Objective To investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS) and female subclinical carotid atherosclerosis. Methods A total of 835 female subjects were enrolled in this study. MS was defined based on the ATP Ⅲ criteria. Age groups were <45,45 to 65,and ≥65 years. The participants were evaluated by the number of components of MS and clusters of MS components. Measurement of carotid arteries with B-mode ultrasound imaging was performed. Intima-media thickness and plague of the carotid arteries were regarded as the indicators of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis. Results The prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis, MS components and MS was significantly increased with the increased age. After age was adjusted, multiple logistic regression analysis showed that every component of MS was independently associated with carotid atherosclerosis; the increased waist circumstance and blood pressure and reduced HLD showed stronger effect. The prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis was increased with increasing number of components of MS. When compared to the 0 MS component group, the odds ratio (OR)of carotid atherosclerosis of the groups with 1, 2,3,4, or 5 components were 1.4,2. 0,3.4,5. 7 and 7. 1,respectively. The altered cluster components of MS impacted differently on carotid atherosclerosis. The clusters of components of MS with increased waist circumstance were more frequent than without ones. Conclusion Every component of MS may be an independent risk factor of carotid atherosclerosis;increased components of MS could contribute higher odd risk to carotid atherosclerosis; clusters of MS components might show different impacts on carotid atherosclerosis.

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of conventional ultrasound, compression elastography (CE) and acoustic radiation force impulse imaging (ARFI) in diff erential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast tumors. Methods: A total of 98 patients with liver lesions were included in the study. The images of conventional ultrasound, CE and the values of virtual touch tissue quantiifcation (VTQ) of breast lesions were obtained. hTe diagnostic performance of conventional ultrasound, CE and ARFI were assessed by using pathology as the gold standard, and then evaluate the diagnosis effciency of these three approaches in differential diagnosing benign and malignant breast tumors. Results: The specificity, sensitivity and accuracy in the diagnosis of malignant breast tumors for conventional ultrasound were 80.0%, 81.1% and 81.7%, respectively, whereas for CE elastic score were 85.7%, 86.7% and 86.3%, respectively. With a cutoff value of 3.71 for the SR, the sensitivity, speciifcity, accuracy in diagnosis of malignant breast tumors were 97.1%, 83.3% and 88.4%, respectively. With a cutoff value of 3.78 m/s for VTQ, the sensitivity, speciifcity, accuracy in diagnosis of malignant breast tumors were 94.3%, 91.7% and 92.6%, respectively. The difference in diagnosis efficiency among ARFI, CE and conventional ultrasound in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast tumors was signiifcant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Conventional ultrasound, CE and ARFI are all useful for the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast tumors. But the diagnosis effciency of ARFI is superior to CE and conventional ultrasound. The three approaches can help each other in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast tumors.

Objective To explore the correlation of fatigue with health-promoting lifestyle in the udnergraduate students, so as to provide scientific evidence for the intervention. Methods A cross-section trial was carried out in the undergraduate students from a medical university in Guangzhou. By a self-designed questionnaire, the incidence of fatigue in the undergraduate students was figured out after data processing and statistical analysis. Results A total of 6 100 questionnaires were released, and 5 843 were responded, with a respondent rate being 95.79%. The number of effective questionnaires arrived 5 676. The results showed that the prevalence of fatigue among undergraduate students was 49.6%. The female had a higher risk than the male ( 51.6% vs 45.8%, P<0.01). The prevalence of fatigue in grade 1-3 students was 49.4%, 48.1% and 52.1% , respectively, the difference being insignificant among the three grades (P>0.05). The students with poor level of health-promoting lifestyle had a higher risk of suffering from fatigue (OR=6.647, 95%CI: 4.913-8.993). Conclusion Fatigue is prevalent among the undergraduate students. The incidence of fatigue can be reduced by increasing the level of self-actualization, physical exercise and pressure management.

AIM The effect of bifico on experimental hepatic encephalopathy (HE) induced by thioacetamide(TAA) and the possible mechanism of its protective effect were studied. METHODS Experimental hepatic encephalopathy was induced by ig thioacetamide 250 mg*kg-1 successively for two days; bifico was administraed ig once per day for one week before HE induction. RESULTS Compared with control HE rat, Bifico improved rat neuro-reflexes score and hepatic injury grade(P<0.05); thus decreased rat serum ammonium and LPS concentrations, respectively (P<0.05,P<0.01). The preparation slightly increased the ratio of chain amino acid to aromatic amino acid as well as reduced the degree of liver necrosis. CONCLUSION At the dosage of 840 mg*kg-1 ig for one week before liver intoxication, Bifico significantly protects rats from hepatic encephalopathy induced by TAA.

Objective To investigate the effect of cortical 8-opioid receptor (DOR) on oxygen-glucose deprivation-induced (OGD-induced) neuronal injury. Methods Primary cultured cortical neurons incubated with selective DOR agonist (TAN-67) and antagonist (naltrindole) or PKC inhibitor (chelerythrine, CHE) were exposed to OGD. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release was detected after 24 h reperfusion. The expression levels of DOR were measured by Western blot. Results Compared with OGD group, TAN-67 significantly decreased OGD-indueed LDH release, and increased the expression levels of DOR, while nahrindole aggravated neuronal injury and decreased the DOR protein expression. CHE could abolish the LDH down-regulation induced by TAN-67 plus OGD (P< 0.05, compared with TAN-67 treated group). Conclusions DOR activation protects neurons against OGD injury. PKC might take part in the neuroprotection pathways of DOR.
