The ancient teacher-disciple tradition is regarded as one of the most celebrated practices within the Chinese medicine world. Such traditions of secrecy, private wisdom and honor are deeply rooted in the theories of Confucianism. This paper only explores the surface of this ancient culture, by investigating relevant popular ancient texts and common Chinese proverbs, as well as utilizing personal experiences, in order to reflect on how the ancient Chinese perceived such practices within their own society and how secret teaching was passed on from teacher to student, including the revelation of secret formulas and their importance and how that tradition differs from our modern-day perspectives. Various rare manuscripts from the author's personal library are employed in order to provide relative examples of the importance of secret knowledge, and how these secrets applied in the traditional healing.

The antitussive activity assay for the root extraction of Disporum cantoniense was carried out with coughing mice induced by ammonia liquor. The results showed that the ethanol and water extractions of D. cantoniense possess strong antitussive activity, and the high dose of the former was better than positive control, and then the constituents of the ethanol extraction were separated and purified by various modern chromatographic techniques. Their structures were identified by physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic data. As a result, eight compounds were isolated and identified as stigmast-4-en-3-one(1), (22E, 24R)-ergosta-5, 7, 22-trien-3beta-ol(2), obtucarbamate A(3), obtucarbamate B(4), neotigogenin(5), azo-2, 2'-bis[Z-(2,3-dihydroxy-4-methyl-5-methoxy) phenyl ethylene] (6),dimethyl {[carbonylbis (azanediyl)] bis( 2-methyl-5, 1-phenylene) j dicarbamate (7) , and quercetin-3-O-pB-D-glucopyranoside(8). All compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time, and the result of bioactivity-directed isolation showed that compounds 3, 4, and 6 had obvious effect on antitussive activity, and compound 6 had the same level as positive control.

Objective To investigate the combination effect using iron chelators deferasirox and cisplatin on A549 cell proliferation and apoptosis and to provide evidences to explore an effective way to treat lung cancer. Methods Lung adeno?carcinoma cells were cultured by conventional way, with administration of different concentrations of deferasirox and cisplat?in. Cell growth inhibition was observed under an inverted microscope. Proliferation inhibition was evaluated by MTT assay. Morphological changes of cell apoptosis was detected using DAPI,AO/EB straning and flow cytometry. Results After a cer?tain time of incubation with different concentrations of the combined drugs,the cell number reduce significantly, which was counted under invert microscope. Cells were dispersed with each other and adherent cells appear shrunken and poor in re?fractivity. MTT assay showed that inhibition of cell proliferation was in a concentration-time-dependent manner. Chromatin condensation, nuclear condensation and other typical apoptotic morphology were detected after DAPI and AO/EB straning. Flow cytometry showed that apoptosis increased with rising drug concentration. So combination therapy was significantly pro-apoptotic. Conclusion Deferasirox has the ability to inhibit proliferation of A549 cells and can promote tumor cell apoptosis and enhances cancer cell tolerance when combined with cisplatin. It can also reduce the amount and toxicity of cis?platin. It provides a basis for finding an effective way to treat lung cancer.

AIM: To evaluate the clinical results of capsular tension ring (CTR) implantation in phacoemulsification for eyes with congenital lens subluxation.METHODS: This study comprised 18 patients (31 eyes) with congenital ectopia lentis.All patients received phacoemulsification with CTR and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.Visual acuity before and after surgery were examined.IOL decentration were measured with Image-Pro Plus image processing software.The complications were also recorded preoperatively and postoperatively.RESULTS: Uncorrected vision of all eyes increased after surgery, and all cases had different degree of IOL decentration after surgery.Two eyes received CTR scleral fixation 3mo after surgery because the IOL decentration aggravated during the follow-up period.CONCLUSION: Phacoemulsification with CTR and IOL implantation is effective and safe for congenital lens subluxation.The implantation of CTR increase the stability of the capsular bag, improve the safety of surgery, and maintain the right position of IOL.CTR scleral fixation is a effective supplement for progressive cases.

