Chinese Journal of Pathology 2007;36(7):474-479
OBJECTIVETo clarify the various diagnostic connotations of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) and to study their prognostic implications.
METHODSClinicopathologic features and follow-up data of 40 patients with PMP diagnosed in The General Hospital of PLA were retrospectively reviewed. The cases were histologically classified into 3 subcategories: disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis (DPAM), peritoneal mucinous carcinomatosis (PMCA), and PMCA with intermediate or discordant features (PMCA-I/D). The survival rate was calculated using Kaplan-Meier method and the difference was statistically analyzed.
RESULTSTwelve of the 40 patients died on follow up. The duration of survival ranged from 2 to 348 months (medium = 37.5 months). In general, the 3-year, 5-year and 10-year survival rates were 79.0%, 69.4% and 53.0%, respectively. The mean age of the patients at the time of diagnosis was 50.3 years (age range = 22 to 76 years). The male-to-female ratio was 1:1. The age and sex of patients, frequency of operation and presence of ovarian involvement did not correlate with duration of survival. On the other hand, the presence of appendiceal tumor, parenchymal invasion of abdominal viscera, cellularity, architecture, nuclear atypia and mitotic activity of the peritoneal lesion significantly correlated with survival. There was also significant difference in survival between DPAM, PMCA-I/D and PMCA subcategories (P = 0.018). The difference in survival rate between PMCA-I/D and PMCA subgroups however was not statistically significant (P = 0.096). The outcome of DPAM was significantly better when compared with the combined group of PMCA-I/D and PMCA (P = 0.006).
CONCLUSIONSIn general, the 10-year survival rate of PMP was low, despite the relatively benign-looking or low-grade pathologic appearance. Peritoneal lesions with higher cellularity, conspicuous nuclear atypia and higher mitotic activity are associated with a lower survival rate. The prognosis was even worse in the presence of appendiceal carcinoma or parenchymal invasion of abdominal viscera. It is thus advisable to subclassify PMP into DPAM, PMCA and PMCA-I/D, due to the difference in prognostic implication.

Chinese Journal of Pathology 2011;40(7):440-443
OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical and pathological features of the mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma (MTSCC) of the kidney.
METHODSSeven cases of MTSCC were analyzed by gross examination and light microscopy. Immunostaining was performed to detect the expression of CD10, CK7, CK18, CK19, Villin, EMA, P504S and vimentin. The literature on this tumor was reviewed to discuss the histological features of MTSCC and its clinical behavior.
RESULTSThree of 7 cases were male and the other 4 were female. The mean age of the patients was 48.2 years old, with a range from 39 to 61 years. All the patients presented no symptom and their tumors were found by health examination. Tumors averaged 5.5 cm in greatest dimension (range from 4.0 cm to 9.0 cm). The tumors were well-circumscribed without capsules, and the cut surfaces were solid and soft with white-tan color. By light microscopy, tumors were composed of tightly packed, small, elongated tubules with transitions to spindle cell components. Five cases had mucinous stroma. Clear cell clusters, focal sarcomatoid differentiation, papillations and foamy macrophages were seen in several cases. Immunohistochemically, all 7 cases showed positive for CK7, five of 5 cases positive for EMA, CK18 and P504S, four of 5 cases positive for CK19, but heterogeneous for CD10, villin and vimentin expression. No evidence of local recurrence or distant metastases was identified in the 5 patients with follow-up information.
CONCLUSIONSThe mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma is a low-grade and polymorphic neoplasm. The morphology of these tumors may not be uniform with a wide histological spectrum. The tumors can be tubular predominant or spindle cells predominant with scant to abundant mucinous stroma, which coupled with the presence of other unusual features such as clear cells, papillations, foamy macrophages, necrosis and sarcomatoid differentiation. Immunohistochemically, MTSCC can express the markers from the proximal convoluted tubules to collecting tubules.

Acta Physiologica Sinica 2011;63(3):281-285
The aim of this study was to observe the electrophysiological characteristics of the isolated rat muscle spindle. The muscle spindle was isolated from rat soleus and the afferent discharge of the isolated muscle spindle was recorded by air-gap technique. In the basic physiological salt solution, the spontaneous impulses of muscle spindle were at a lower level with irregular intervals. The mean frequency of afferents was (51.78 ± 25.63) impulses/1 000 s (n = 13). The muscle spindle afferents were significantly increased and maintained over time by the addition of certain amino acids during the observation. The number of the action potential recorded per 1 000 s was 200-1 000 [mean: (687.62 ± 312.56) impulses/1 000 s, n = 17]. In addition to the typical propagated action potential, a large number of abortive spikes were observed. The results indicate that the activities of isolated muscle spindles in rats can be well maintained by the addition of certain amino acids. The results initially establish and provide the possibility for further research conducted in isolated rat muscle spindles.

