Objective To explore the effects of empowerment education model on glycemic control and self-management behavior of community patients with diabetes. Method A total of 120 diabetics from 2 different communities were set as the observation group and control group. The control group was treated by routine medications and health education and the observation group was intervened with empowerment education model. After intervention for 6 months, the patients′blood glucose index and the diabetes self-management behavior were assessed and compared by scale of the diabetes self-care activities (SDSCA) between the two groups. Result By the end of the study, the glycemic index and SDSCA score in the former group were both significantly decreased than those in the control group (P<0.05), indicating the patients in the experiment group had better glycemic control and self-management behaviors compared with those in the control group. Conclusions Empowerment education model can arouse the internal motivation of patients to change their behaviors from passive to active acceptance in the health education. Empowerment education model can enhance diabetes patients′self-management conduct and the glycemic level.

BACKGROUND:Current research on mesenchymal stem cels (MSCs) is mostly focused on its immune regulatory function, while little is reported on the antioxidant capacity of the cels and culture supernatant.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anti-oxidative capacity of the supernatant harvested from human fetal placenta MSCs (fPMSCs) under a condition of serum free culture. METHODS:fPMSCs were cultured with serum free media, and the supernatants of cels at passages 2-6 were colected at 48 hours after culture. Vitamin C was added into the culture medium, as a positive control, and its concentration was 100 μmol/L. The total antioxidant capacity, scavenging capacity of free radicals and antioxidant enzymatic activities of supernatants were measured. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: By comparing anti-oxidative activities of vitamin C and na?ve culture medium, supernatants colected from fPMSCs cultures exhibited obvious antioxidant capacities at different extents between passages of cel cultures. The total antioxidant capacity of the culture supernatant was comparable to 40-80 μmol/L vitamin C. In addition, al supernatants derived from cels with different passages displayed capacities to scavenge free radicals, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH?), hydroxyl radical (?OH), superoxide anion radical (O2-). Even more, activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, were also detected in supernatants colected from different passages of fPMSCs. Under the serum-free condition, the culture supernatants of fPMSCs have antioxidant capacities at certain extent. However, the antioxidant components and underlying mechanisms need to be further studied.

BACKGROUND: Microglia play an important role in immune surveillance in their quiescent state, but the role of the activated microglia is under discussion. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the mechanism of activated microglia in acute cerebral infarction. METHODS: Totally 96 male Kunming mice were selected and randomly divided into four groups, including transplantation, placebo, blank control and sham operation groups. Permanent occlusion of the middle cerebral artery was performed using suture method in the mice of the transplantation, placebo and blank control groups, followed by injection of microglia suspension via subclavian vein, medium containing the same volume of microglia, and nothing, respectively, at 12 hours after modeling. In the meanwhile, the same amount of microglia suspension was injected into the mice of the sham operation group. The Zea-longa scale and brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression at 12, 24 and 72 hours after modeling, the volume of cerebral infarction and the number of nerve cells positive for microtubule-associated protein-2 at 72 hours after modeling were detected. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The Zea-longa scale score was 0 point in the sham operation group, which was significantly lower than that in the other three groups at each time point after modeling (P < 0.01). The Zea-longa scores in the transplantation group were significantly lower than those in the placebo and blank control groups at 24 and 72 hours after transplantation (P < 0.01). The positive expression rate of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the transplantation group was significantly higher than that in the other three groups after transplantation (P < 0.01). The sham group showed no infarction, while the size of cerebral infarction in the transplantation group was significantly lower than that in the placebo and blank control groups (P < 0.01), and the microtubule-associated protein-2 positive rate was significantly higher than that in the placebo and blank control groups (P < 0.01). These results manifest that the activated microglia can improve the survival rate of nerve cells, promote the recovery of cerebral nerve function and reduce the size of cerebral infarction.

Objective:To investigate the occurrence and characteristics of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in medical school undergraduates, in order to provide reference to promote their mental health. Methods:Adopting stratified and cluster sampling method, 883 undergraduates from Xi ′an Medical College were selected and surveyed on March 9-16, 2020 by general condition questionnaire, PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C) and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ). Results:The total score of PCL-C was (24.34 ± 8.12) points, (7.19 ± 2.61) points for re-experiencing symptoms, (9.87 ± 3.49) points for avoidance symptoms, and (7.28 ± 2.85) points for arousal symptoms. The incidence of PTSD was 8.2% (72/883). The scores of PTSD symptoms were higher in grade four students and whose coping tendency was negative, (26.37 ± 9.26) and (26.49 ± 9.48), respectively ( F value was 3.065, P<0.05; t value was -9.357, P<0.001). Positive coping scores were negatively correlated to PTSD symptoms ( r value was -0.130, P<0.001), while negative coping scores were positively correlated to PTSD ( r value was 0.244, P<0.001). Medical students with strong professional attitude had lower PTSD scores (23.23 ± 6.92)( F value was 21.650, P<0.001) and lower negative coping scores (8.21 ± 4.65) ( F value was 6.567, P<0.001). Conclusions:The incidence of PTSD was 8.2% in medical school undergraduates, whose severity was related to grade and coping tendency. Appropriate crisis intervention should be taken among medical students to improve their positive coping style, strengthen their professional identification and promote their mental health.