Objective To observe the effect of low dosage of uhrashortwave(USW) on infarction volume, B cell lymphocytoma-xl (Bcl-xl) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-?) after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion in rats and discuss its acting mechanisms. Methods Focal ischemia-reperfusion model was established in 25 rats by re- versible right middle cerebral artery occlusion with filament. The right side cerebral ischemia was lasted for 2 hours and then followed with 24 hours of reperfusion. The content of neurological deficits were evaluated by the Zea-Longa 5-degree scoring system to select rats. After surgery, the rats were divided into 3 groups: blank control group, control group and USW treatment group. The brain of all rats was taken at 24 hours after reperfusion. The cerebral infarction volume, the expression of Bcl-xl and TNF-?were measured and analyzed. Results Twenty-five rats were used in the analysis of results. Objective To evaluate the application and initial experience of laparoscopy in kidneypreserving surgery for savage giant hydronephrosis. Methods This series included 6 cases of savage gianthydronephrosis (2 men and 4 women;age range,15 -57 years;mean age,28 years).Of them 5 cases weredetected when visiting doctors due to flank pain,abdominal mass,and the rest one by B-ultrasound duringpregnancy.Four cases had hydronephrosis on the left;and 2 cases,on the right.The quantity of hydronephro-sis was 2250 -8300 ml,respectively.None had development on IVU examination.Of them,3 cases had con-genital ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction;2 had multiple stones in infracalices secondary to UPJ ob-struction;1 had stones in pelvis with polyp formation.Relieving obstruction,pyeloplasty,nephroplication andnephropexy were performed via laparoscope. Results All the operations were successful.The operativetime was 2.5 -5.0 h;the blood loss was 50 -150 ml,and the mean postoperative hospital stay was 7.2 d.The postoperative follow-up ranged from 3 to 24 months. Three months after operation,B-ultrasound showedthat giant hydronephrosis was markedly relieved in 5 cases (the renal sinus separation was 1.8 m,2.0 cm,2.5 cm,2.5 cm and 2.8cm,respectively),and in the rest 1 case the kidney was slightly smaller than nor-mal.IVU examination was performed every 3 months after operation, and different degrees of developmentappeared in all cases.During the follow-up,no obvious ureteropelvic anastomotic stricture was found on retro-grade pyelography (RGP). Conclusions The protective renal treatment via laparoscopy for savage gianthydronephrosis is a feasible and minimally invasive technique that provides the same clinical and radiograph-ic results as open operation.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of estimating chronologic age based on the grades of mandibular third molar development. To evaluate whether mandibular third molar could be used as an indicator for estimating the age under or over 18 years. METHODS: The mineralization status of mandibular third molar of 1 845 individuals aged 10 - 30 was graded and marked based on Demirjian's classification of grades reformed by Orhan. Gender difference was examined by t-test. A cubic regression model was established to analyze the correlation between third molar and chronologic age. Each grade of age cumulative distribution diagram and ROC curve was respectively performed to evaluate the relationship between third molar and the age of 18. Using Bayes discriminant analysis, an equation was established for estimating the age of 18. RESULTS: The inner-rater reliability was 0.903. Statistical analysis showed a moderate correlation between age and grade. Significant differences of both genders were found only in grade D and H (P < 0.05). Males at the grades from 1 to D and females at the grades from 1 to C were under 18 years old, and both males and females at grade H were over 18 years old. The area under the ROC curve was 0.797 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Third molar development shows a high correlation with age, and combined with other indicators, it can be used to estimate the age of 18.

ObjectiveTo find incidence rate of no-suicide self injury (NSSI) of junior school students in Dalian city,and to provide some evidences for interventions for them.MethodsRandomly drawn out 1463 junior school students were served as study objects.All objects were evaluated with Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory (OSI) and self-made investigate questionnaire,75 no-suicide self-injury were screening out.ResultsThe incidence ratio of NSSI of junior school students was 5.4％,there were no significant different between the male and female students.The highest incidence ratio was found at 13 years old.The average age for first-time self-harm was (12.24±1.344) years old.There were no significant different between the male and the female students( t=- 1.415,P =0.163 ) ; Cutting Skin was the most common way of NSSI ( 12.0％ ) ; Ideation of 80％ of the NSSI was from their Own Idea.2.7％ of the NSSI can Feel Relief through NSSI behavior.93％ of NSSI was to regulate their mood.100％ students of NSSI against NSSI behavior byReading Books or Listening Music,in which 60％ of NSSI believe the method was helpful to relax their mind.78.5％ of the NSSI resisted NSSI behavior by Watching TV or Playing Games,but they did not get enough effects.60％ NSSI considered themselves without the need to treat.41.3％ of NSSI had never been to treat.2.5％ of NSSI went to hospital for the wound.ConclusionNSSI is often be found in junior school students,and highest ratio is at 13 years old.The most common method of NSSI is Cutting Skin.More NSSI aim is to release their emotion,and self-injury behavior accordance with their inner thoughts.NSSI behavior often is secret,and reading and listening to music is cut off from the relative effective way to conduct.NSSI are seldom to initiative doctor,and education organ,parents and society in a three-dimensional one of the system is necessary.

Objective To evaluate the value of volume measured by multi-slice spiral CT in preoperative N staging of gastric canc-er.Methods CT data of 1 93 cases of gastric cancer proven pathologically were collected and analyzed.Volume of the tumor was cal-culated in the portal phase,and the correlation between the results and N staging was evaluated.ROC curve was used to get diagnos-tic value to differentiate N stages.Results Intra-observer Kappa value was 0.77 (P < 0.05 ),0.72 (P < 0.05 ),Inter-observer Kappa value was 0.69 (P <0.05).The tumor volume data was positively correlated with different N stages (r=0.568,P <0.05). ROC curve showed that the volume could help differentiate between stage N0 and stage N1 - N3 (cutoff 12.06 cm3 ,sensitivity 55%,specificity 95%),stage N0-N1 and stage N2-N3 (cutoff 22.35 cm3 ,sensitivity 66%,specificity 86%),stage N0-N2 and stage N3 (cutoff 25.95 cm3 ,sensitivity 62%,specificity 89%)respectively.Conclusion The volume of gastric cancer measured by CT plays an important part in predicting lymph node metastasis staging and optimizing individualized clinical strategy for patients.
