OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of Haikun Shenxi on the expression of platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) and mRNA in renal tissue of rats with adriamycin nephropathy.
METHODRat model was established by unilateral nephrectomy and injecting adriamycin intraperitoneally. The adriamycin-induced nephrotic rats were randomly divided into 6 groups: normal group, sham operation group, model group, lotensin treatment group, Haikun Shenxi low and high dose treatment groups (0.77, 0.08 mg x kg(-1). Ten weeks later, the 24 hour urine protein and blood biochemistry examinations and renal pathologic changes were observed, and the expression of PDGF-BB and mRNA was measured using immunohistochemical method.
RESULTCompared with model group, proteinuria and the levels of serum creatinine (Scr) , urea nitrogen (BUN) were decreased obviously in both Haikun Shenxi low and high dose groups. The expression of PDGF-BB and mRNA was mostly presented in cytoplasm of renal tubular epithelial cells and mesangial area, and it could be reduced significantly after treatment (P < 0. 05).
CONCLUSIONThe level of PDGF-BB and mRNA is high in renal tissue of adriamycin-induced nephrotic rats. This progress could be effectively inhibited by Haikun Shenxi and the mechanism may be that it can control the excessive expression of PDGF-BB and mRNA.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the clinical use of virtual endoscopy in the traumatic ossicular chain disruption with intact tympanum pre- and post-operation.
METHODSThe series consisted of 17 cases with temporal bone fracture and 4 cases with tympanum contusion. All were examinated with a high resolution spiral CT by axial and oblique coronal planes of the temporal bone. Three-dimensional reconstruction was processed using the virtual endoscopy software. Ten cases of traumatic ossicular chain disruption were performed with intact canal wall epitympanum approach Ossicular reposition. Eleven patients with facial paralysis were performed ossiculoplasty and facial nerve decompression. Nine cases re-examinated virtual endoscopy after operation.
RESULTSSeventeen cases with temporal bone fractures and traumatic ossicular chain disruption, including 3 cases with the long process of the incus fracture, 9 cases with incus bone dislocation, and 5 cases with incus shedding. In the 4 cases of tympanum contusion, 2 cases with incus bone dislocation, 2 cases with incus bone shedding. The axial plane of temporal bone CT could only showed the fracture line and the hammer and incus bone irregular shape. Perioperatively virtual endoscopy showed hammer incus joint separation, incus stirrup dislocation and joint deformation. Surgery confirmed that the incus body was torn off below the hammer following bone displacement, soft tissue wrapped articular surface, incus and stapes just connected with soft tissue. During the tympanum contusion operation could see incus bone-shedding was valgus. Three to six months after surgery, re-examinated virtual endoscopy showed incus bone dislocation ossicular chain was restored to normal, temporal bone shedding ossicular chain connecting almost intact Hearing increased significantly to the level of practical hearing. The coincidence of traumatic disruption of the ossicular chain by virtual endoscopy and surgery was 100%.
CONCLUSIONVirtual endoscopy was valuable for providing accurate assessment and individual program for treating and following-up the traumatic ossicular chain disruption.

OBJECTIVETo investigate antagonism effects of total flavonoids from Chrysanthemum morifolium. (TFCM) against lead induced oxidative injury.
METHODNinety male mice were randomly divided into 9 groups. Mice except normal control group inject lead acetate every other day for 20 days. In the next 10 d, drugs were orally administrated to mice once a day. After the last aministration, mice were sacrificed and immediately subjected to necropsy. The concentration of lead, zinc and copper in blood, brain, liver and kidney were determined. The body weight, relative organ weight, antioxidant enzyme levels (GSH, GSH-Px, SOD and CAT) and lipid peroxidation products (MDA) were performed.
RESULTTFCM might antagonize the decrease of body weight and the increase of organ weight/body weight ratio. The combined treatment with TFCM and DMSA can significantly lower the lead levels in blood, brain, liver and kidney. In contrast, lead concentration in mice treated with TFCM alone did not show significant change in these organs. The other trace elements such as zinc and copper had no significant decrease after TFCM or DMSA treatment. Middle and high-dose TFCM was more effective than DMSA in increasing the activity of GSH, GSH-Px, SOD, CAT and decreasing the concentration of MDA in mice brain. In addition, high-dose TFCM was more effective than DMSA in increasing the activity of GSH-Px, CAT and decreasing the concentration of MDA in mice liver and kidney. The combined treatment with TFCM and DMSA also can reverse lipid peroxidation and increase antioxidant enzyme levels in lead poisoning mice dose-dependently, and it had more beneficial effects than treatment with DMSA alone.
CONCLUSIONTFCM might improve antioxidant defense system, reverse lipid peroxidation and protect brain, liver and kidney against lead induced oxidative damage in mice significantly.