Objective To investigate the state of drinking water defluorination project in Dagang district and study urinary fluoride levels and detect dental fluorosis of children aged 8 to 12, and to provide scientific basis for prevention and control of fluorosis. Methods Five defluorination projects in rural streets (towns) with highfluoride water and 2 urban water supply projects were choosen to investigate the running status in Dagang district Tianjin in 2009. Five rural and 2 urban schools were choosen to select 100 children aged 8 to 12 (for gender, age matched) in each primary school to study urinary fluoride levels and detection of dental fluorosis. Results A total of 66 defluorination projects in 73 villages were surveyed, among which 61 projects actually worked normally with using rate 92.4%(61/66). Water qualification of all projects could not be ensured due to direct project managers'lack of necessary expertise. In 2009, water qualification rate were 39.3%(24/61 )among the project normally used, with highlighted problem of biological pollution. A total of 490 children aged 8 - 12 in 5 rural towns were surveyed, dental fluorosis rate were 90%(441/490), and dental fluorosis index were 1.82. A total of 207 children aged 8 - 12in 2 urban areas were surveyed, the detection rate of dental fluorosis was 49.8%(103/207), and dental fluorosis index were 0.86. The urinary fluoride level of 230 children aged 8 - 12 in the 5 villages were surveyed. The Range of geometric mean of urinary fluoride were 1.82 - 2.70 mg/L. The urinary fluoride of 102 children aged 8 - 12 in the 2 urban area were surveyed. The Range of geometric mean of urinary fluoride were 1.53 - 1.72 mg/L. Conclusions There was phenomenon of high coverage, low utilization rate and less water consumption in the villages of Dagang district, Tianjin drinking water defluoridation projects, thus the health effects of the projects was minimum.Significant health effects is found in the defluorination projects in the urban areas with high coverage and high utilization rate. Studying new water improvment methods and new forms of water supply system is urgent for solving the problems met in the ineffective water defluorination project.

Acta Physiologica Sinica 2011;63(1):75-80
The present study aimed to study the changes of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) expression of intrafusal muscle fibers in rat soleus muscles under simulated weightlessness. The tail-suspension (SUS) rat model was used to simulate weightlessness. Forty mature female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to ambulatory control (CON), 3-day SUS, 7-day SUS, 14-day SUS and 21-day SUS groups. Immunohistochemistry ABC staining method and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used to detect the NT-3 expression of intrafusal muscle fibers in rat soleus muscles. The results from the immunohistochemistry staining technique showed that the extrafusal muscle fibers did not exhibit the NT-3-like immunoreactivity, and NT-3-like immunoreactivity was mainly expressed in nuclear bag 1 and nuclear bag 2 fibers of the muscle spindles. The ELISA results showed that the expression quantity of NT-3 in rat soleus muscles in control, 3-day SUS, 7-day SUS, 14-day SUS and 21-day SUS groups were (14.23±1.65), (14.11±1.53), (13.09±1.47), (12.45±1.51) and (9.85±1.52) pg/mg of tissue respectively. Compared to the control group, the expression quantity of NT-3 was significantly decreased after 14 days of SUS (P<0.05). After 21 days of SUS, the NT-3 expression was further reduced (P<0.01). These results suggest that simulated weightlessness induces an obvious decrease in the NT-3 expression level of intrafusal fibers in rat soleus muscles. Accompanying the simulated weightlessness extension, NT-3 expression in rat soleus muscle spindles is progressively decreased. These changes may contribute to the proprioceptive adaptations to microgravity.

To analyze the genetic characteristics of echovirus 6 (E6) isolated from meningitis and encephalitis cases in Shandong Province, China, we collected cerebrospinal fluid samples from meningitis and encephalitis cases in Shandong Province from 2007 to 2012 for virus isolation. Viral RNAs were extracted from positive isolates, and complete VP1 coding regions were amplified by RT-PCR and sequenced. Homology comparison and phylogenetic analysis were performed. Six isolates were identified as E6 by microneutralization assay and molecular typing. The homology analysis showed that the six isolates had 78. 6%-99. 8% nucleotide and 95. 5%-100. 0% amino acid identities with each other, as well as 76. 9%-78. 4% nucleotide and 92. 3%-95. 1% amino acid identities with the prototype strain (D' Amori). The phylogenetic analysis based on the integrated VP1 sequences indicated that all Shandong E6 isolates could be separated into four clusters, designated as A, B, C, and D. The six E6 isolates belonged to clusters A, B, and D. Our study reveals high genetic differences between Shandong E6 isolates and suggests different transmission lineages of E6 co-circulated in Shandong Province.

National Journal of Andrology 2008;14(2):184-188
OBJECTIVETo investigate the protective action of Epimedium against chemotherapy-induced damage to rat epididymides.
METHODSFifty 60-day-old male rats were divided into a control, a model and a treatment group. Procarbazine was injected into the abdominal cavity of the model rats at the dose of 30 mg/(kg x d). In addition to procarbazine, Epimedium was given intragastrically to the treatment group. The changes in the ultrastructure of the epididymis were observed after 10 and 20 days.
RESULTSElectron microscopy showed that the chemotherapy-induced damages to the epididymal epithelia mainly included cell swelling, local cavitation of mitochondria, tumor-like change in nucleoli, agglutination of marginal translocation of heterochromatin and cell apoptosis. The damage to the epithelial ultrastructure was slight in the treatment group as compared with the model rats. Chemotherapy significantly affected sperm concentration, sperm viability and sialic acid (SA), which were (15.59 +/- 4.01) x 10(6)/ml, (76.71 +/- 10.11)% and (19.38 +/- 9.34) g/mg prot in the model group in comparison with (10.63 +/- 3.82) x 10(6)/ml (P < 0.01), (60.03 +/- 7.54)% (P < 0.01) and (13.62 +/- 7.81) g/g prot (P < 0.05) in the control. Epimedium significantly increased sperm viability in the treatment group (60.03 +/- 7.54)% as compared with the model rats (69.90 +/- 12.58)% (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONEpimedium can lessen chemotherapy-induced damage to the epididymis and protect the reproductive function of rats.
