Different types of acids from fermentation environment or industrial microorganisms exist during fermentation process. Acids may inhibit growth and metabolism of industrial strains, namely acid stress. The tolerance mechanisms of acid stress include regulation of intracellular proton concentration, protection and restoration of intracellular macromolecules, changes in cell membrane composition and acid stress response at whole cell level. Screening and modification methods have been applied to improve acid-stress tolerance of industrial strains for decades. In this review, we provide insights into acid-stress tolerance of industrial microorganisms and address the modification of microbial pathways to improve acid-stress tolerance.

Chinese Critical Care Medicine 2017;29(4):381-384
During sepsis, circulating leukocytes are in a hyper inflammatory state, and with the progress of the inflammation, immune cells may become tolerated. Glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathway are up-regulated but oxidative phosphorylation is suppressed in hyper inflammatory cells, whereas during immune tolerance, glycolysis is often down-regulated. In this review, we will summarize the changes of cellular metabolic pathways in monocytes and macrophages during sepsis. We also review how the metabolism of glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids affect the function of monocytes and macrophages in sepsis. Current literature indicated that metabolism plays a significant role in regulating the functions of immune cells in sepsis, which might be a potential therapy for sepsis and deserved further research.

The metabolic response to stress plays a key role in the adaptive response during critical illness.Multiple mechanisms including the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, inflammation, and immune responses were involved.Insulin resistance is one of the main features in metabolic response to stress.Metabolic response to stress was manifested by disorders of energy consumption, such as glucose, lactic acid, lipids, and proteins. The decrease in fat-free body mass and cell mass, relative excess of adipose tissues, and increased extracellular fluid volumes were also involved.Therapeutic interventions, including hormone supplementation, enhanced protein intake, and early mobilization, are considered for prevention and therapy of metabolic response to stress. The review aims to summarize the pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical consequences, and therapeutic implications of metabolic response to stress in critical illness.

The congenital stricture (idiopathic urethral stricture) mostly lies in the anterior urethra and mainly occurs in boys. Hemangioma is the most common symptom of the idiopathic urethral stricture. Acquired strictures are due to four main causes. latrogenic urethral stricture is mainly caused by performing the transurethral resection, prostate, cystoscopy, prolonged catheterization, hypospadias repair and prostatectomy and so on. Bacteriuria is especially nosocomial with post operative infection in urethral strictures. Virus such as condylomata is another cause. Lichen sclerosis is a chronic progressive inflammatory condition of unknown cause and has the development of urethral strictures. Blunt anterior urethral injury is commonly associated with perineal straddle injury, while posterior urethral injury is accompanied pelvic fracture, penetrating injuries predominantly comes from gunshots involve both anterior and posterior urethra. Urethral injuries in children and females are rare. Here, we mainly investigated the causes of idiopathic and acquired urethral stricture.

Journal of Medical Postgraduates 2003;0(08):-
Objective:Studies suggested that some growth factors and their receptors play important roles in the treatment and prognosis of lung cancer. In this study we investigated the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR),vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),and Ki-67 simultaneously in the tissues of aged patients with non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC). Methods:The expression levels of EGFR,VEGF,and Ki-67 in 64 cases of aged patients with NSCLC were detected by immunohistochemistry staining. Results:The positive expression of EGFR,VEGF and Ki-67 in the tissue of lung cancer was 59.4%,57.8% and 92.2%,respectively.It is different significantly while compared with control group of benign tissues. The expression levels of EGFR and VEGF are correlated significantly with the pathologic type, differential degree,TNM stage and lymphatic metastasis. The expression level of Ki-67 is related to differential degree and TNM stage of lung cancer. Conclusion:The method of immunohistochemistry to detect multiple biological markers simultaneously is simple and feasible. It can supply important information for the staging and prognoses of patients with NSCLC,and more than that,it can also provide the theoretic basis for the individualized molecular targeting therapy of NSCLC.
