoral artery access for percutaneous coronary intervention in acute myocardial infarction population. Methods From June 2004 to December 2006, 446 patients with acute myocardial infarction treated with percutaneous stenting were reviewed retrospectively. The radial artery approach was used in 242 patients, and the femoral artery approach in 204 patients. The success of the procedure, procedure duration, X-ray exposition, volume of contrast, incidence of major adverse cardiac events and complications were compared between the radial artery and femoral artery approach. Results Total procedure duration, X-ray exposition, the immediate success of the procedure and the proportion of patients with reperfusion time above 60min are higher in patients with radial artery acess than that with femoral artery access [(62. 1 ± 23. 4) min vs(56. 8 ± 16. 7)min,(2829. 4 ± 1365.2) mGY vs (2352. 3 ± 903.1) mGY, 4% vs 0.9% and 7.44% vs 2.94%respectively, all P < 0. 05]. Conclusions In non-selected patients with acute myocardial infarction treated with primary stent implantation, the success rate of the radial artery approach is lower than the femoral artery approach and could prolong the reperfusion time. It is suitable to change artery access immediately if abnormality is found via radial artery access.

Objective To investigate spiral CT,PET/CT and clinical manifestations in non-HIV infectious penicilliposis marneffei lung disease, to improve diagnostic level of this disease. Methods Imaging manifestations of 6 cases of non-HIV infectious penicilliposis marneffei confirmed by bronchofiberscope lung biopsy and/or pus culture were analyzed retrospectively All cases underwent chest CT,two had brain MRI,and two had PET/CT scan before treatment.Imaging appearances were observed and combined with clinical dates and literatures. Results Unilateral lung lesion was detected in 1 case, bilateral lungs lesions in 5 cases.Multiple patchy consolidation, stripe shadow in bilateral lungs or right lung were found in 3 cases, multiple nodes in 2 cases, mass with nodes in 1 case.Among 6 cases, 2 had septa interlobulare thickness,1 had tracheal fistula,2 had pericardium and pleura involvement,4 had bone destruction,1 had the brainand liver involvement.6 cases showed multiple lymphadenectasis, amalgamation and necrosis in bilateral hilar, mediastinaand the neck.2 had abdominal cavity and or retroperitoneal lymphadenectasis. On PET/CT,2 cases showed high uptake, and the range of SUV value were 1.4-13.9.Initial misdiagnosis by imaging was found in 5 cases.6 patients recovered after anti fungus treatment. Conclusion Imaging appearances of non-HIV infectious penicilliposis marneffei mainly reveals as multiple patchy consolidation, nodes and mass in bilateral lungs, all accompany with lymphadenectasis, many with bone destruction, lack of specificity, which needs lesion biopsy and pus culture to make confirmed diagnosis.

To study whether cultured bovine trabecluar meshwork cells (BTMC) are capable of expressing tTG in protein and at mRNA level, BTMC were cultured in vitro and passaged three times, then the cells were transferred onto or cultured on sterile cover or submitted to isolation of RNA with Trizol, and the expression of tTG was detected by immunohistochemical technique and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) respectively. Our results showed that tTG immunostaining was positive in the cytoplasm and rarely in the nucleus of cultured BTMC. No immunostaining was seen in the negative control. Moreover, a single RT-PCR amplified product whose sequence and size were in accordance with our known parameters was obtained. The expression of tTG in cultured BTMC was confirmed in protein and at mRNA level. BMTC is available more readily for the investigation of the relationship between tTG and primary open-angle glaucoma.

Objective To observe the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on the expression of FasL mRNA and caspase-3 protein in renal tissue after renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in order to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Methods Rats were randomly divided into thrcc groups: sham group(n=8),IRI group(n=8) and IRI+HBO group(n=8).The IRI group and the IRI+HBO group recieved 45 minutes hibateral renal ischima and the IRI +HBO group received additional HBO therapy at the 1st,24th and 48th hour after ischemia. The kidneys were removed at the end of HBO therapy.Malondialdehyde (MDA) level and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were measured to determine the extent of oxidative stress. The expression of FasL mRNA and caspase-3 protein was detected by quantitative real-time PCR and immunohistochemical staining in renal tissue respectively. Results Compared with the sham group,MDA level increased markedly and SOD activity decreased markedly after ischemia. After HBO treatment,MDA level decreased and SOD activity increased significantly (P <0.05).In IRI group, the expression of FasL mRNA and caspase-3 protein were higher than those in the sham group (P<0.01),which were reduced significantly by HBO treatment (P<0.01).Conclusion The expression of FasL mRNA and caspase-3 protein increases along with the lasting of reperfusion and HBO exhibites protection against cell apoptosis through improving the antioxidant-oxidant balance and reducing IRI in acute stage of IRI.
